It was announced at one of our ELAC meetings that due to our actual budget situation, the school was not going to be able to send parents to the annual CABE conference.
Parents talked among themselves and approached the specialist with the idea of having a mini workshop at school.
Parents and specialist met with the principal and a shared their ideas, and asked for her support.
All workshops would have to be in English and Spanish
It had to be free of cost for parents Topics had to relate to issues or concerns
parents and/or students were currently facing.
It had to be on a Saturday so everyone had a chance to attend
Provide incentives for parent participation
Workshop TopicsParents desired topics that addressed
specific needs that their kids, as well as themselves, were facing:
Graduation requirements Problems with homework Drug abuse prevention Attendance Issues Financial aid information Staying current on student progress
Many different organizations need to have community outreach and are willing to attend events like our summit to meet their job requirements and are free of cost.
