Riddle 5

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;

Close to the sun in lonely lands,

Ring’d with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;

He watches from his mountain walls,

And like a thunderbolt he falls.

Riddle 6

This thing all things devours;

Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;

Gnaws iron, bites steel;

Grinds hard stones to meal;

Slays king, ruins town,

And beats high mountain down.

Riddle 7

Upon four legs it walks at dawn,

But two of them, by noon, are gone,

And when the sun is in the west,

It finds that then three legs are best.

Riddle 8

I kiss the earth and touch the sky,

Yet neither lips nor hands have I.

I harm no creature, great or small,

Unless, of course, I chance to fall.

I am so strong I’ll never tire,

But fear I termite, axe, and fire.

The case of the Missing BodiesWhen the policeman opened the door of the house, he knew exactly

what had happened. The bodies were gone, but there was still lots of evidence. On the couch the killer sat looking at the policeman. The killer did not seem afraid.

The policeman frowned. He knew the killer was guilty, but he did not draw his gun. Instead, he walked to the couch and sat down next to the killer. Then he picked the killer up, place him on his lap, and scratched his ears. The policeman looked at the broken aquarium and the big wet place on the floor. He shook his head.

“Felix,” he said to his cat, “What am I ever going to do with you?”Did this story have you fooled? Which sentence helped you figure out

what really happened? Oh, yes, and just what were those missing bodies?

A Nutty Question

A squirrel is on the trunk of a tree. You are standing on the other side of the tree. You cannot see the squirrel. You are not even sure a squirrel is there.

Slowly, you walk around the tree. The squirrel does not want you to see it. It moves around the trunk so that the trunk is always in between. In a minute you come back to where you started. You still have not seen the squirrel

Have you walked around the squirrel?

Frog on a Log

A frog is sitting on the end of a log. It jumps exactly half way across. It then jumps again, this time traveling half the remaining distance. It keeps jumping in this way, each time going just half the distance to the other end of the log.

Will the frog ever get to the other end of the log?
