LOVE

Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity. ~Henry Van Dyke

Grab a loved one and dive into this.EASY CHOCOLATE FONDUE

Heat 1/2 C cream slow to low boil. Have waiting 14 oz. finely chopped chocolate in heat proof

bowl. Pour hot cream over, let stand 3 minutes and stir until smooth. Optional: stir in 2 T liqueur, chocolate, or Kaluah, or Frangelico, or Amaretto. Keep

warm over hot water to serve or in fondue pot. In the chocolate dip: angel food cake, bananas, strawberries, Pretzel sticks, pound cake, biscotti, orange sections etc.

As we enter the month of love this 2011 we learn of some exciting plans underway for our little town.

Mosier has a 7th grade and has secured a grant from EPA/DEQ for assessing properties toward a Middle School. The town is in negotiations with the Union

Pacific Railroad. Indications have been made that talks can proceed regarding the Rock

Quarry. A Bike/Pedestrian Wayside Station may get constructed

complete with U-fix-it bike repair station and a Pocket

Park Trail is in the works. But there’s more. See page 2.

DISTRICT 21 IN BRIEF

Judge Kelly rules in favor of D-21 School Board. It might have been a different turn out if Judge Kelly wasn’t retiring but it only matters that it has been decided. Judge Kelly evidently gave no explanation. I was told he said “Taxpayers on this hand, School District on this hand I’m going with school.” He said he didn’t have time left in has career to study it further even though he’d like to. He had been saying he couldn’t make a decision on what was “fair.” and claimed to not know for a fact that D9 voted down the “merger?”Judge Kelly decided to make a ruling since it was his last day in office and he didn’t want it to roll over to a new Judge. The whole question as to whether to put the tax measure to a vote came to an end when the School Board decided not to put it to a vote. Roughly $30,000 was spent to come to this decision. It can be credited to all the citizens in The Dalles and Mosier putting pressure on the board which prevented the board from voting to get it on the ballot. But this can come up again anytime. For now debt remains in old D12, FOR NOW. Until D12 pays their debt off just as other districts have theirs then this is not a dead issue.

SELECTED CALL DETAILSOn Januray 4, six Mosier Fire personnel were on scene within ten minutes to a call for difficulty breathing. By the time we arrived, the patient had stopped breathing. Resuscitation efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, despite the efforts of a surgeon and two Hood River Fire paramedics. Eight days later, four of us had another chance to use the same skills on a patient in cardiac arrest at the eastbound Memaloose rest stop. First arriving Mosier unit was on scene less than one minute after radio dispatch (we were scanning law enforcement frequencies and went on the road seconds after overhearing “CPR in progress between Mosier and Rowena”). Sadly, this patient also could not be resuscitated. Our thoughts and condolences are with the families of these individuals. Mosier responders have talked these incidents through many times and, though we've learned a lot from them, we are confident that we did everything within our training to save lives. We are humbled and honored to serve the community in this way.Two of the remaining calls in January were for chest pain, one was for possible pneumonia, for all of which our patient care consisted mainly of initial vital signs and assisting the transport agency. The last call was for a minor one-car accident on I-84 with no apparent injuries. Average response times for these incidents was about seven minutes, and staffing from Mosier was consistently three or four student EMT's and often at least one non-EMT volunteer and as many as eight total responders on one call.NOTABLE EVENTSEllen Dittebrandt has successfully completed a very challenging exam for certification to NFPA Structural Firefighter One. This is a hugely important step for Ellen and for our department.Chief Appleton and volunteers Aurora Moore, Ron Carroll, Kris McNall, and Charles Young are about one month away from completing the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic classroom course.

A Year Ago in MosierA YEAR AGO FEBRUARY 2010! FEBRUARY 2010! ! Robert Shields came to town

with big plans for getting stimulus money ! ! ! ! ($500 MILLION TO BE EXACT) to do all kinds of things in Mosier ! ! ! ! through tax credit codes [ which] allows

a pass through of tax liability to a business interest (or collective thereof) which enable tax challenged organizations to reap

commercial benefits for their green building and energy projects.

! ! ! ! Kris McNull steadfastly attended all meetings, crunched numbers ! ! ! ! and ultimately all was deemed too much too soon for Mosier.

" " " " The new buzz word of the year nationwide as well as in Robert’s pitch was " " " " “SUSTAINABLE”.

" " " " The movie “Food Inc.” stimulated a lot of conversation about how our " " " " food is mass produced sparking people all over the country to start " " " " producing their own food.

" " " " Winter time is a great time for dreaming and Dan Rasmussen’s dream was " " " " to create an environmental learning center on Charlie’s Island titled “The " " " " Mosier Institute”.

! ! ! ! The Mosier chapter of the Gorge Grown Food Network was created.

