Fruiting in the Desert Sagebrush Montagnea arenarius is considered by some to be a gastroid Coprinus because of the blackish spores and thin spore-bearing plates. The plates look like dry gills and do not deliquesce. Montagnea has a volva buried deep in the sand is easily missed. It grows in the arid sandy soil of sand dunes and sagebrush desert. They are fairly common in the arid and semi-arid areas of western North America. The fruiting body forms underground and is pushed above ground by a woody stalk. There is no volva at the base of the stalk. The sand falls off the white spore case leaving a pore at the top for the rusty- brown spores to poof out. I have placed John’s books in a large covered plastic container that will be brought to forays for members to use as more source material. I also added other donated books from former members. The books will be identified by a strip of red book tape on the spine with SIMA and a number printed on the tape for quick inventory. Morel Hunt Sunday, May 16. Manns Creek Meet in the parking lot of the closed Manns Creek Store at 10 AM Sunday morning. The store is about 10 miles north of Weiser on Hwy 95. We will be going into controlled burns. This is the same weekend we hunted in Cambridge 2 years ago. Map being e-mailed again. Questions, call Genny 208-345-2515 NAMA Fall Foray – August 12 – 15, 2010 This year NAMA’s fall foray is in Colorado near Granby and Winter Park. Sponsored by the Colorado Mycological Society. This will be NAMA’s 50 th Annual Foray. It is being held at YMCA of the Rockies Mountain Snow Ranch. It is 14 miles from Winter park and seven miles from Granby. You need to have current NAMA membership to attend. Registration forms are available at: http://cmsweb.org/nama2010registration.htm Several SIMA members are planning to attend. Check the January/February issue of The Mycophile for information and rates. Currently Kathy Richmond and Hope Miller are attending and traveling together. Steiners are planning on attending. Rates go up after June 15.
