Application Examples Safety Fence Safety Fence Standards for Safety Fence SystemsEN 292 - Safety of machines and operating systems

The European standard 292-1 contains the defining information for guardingand isolation using safety fence systems.

Isolation and guarding using a safety fence system prevents the entry of person-nel into dangerous areas and restricts the trajectory of escaping parts, fluidsetc.

Guarding with a safety fence for example, must be so constructed that withoutthe use of extreme force or tools, the stability of the guarding cannot be com-promised.

EN 294 - Safety distances preventing entry into dangerous areas in connec-tion with the upper body area:

The safety distances are dependant upon the height of the overall safety fencesystem and the dimension of the openings in the wire mesh. With the standard mesh size of 40 x 40mm in the Robotunits Safety FenceSystem, you require a minimum distance of 200 mm to the danger zone. The standard fence height of 2000 mm offers adequate protection with a relati-vely small safety distance.

The diagrams on the left represent the safety distances in accordance with EN294 and EN 811. The actual layout and dimensioning requires a risk analysis as per EN 292-1 inevery case, with every new safety fence or guarding structure.

EN 811 - Safety distances preventing entry into dangerous areas in connec-tion with the lower body area:

The EN 811 allows openings larger than described in EN 294 only in the follo-wing circumstances:• all persons are minimum 14 years of age,• it can be confirmed that the following conditions will be strictly adhered towhen entering potentially dangerous guarded areas:

Openings larger than 180 mm (slot form), including larger than 240 mm (qua-dratic or circular), permit entry for the complete body in compliance with EN811. Additionally there are rules and standards for ground clearance, howeverthe minimum distance from the standing position will be clearly defined. With 200 mm ground clearance a foot safety distance of 665 mm must beadhered to (see diagram left).

Note on maximum torsion:The criteria for selection of a profile which will be subject to torsional loading is in practice not so often governed by themaximum calculated torsional load capacity of the profile, but rather the physical distortion present in the profile when subjected to a torsional load.