! ! ! ! Tami Berthold formed a group to co-op food ordering from Azure ! ! ! ! Standard

" " " " Ron Carroll and Chief Appleton attended workshop on “Reading Fire.”

! ! ! ! Community Forum on envisioning a Mosier Middle School was held.

One Hundred Years Ago in Mosier! ! Glimpses of History from the Mosier Bulletin! ! ! Compiled By Doris Lewis Smith

Friday, February 3, 1911! The Ladies Aid met with Mrs. Mosier Wednesday. After attending to the business of the day, they were served with a dainty luncheon, which was enjoyed as usual by all. There was a fine attendance for such a stormy day. In fact the ladies here never stop for such little things as rain or snow.

Page 8: Mosier Valley News Feb.. 2011 · 2011-02-07 · dip: angel food cake, bananas, strawberries, Pretzel sticks, pound cake, biscotti, orange sections etc. As we enter the month of love

Their motto should be “Onward and Upward”, for if there is anything to do they are always ready and willing.

A.W. Mohr, county surveyor, is down from The Dalles running out levels and setting grade stakes on the new Dalles-Mosier road. Mr. Mohr says the work on this road is progressing fine and that a 4-per cent grade will be had to the top of the hill at the Shogren place. The road between Mosier and The Dalles will be an important link between Portland and the eastern terminus and will also be one of the most beautiful stretches along the Columbia.

Mr. and Mrs. Dick Evans celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last Friday at their home east of town…The day was passed most pleasantly and on leaving, the guests wished the host and hostess many more years of happy married life.

! Died, on Sunday morning, January 29th, 1911, at The Dalles Hospital, Joseph Russell Huskey, in the 29th year of age…Almost the entire community and country side was in attendance to pay respects to the dead Brother, neighbor and friend, proving the esteem in which he was held by all, especially by those who had known him from his childhood. Mr. Huskey had spent almost his entire life in Mosier, coming here when a small boy…

Friday, February 10, 1911! Beginning yesterday, Feb. 9, the hours for opening and closing of the Mosier post office will be, for week days: from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Holidays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Money Order window closes at 6:30 p.m.

! Seven cars loaded with flour, wheat, and barley piled up in a heap just beyond the tunnel a mile east of Mosier on Tuesday forenoon, caused by a broken flange. Wrecking crews were at once called to the scene and worked like beavers to clear the track. The two east bound passenger trains due at 10:40 and 12 o’clock were delayed two and three hours.

! The teachers of the Mosier school delightfully entertained a small company of friends at their home Friday evening. The early part of the evening was spent in playing various games, including Brush, Jericho and Jerusalem, Conversation, and Ring on the String. A few hours were passed in this manner, and toward midnight tables were prepared and the guests were seated to a dainty lunch, after which progressive Whist was introduced. The guests departed at a late hour after having spent a most enjoyable evening.

Friday, February 17, 1911

! The handsome residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Mosier was brilliantly lighted last night when a number of friends assembled to assist them in celebrating the 22nd anniversary of their marriage.! The rooms were beautifully decorated in pink and white, with festoons of Oregon Grape, being a replica of the decorations at their marriage ceremony years ago. The tables held bouquets of cut flowers, carnations predominating. A bountiful wedding supper was served, the tables being laden with everything good that the imagination and appetite could wish. A feature of the dessert was ice cream, served in dainty dishes, in the center of which were pink hearts…! A most enjoyable evening was spent and at a late hour the guests departed, wishing the “bride and groom” many years yet of wedded bliss.

! Many school children have had or are going to have measles, and even a few adults are pestered with them.

Friday, February 24, 1911! It is more than probable that when the power plants at Hood River and The Dalles are connected up, Mosier will have an opportunity to light her streets and houses with electricity.

! The Hood River Orchard Land Company is a new concern lately come to Mosier to develop and exploit the large holdings of Devlin & Firebaugh, located on what is known as Seven Mile Hill. This tract consists of 2,400 acres which will be cleared and set to trees as rapidly as possible…About 30,000 apple trees, principally of the Spitzenberg and Newtown varieties, will be set out, and the land will be cut up in parcels of five acres and multiples of five to suit purchasers…In connection with this enterprise and yet as a separate proposition, the townsite of Ortley will be laid out and business and residence lots put on the market. Also a large mercantile store, called the Ortley Mercantile Co., will be

established…This enterprise will stimulate the general business of Mosier District, bringing in many investors and home seekers, and the entire district will benefit and prosper.

BOOKMARKS

Greetings from all of the volunteers at Mosier Valley Library.

Since December, we have had a lot of books donated. The ones I’m most excited about are authored by Jerry S. Eicher.. They originally belonged to Gerry Stevens who gave them to Bev Fretz who brought them to the library.

Jerry Eicher, as a young boy, spent eight years in Honduras, where his grandfather helped found an Amish Community Outreach. As an adult, Jerry has taught in Amish and Mennonite schools in Ohio and Illinois, has been involved in church renewal and has conducted in depth Bible study workshops. Jerry lives with his wife and four children in Virginia.

