Definitions
• Moon– A natural satellite
• Satellite– Anything that orbits a larger object
• Crater– Bowl shaped depression
Planets with moons
• Earth
• Mars
• Jupiter
• Saturn
Planets that have satellites
• Uranus
• Neptune
• Pluto
Earth’s Moon• Close enough to easily be seen
• Interior of the moon is much like the Earth’s core but much cooler
• The moons origin–Hypothesized it used to be a part of
Earth
Earth and it’s moon
Venus and Earth’s Moon
Mars Moons
• 2 Moons–Phobos and Deimos
• Orbit very quickly around the planet
• Irregular shape –not spherical like Earth’s
moon
Jupiter moons
• Has at least 17 possibly up to 40
• Io is the closest to Jupiter and similar in size to Earth’s moon– Io has active volcanoes on it
• Many of Jupiter’s rings are associated with it’s rings
Saturn Moons• Has at least 18 moons
• Titan– Largest moon – Has an atmosphere composed mostly of
nitrogen
Satellites• Uranus
– Has about 20
• Neptune– Has 8 icy satellites/moons
• Pluto– 1 – Charon – half the size of Pluto
Activity• Section 30.3
– Fold your paper in half like a hot dog– Then fold it in half the other way– Repeat the second fold
• You should end up with 8 boxes
• On this sheet of paper you will recreate the phases of the moon. On one side you will draw that phase, on the back describe that phase.
