‘Alive with opportunity’

A Message from Lynne Libraries and Cultural Services Manager

Welcome to the spring edition of More than

Books. The colour yellow represents spring for

me as I see the gorgeous daffodils flaunting

themselves at the entrances to our towns and the

bright gold of the polyanthus in my garden. It is such a cheerful colour

after a wet and dreary winter it lifts all our hearts. Gardens come into

focus again as the weather warms and we come out of hibernation. So

check out our shelves online or in the libraries for your favourite

gardening author or book we have at least 892 titles on this subject.

What’s happening over the next three months I hear you ask? In October we are celebrating the 25th Anniversary of our prestigious Ronald Hugh

Morrieson Literary Awards with a Gala Cocktail evening at the Hawera

Library. In November the librarians start gearing up for the 6 week

Summer Reading Programme, libraries get decorated, schools are

visited and incentives and book prizes start arriving. The theme this year is The Great Book Mystery so look out for more information on the

following pages as December sees the Programme begin.

So spring into life, summer is just around the corner.

Bye for now

Lynne

My 5+ favourite books: Rt Hon John Key, Prime Minister of New Zealand shares his favourite reads:

It’s great to be able to contribute to the LibraryPlus newsletter, More than Books.

I recently enjoyed reading the autobiography of my friend and political ally John Howard, Australia’s

former Prime Minister. John’s book Lazarus Rising: A Personal and Political Autobiography is an insight

into his successful career as Australia’s second-longest serving Prime Minister. I have a great deal of

respect and admiration for John so I thoroughly enjoyed reading his book.

I do a lot of reading in my job, but if I get a chance to read for pleasure, I tend to choose something like

a John Grisham novel. I like to read books if I get the chance on holiday, but in my job these

opportunities are rare! Happy reading.

Best wishes,

John Key

Get to know your librarian: Kaye Lally – Customer Services Librarian, Hawera LibraryPlus How long have you been a librarian? More than 20 years – I’ve lost count. I retired from Auckland

City Libraries to South Taranaki but then got tempted to work at Opunake LibraryPlus which I loved.

Now I’m at Hawera – closer to home in Normanby. I love it here, too, in my local community. Do you read much? Reading is what my eyes do best – so I read everything from the back of the

cereal packet to 40 page reports for work. I read if we’re waiting for the car to fill with petrol, while I

eat my lunch, before I go to sleep - whenever I’m sitting still with no one to talk to. What gets you out of bed in the morning? Jimmy the cat tries first. The alarm succeeds! Then it’s the

pleasure of walking out to get the newspaper with whatever view of the mountain and paddocks the

day offers followed by porridge and, catching up with friends and family across the world via

Facebook. If you could change one thing, what would it be? More time! More hours in the day, more days in the

week, more weeks in the year just to fit in all the wonderful things there are to enjoy and so I can spend

as much time with people as I do at work. Is there anything happening in the library world that excites you? Lots of things! The increasing

treasure trove of images and texts available electronically through the collaboration and cooperation

between libraries and other memory repositories (museums and archives). Reading overseas and

national newspapers on http://library.pressdisplay.com with the power of my library card.

Increasingly seeing libraries as welcoming places with something for everyone who comes in but with

the added ability to serve people remotely through all the developing electronic channels. It’s not the

death of books, it’s the connecting of people everywhere to treasures that used to be available only to

those who knew where they were kept and could visit them. And finally, what book are you recommending at the moment? I never say: you MUST read this! I

don’t assume that my taste is going to be yours. I prefer to find out what a customer has enjoyed and

find something similar.Of course, I do have favourite authors and mostly read mysteries though to truly

relax I return to my childhood favourite, Georgette Heyer. I’d never recommend her to anyone but I

know she has other fans out there!

In focus: Kaponga LibraryPlus

The Kaponga Library started in the vacated county council office next door to the Kaponga Town Hall.

The Town Clerk Tom Thompson was located there and the county council business was carried out

there prior to the amalgamation of the County and Borough Councils.

Although a lovely building, it was quite small. Patsy Lawson from Eltham was the Librarian at that time.

She has many happy memories of ‘the good old days.’ There were no computers then, everything was

done manually on the old card system.

The Westpac Bank was being vacated and the building was offered to the Council to use.

Patsy remembers the move to the ‘bigger space’. It took two days of moving books in a borrowed

supermarket trolley. Just as well they were beautiful days! It took a further couple of days with help

from Hawera Library staff to put up the shelving and then shelve the books.

Because there was more space we were able to start doing holiday programmes. Children from all

over the District would come and join in. Many families over the years have grown up using our library;

we’re now on to the second generation.

Books were shared from Eltham Library, customers would ring up and ask for certain books, Patsy

would then ring Eltham to see if she could borrow copies, she would then pick them up the next day on

her way out to Kaponga. Borrowing from other libraries also included making trips to the National

Library in Palmerston North. Travelling book reps would also visit to show the librarians the latest

books for them to buy.

The hours were sometimes erratic but were managed to benefit the community. Classes from the 2

local schools would visit; they were always planned so Patsy would have a collection from around the

District for the children to see. The outside space is fenced off so was used a lot in summer, parents

would be happy the children were outside and safe.

In 2002 Kaponga Library became a LibraryPlus. Today it offers a wide range of services including free

internet and wifi, school holiday programmes, class visits, visitor information, Council services such as

rates payments and dog registrations as well as a full range of library services. We are now open 20

hours a week - you can come visit our lovely library between 1pm and 5pm Monday to Friday.

Summer reading programme

Solve the mystery of what to read this summer by joining The Great Book Mystery at your local

LibraryPlus.

Hundreds of South Taranaki children will be

spying out great reads and joining in some fun

activities during the summer reading

programme.

The programme is for children 5 - 12 years old and is available free of charge.

Children read, report in to staff three times over the summer and earn rewards for their

reading.

Research shows that if children forget to read over summer their reading level suffers. To prevent that happening! Join The Great Book Mystery.

Enrolments begin early December.