Rebecca’s Promise, Rebecca’s Choice and Rebecca’s Return are in one series and follows the story of a young girl surrounded by drama, heartbreak and happiness in the Amish way of life.

Wanda Brunstetter has written a 3 part series, again about the Amish way of life, in her books: A Cousin’s Promise, A Cousin’s Prayer and a Cousin’s Challenge.

We round out the Amish books with one called Plain Paradise written by Beth Wiseman.

The books are in excellent shape and will make a good winter’s evening read on these chilly nights.

For those of you who like biographies, we have Barbara Boxer, A Time to Run. The book depicts the dramatic rise of a young woman to a central place in the Senate .

Don’t forget we have DVD’s and VHS tapes for rent for $1.00 a week.

Hope to see you at the library.

FRIENDS OF MOSIER HIGH SCHOOL are finalizing plans for the 2011 version of the annual homecoming celebration.

A rip snortin’ evening is planned with the theme this year being “Happy Trails”.

A luncheon will be served at the Mosier Grange from 11:30 to 1:30. Donation only and the proceeds will go to the grange.

Mosier Charter School will be open from 1:00 to 2:30. Visitors will view the 7th grade classroom, wander the familiar halls, look at the pictures, hear about the computers that Google donated and hear about the proposed Mosier Middle School.

At 6:00 dinner will be served at the Hood River Church of the Nazarene, 2168 Belmont Street at a cost of $18.00. Casual western wear is suggested.

The class of 1961 has charge of the program for the evening and will present a video honoring “the 1’s”, MHS classes from 1921 through 1961.

Invitations will go in the mail around the first of March, but if you’re not on the list and would like to attend, just get in touch with Glenna at 541 478-3495 or [email protected].

SOMETHING REALLY LARGE IS MISSING FROM DOWNTOWN MOSIER, HAVE YOU NOTICED? THE GAS SIGN IS GONE

WHY READ THE MOSIER VALLEY NEWS?

This month we connected a network of folks around a stray pit bull and we found the owners of some Omaha Steaks that were delivered for Christmas to an incorrect address.

We can alert the community of break-ins, emergency procedures, and spread the word on all kinds of last minute events. Mosier is a very diverse community, diverse in interests mainly and there are times all of these interests come together. These times may be times of fire or theft or they may be fun times such as the Volunteer Fire Department annual Salmon BBQ which is an event for absolutely everybody in the community.

The better we stay connected the stronger we all are. We have numerous organizations, the Grange, Extension, 4-H, Legion, Knitting, Ukulele Playing, Yoga, Church, Downtown Mosier, Library, Weaving, Mosier Community School Foundation, Gorge Grown Food Network and many more. We all have individual interests but at times our interests overlap and we can combine if only for a day to make a huge difference in our community. If you belong to a particular organization why not assign someone to send in highlights of your organization’s activities to the Mosier Community News. There may be an event you’d like help with or an event that if two groups combined on could be even more successful.

Stay connected and thanks for reading.

This dog was finally captured and taken to Home Again who took him in for foster care. He is no longer wandering the woods in 20º weather, raiding trash cans for food and in danger of running into bear or cougar. We hope he finds a home. We congratulate all the folks who cared enough to write in suggestions on how to get him some help. Mosier neighbors spend hours planning, bating and waiting to get thisguy to a better place. Such acts of humanity are appreciated.

Mosier Community News Correction:Penny Kennedy was incorrectly named Penny Evans in last month’s review of Doris Smith’s book “I Am All A Lone” about Mary Evans Mosier Pioneer. Penny and her mother Gloria Kennedy have a wealth of history on Mosier and the Evans’. Gloria’s maiden name is Evans.

The post office will issue the first of its “all forever” First Class Mail commemorative stamps in recognition of the upcoming Lunar New Year celebration. The value of a forever stamp will always be equal to the current First-Class 1-ounce rate, no matter when the stamps are used.

The Lunar New Year is celebrated primarily of people of Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tibetan and Mongolian heritage. People born in this lunar new year, the year of the Rabbit, are said to be cautious, mannerly and sensitive. They are also thought of as lucky.

Did you know the postal service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses, and it relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations?

LOCAL KNITTER RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL ATTENTIONMosierite Nichole Reese has designed knit hat and gloves (as well as many other designs) through inspiration she gained from Rock Creek. In describing her knit pattern Nichole recalls the patterns of rock and water she observes year ‘round but particularly in early spring when salmon swim up the creek to lay their eggs.

Nichole designs for her own company BLUEGIRL KNITS (www.bluegirlknits.com) as well as other companies and you can read about Nichol and get the pattern and all essential information for knitting your own ROCK CREEK hats at: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEw11/PATTrockcreek.php
