~~TODAYS PROGRAM ~~ Colin Barnard introduced our speaker, Sister Ann Weltthe founder and Director of the Bay Area Crisis Nursery(BACN) about 33 years ago. She is a Sister of the Orderof St. Josephs of Carondelet, whose mission is to serve thepeople of the community.

About 33 years ago, Sister Ann had been teaching scienceat a school in Orinda, but decided that the area needed aplace where parents under stress could leave their minor

children for a day or more while they solved whateverproblem was affecting them. She had no money, staff, norspace, but she solicited the parents of the current andformer students and raised some funds for a startup. Shenever has taken money from government entities, as theregulations can be oppressive and the continued fundinguncertain. To this day, BACN relies on donations from thecommunity.

Concord Rotary has become a regular supporter afterseveral inspection tours, and has overcome their initialreluctance to donate operating funds, preferring to donatecapital items.

They were helped by a carpenter who hadimmigrated to the US seven years previously hewanted to spruce up the nursery. After a tour, herealized that a completely new building was reallyrequired, and he arranged to raze the existingbuilding and install a pre-fab building in just 21 days, all for $210,000. Such a deal!

BACN now has two buildings; the Nursery is forchildren less than 6 years old, and the DahlstromHouse is for older children up to age 11. Both are inConcord. Children receive good food, clothing, andloving care, and the maximum stay allowed is 30days. Services are free, confidential, and voluntary.
