“Jobs” by John Horner, President
Greetings Fellow Chamber Members.
Morgan Hill, we have a problem. Our population of people who have a full time job working somewhere has been growing at a much more rapid rate than have our Morgan Hill based full time jobs. Worse yet is the data that says our proportion of jobs to workers within the city limits is the lowest of any of the populous cities in Santa Clara County (small communities such as Los Al-tos Hills being in their own little world).
Neighboring Gilroy, which is further south than we are, is even doing slightly better than Morgan Hill in this regard. We went over the data which led to these conclu-sions at the August 2015 Chamber of Commerce Economic Development and Government Rela-tions meeting and started the discussion about what can be done about this trend? The good news is that Morgan Hill has a terrific history of addressing problems once they have been identified and the
community has rallied behind finding solutions. For example, lagging sales tax revenue was identi-fied as a strategic problem and a comprehensive program to recruit transportation related busi-nesses (car dealers, RV dealers and truck dealers) was put into place. Today the highly successful Ford and Honda dealerships along with a major Kenworth facility and multiple RV sales and repair operations have become economic drivers for our local economy thanks to these focused policy and practice effort. We know that we can fix problems when they have been identified and priori-tized, and now is the time to do so regarding job growth.
One job growth limiting issue which came out at our meeting was that local employers recently have struggled to find workers for the available jobs. Perhaps we need to put the "if you worked here, you would be off the road by now" billboards back up. Alternatively, perhaps a Saturday job fair to make sure local people know about the opportunities in their home town would be a good idea. Another idea is to build up a Morgan Hill specific online jobs board. Besides filling the avail-able jobs, there is much to do in the areas of business attraction and the nurturing the further growth of existing companies.
As local organizations, we encourage you to engage with one another and your Chamber of Com-merce to find ways to retain, grow and attract good paying jobs to Morgan Hill. Nothing is more important for our joint long term future. Please let me know if you would like to be more deeply involved in the effort to grow Morgan Hill's job base.
Thank you for your time and consideration. ~John Horner
