PASTORAL STATIONS.
The following arc the pastoral sta-
tions and holdings in the Banana shire.
Much of the information waa supplied
by the Shire Clerk, and. we .are indebted
to McsBra, J. Archer of Gracemere, andC. llousc at Charrel for jnuch of theearlier history of the scv/eral holdings:
BANANA : In 1878 the. Banana Sta-tion was divided into two. parts. Onewas included in the unsettled list and
was held by Mr. G. F. Want, The other,in the settled district was held byMessrs. Nott and Blair. In 1882 Bananawas held by Mr. F. W. Wright whose
family owned Bickham at B'anford near
Murrundi in New South Wales. Mr.M'right sold Banana to Messrs. Homer
an¿ Co., thc then owners of Moura. Mr.A. Wright of Nulalbin in the Duaringadistrict was a brother of the owner ofBanana. The latter sold out on account
of his failing health and went to Eng-land where he died. Previous to pur-chasing Banana, Mr. Wright owned Bio

CALLIDE : Mr. John Mundie ownedthc Callide station in 1878. In 1882,
thc properly was in the hands of Mr.Will Bell, known throughout thc dis-
trict us" Cullide
" Bell. He was a mem-
ber of the Bell' family, a branch of
which owned Dumpree. On his deathMr. John Bell of Dumgree took over
Callide.
CALLIUNGAL": This is now incor
iporatcd with Rannes, and is held byMessrs. Wilsun and M'Dowall. Of 'ts
carly history Mr. Archer writes .
Prairie adjoined Calliungal on the[south. 7'he Managing Partner on Cal-liungal was E. G. Wood, and bis partner!
was,I think, named Robinson. In com-
mon with all thc other country men-
tioned, Calliungal was originally stocked
with sheep. Thc sheep after a time
did not do well, and it was thoughtthey might thrive better if turned loosein pnddocks. Heavy expense was in-1
curred in erecting sheep proof fencing,
but the experiment was a failure nndthe firm never recovered from the heavy)
liabilities incurred. Mr. Wood, after 41)
years, left the place, ruined. Mr. Wood,
I think, was a Hunter Uiver nativa.
He had travelled overfond from Sydneyin thc early days and used lo say that
the Calliungal and Prairie country was
the finest area of country for close set-
tlement between herc and Sydney. The
original Calliungal Leases included Mt.
Morgan, anj were bounded on thc north
by the original Gracemere Leases, which
then iheluded thc country of which
Westwood is now thc centre.

wards acquired Cochin Cochin in thc

Rowbottom, and sonic time later Mr.

KIANGA.-One portion of Kiangathe unsettled area in 1878 was held hy
tho A.J.S. Bank. The portion in the
settled area was held by Mr. A. C.
Barton. In 1882 Kianga waa owned
by Mrs. M'Nab, whos* family were
among the oldest settlers in the district.
Mr. M'Nab was filled, by blacks and
after his death Mrs. M'Nab curried on
herself. She appears lo have been aI
most intrepid woman and it is rclotcd
of her that when the blacks wcro dan-
gerous and shepherds unobtainable elie
would look after the sheep herself arm-
ed with a revolver. Mr. W. Scott was
overseer for Mrs. M'Nab. Some years
later he purchased Glenmoral where his
family still reside. He was superseded
at Kianga by Mr. John Southcrland, who
afterwards became part-owner and even-
tually owner of the station when Mrs.
M'Nab died. On Mr. Soutlwrland's
death thc Kianga holding UH« divided,
the Kianga portion being sold to Mr.
Norman Farmer, the present owner. Thc
Uncle Toni portion was retained by the
Southerland family where they still re-
side. Kianga has a freehold of 3005

John Bell of Dumgree had owned it as -
a sheep run and also the adjoining
country on the west «ide of thc Leich-
hardt Ranges, known as Barfield sta«
tion. The Kooingal country was first
taken up by my late uncle, Colin ?
Archer, in, I think, 1834. Ile formed,
one of the party which travelled from
Cunambula on the Burnett and took up;
Gracemere. On that journey he in-
spected the country now known aa
