The Summer Discovery! At Market Park Saturday has been
moved to the Expo Center at Regional Park. That’s the covered
pavilion at the bottom of the hill often used for rodeos and live-
stock shows. The change in location is due to the forecast for
rainy weather. The hours remain 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free event
will highlight activities and programs available to local families
this summer. There will be prizes, inflatables, and entertainment.
The Etowah Masonic Lodge Car and Truck Show at the L&N
Depot Saturday has been canceled due to inclement weather. It
has been rescheduled for September 14th.
The Etowah Carnegie Library will have a Paper Plate Dragons
Activity next Monday at 4 p.m.
Bill and Gloria Gaither will present the 29th Annual Gaither
Family Fest Music Spectacular in Gatlinburg Memorial Day
weekend. The concert starts Friday night, May 24th, and goes
through Sunday. Musicians include the Gaither Vocal Band, Gene
McDonald, The Isaacs, Lynda Randle, Jimmy Fortune, and The
Voices of Lee. The location is the Gatlinburg Convention Center.
The Athens Parks and Recreation Department announces the
opening of the Ingleside Pool on Thursday, May 23rd, at 12:15
p.m. with the annual Pools-In/Schools-Out Day with free admis-
sion for all. Pool hours of operation will be Mondays, Tuesdays,
Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 12:15 p.m. until 6:45
p.m. Wednesdays hours will be 12:15 p.m. until 5:45 p.m., and on
Sundays the pool will be open from 1 to 5:45 p.m. Pool rates are
$2 for those under 18 and senior citizens 55 and over. The fee is
$3 for adults 18 and older. Season and Family passes are avail-
able. Youngsters ages 10 to 15 who can swim, can pass a swim
test administered by the lifeguards, and have a liability release
form signed by a parent or legal guardian do not have to be ac-
companied by an adult.
The Learn to Swim program will be held beginning May 28th.
Registration is now open. The sessions will begin with small
group lessons from May 28th through June 7th. Large group ses-
sions will be held from June 10th through June 21st. Small group
sessions are $65 and large group sessions are $5.00. All classes
will be held Mondays through Fridays at the Ingleside Pool under
the direction of Katie Pedde. For details, hours, and other infor-
mation, or to register, call 744-2704. During the Learn-To-Swim
program, the Ingleside Pool will be open to the public from 2:45
p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The
Saturday hours will not be affected.

territory. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 139 points or 0.5% to 25,828. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 9
points or 0.3% to 2,871, and the NASDAQ Composite Index was
down 33 points or 0.4% to 7,911.

- Revival services continue through Sunday at the Athens Church
of the Nazarene on W. Madison Avenue. Services will be nightly
at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
- Lane’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church on County Rd 264 in Niota
will have a Pre-Mother’s Day Dinner and Concert Saturday from
4 to 5:30 p.m. with the concert to begin at 6.The concert features
the New Travelers from Knoxville. Tickets are $10.
- Hickory Flat Missionary Baptist Church in Meigs County will
have Homecoming this Sunday at 11 a.m. Rev. Steve Simpson of
Knoxville will preach. Dinner will follow the service. The church
is located at 2062 Fezzell Road, Decatur.
- Buttram Chapel on County Rd 220 will have their annual Home-
coming this Sunday. The service is at 11 a.m. with lunch to fol-
low.
- Lakeside Baptist Church at 2418 State Highway 304 in Ten
Mile has a food ministry each Monday and Thursday from 9 a.m.
until 2 p.m. in the church gym. They give away milk products,
fruit, bread, canned goods, cereals, etc, as long as the supplies
last. They are also looking for two free or cheap working refrig-
erators to store the perishable items. Call John Clark at 218-4986

- Union McMinn Baptist Church will have Vacation Bible School
June 2nd-7th from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Supper is served each night. The

Harold N. “Prof” Powers, age 93, of Athens, died Wednesday at his home. He was born in Meigs County and moved to Athens, where he was an educator, school board member, mayor, city councilman, scoutmaster, Learn-To-Swim director, and church leader. He served in the Navy during World War II. He taught school at Englewood High School, then became the first principal at City Park School and held that position for 33 years. During that time, he founded Camp Oo-Tah-Nee-Noh-Chee on Watts Bar Lake. He served as its volunteer director until his death. The street in front of City Park School was named “Powers Path” in honor of him and his wife, Ozelle. As a youth, he was Athens’ first Eagle Scout in 1942. He later served for 32 years as scoutmaster of Troop 116. Under his leadership, the troop produced 183 Eagle Scouts. In 1957, he established the city-wide “Learn-To-Swim” program which continues to be held each June. Thousands of children and adults have learned to swim. He served on the Athens City Council from 1984 to 1996, including two terms as mayor. He later served on the Athens City School Board. Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Athens, with visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Carol Waters Rogers, age 82, of Athens, died Wednesday at Life Care Center of Athens. She was a Dental Assistant for Dr. Horace Thomas for many years. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith Funeral Home with visitation from 11:30 to 1 p.m. prior to the service. Nella Faye Williams, age 78, of Etowah, died Wednesday at Starr Regional of Etowah. She retired from Scotties Restaurant after 30+ years. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 12 noon. Serenity Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Ralph Buckner, age 87, of Delano, died Wednesday in a Chatta-nooga hospital. A funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Bord-wine Funeral Home with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m.
