MOON AREA HIGH SCHOOL CHEERLEADING TRYOUT PACKET
Please print two copies of the tryout packet - keep one on file
Our Cheer Philosophy: The Moon Area High School Cheerleaders will serve to lead, direct and
support the spirit of our athletic teams, student body and officials at all events and games.
Cheerleaders will promote excellence in education, spirit, sportsmanship, physical fitness,
positive image, and leadership whether on or off the field. Cheerleaders will strive to maintain
high standards of morality and social conduct.
Moon Area High School Cheerleading Objective: Participation in the Moon Area High School
Cheerleading Program is a privilege and an opportunity. Along with this privilege come certain
responsibilities. In addition to representing yourself, you are also representing your squad, the
sport and team, your coach, your school, and even your community. Therefore, cheerleaders
must conduct themselves appropriately at all times, not just at games or school activities.
Success of the cheer squad is dependent not only on the team, but also each cheerleader’s
effort, and willingness to work as a team. This includes behavior displayed on social media as
well. Be aware that if it is discovered that a cheerleader has an inappropriate social media post,
the coaching staff will be permitted to review such posts and make decisions regarding the
cheerleader’s position on the squad.
Moon Area High School Cheerleading Tryout Procedures: The Cheerleading Coach and his/her
staff will conduct cheer tryouts once during the academic year for both the football and
basketball seasons; this will be in the spring for the next school year. A cheerleader who quits
mid-season will forfeit their opportunity to try out for the next school year. All squad members
must tryout every year. Past experience in cheer is no guarantee that a candidate will be
selected for the upcoming year. The selection process will use independent judges and the
head coach for scoring. The candidates with the highest scores will be selected for the
upcoming year.
Tryouts:
All Candidates will be randomly selected into groups of 4 for the final day of tryouts.
Each candidate will receive a number to wear on tryout day. It will be required that all
groups match their outfits for final day of tryouts. (Example: white t-shirts, black shorts,
white socks, white bows)
The required material will be taught on Tuesday, 3/19 and Wednesday, 3/20.
Thursday, March 21 will be a practice day with your groups.
The candidates will learn 2 required jumps and 1 of their choice, a cheer and a portion
of a dance.
Tryouts are closed to the public.

Cell phones are not allowed out during clinics or final tryouts. Please turn them on
silent and put away at all times. Points may be taken away for the use of cell phones
during tryouts.

Jewelry is not allowed during tryouts. Small stud earrings will be allowed.
Candidates not performing must remain quiet in the waiting area and/or the “on deck”

room 160 at the high school.

Moon Area High School Cheerleading Guidelines/Rules
2019 – 2020 Season
The following information refers to the rules and regulations when becoming a MAHS
Cheerleader for:
Varsity Football
Varsity Basketball
Junior Varsity Basketball
It will be the coach’s decision as to the total number of cheerleaders on a specific squad.
Varsity Tiger Mascot: The Mascot will participate at all home Varsity football & basketball
games, homecoming parade, pep assemblies and other school related and sporting events
determined at the beginning of the season. If there is more than one person interested in this
position, a tryout will be held to determine the best student for the position. This will be held
separately from the cheerleading tryouts. This position can be male or female. All cheerleading
rules, guidelines and contracts will also apply to the Mascot. The Mascot can be different for
each football and/or basketball season.
The Varsity Football Cheerleading Squad: The squad will consist of Freshman-Senior students.
Cheerleaders participate at all Football games, Homecoming Parade, scheduled pep assemblies
and all fall events. They will also attend any playoff, sectional or state championship games.
Cheerleaders also assist in the QBC Golf Outing, the “Cash Bash” and any other Fundraisers the
QBC provide if available.
Captains: Captains will be assigned at the beginning of the season. There will be 2-3 Captains
to ensure there is always at least 2 Captains available at every game/event. The Captains will
be selected by the squad, but the final decision will be made by the coach. Being a Captain is a
big responsibility. The leadership position is a very important. At all times, these students must
realize the responsibility and authority of this position, but not abuse the power. It is not an all-
powerful office that can override the coach(es) or the best interest of the squad. Captains are
not to give permission to other cheerleaders to leave/class/performance/events without a
coach’s knowledge at any time. They are to serve as leaders and guiding influences, and as such
they must be above reproach at all times and represent the coach(es), administration, and
school district to the very best of their abilities. If a Captain does not maintain their
responsibilities throughout the season, they will be removed by the coach and another Captain
will be selected immediately.
12
Lettering: In order to letter for cheerleading, the student athlete must fulfill 90% of both
football and basketball seasons as stated in the Moon Letterman Eligibility Guidelines and be a
Varsity Cheerleader. All Varsity cheerleaders will receive their awards after the completion of
the basketball season.
Academic Eligibility: All student athletes must maintain a passing grade in all classes
throughout the season. If a student athlete is failing any class, they will have one week to get
that grade up to a passing grade. The student and the parent will be notified. If they do not get
their grade up, they will be benched for the upcoming game/event. Being benched means they
are required to come to the game/event in complete uniform and sit on the bench with the
coach for the entire time. Eligibility is also based on the P.I.A.A. and Moon Area School District
Rules and Regulations.
Physicals: All student athletes are required to have a physical evaluation in order to participate.
The Moon Area School District offers physical exams at the high school. The date for the
upcoming season has not been set yet with the Athletic office.
Online Registration: All student athletes must register online at www.pa.8to18.com/moonarea
if you are selected for a squad. It is not required for tryouts.
Contacting Coaches: Please be considerate of the coach’s time when contacting them. Do not
interrupt or discuss any personal, behavioral or situational concerns during a game and/or
event. The coach can be contacted by phone or email only. Text messaging is not a way to
have a conversation, therefore, please refrain from any lengthy text messages. A text message
to set up a convenient time with the coach is fine.
Chain of Command: If you have an issue, of any kind, you must first contact the coach to
resolve the matter. If the matter cannot be resolved, you may then contact the Athletic
Director, then the Principal.
Cheerleading Practice: The new football and basketball cheer squads will begin cheer practice
in May – August in order to prepare for the upcoming season(s). Practice will be 3 days per
week in the evening for a 2-hour period. Once school starts practice will be 2 days per week for
football cheerleaders only. Summer practice times may be during the day for conditioning.
Football games are held on Friday nights. Once basketball season begins, practice will be for
the basketball cheerleaders only and will be 1 day per week. Games are on Tuesday and Friday
nights. *It is up to the coach’s discretion to add practices depending on a specific upcoming
event.
Cheerleading Camp: Cheer camp is an away 4-day, 3-night camp at a local college during the
summer. All cheerleaders are requested and strongly recommended to attend camp.
Cheerleading camp is not only a significant learning experience for the girls, it is a great team
bonding experience. The material learned at camp will be used throughout both football and
basketball seasons.
13
Transportation: Cheerleaders will be transported by school bus to all games and/or events.
Cheerleaders are not allowed to drive to and/or from athletic events that they will be cheering
and/or performing at. No other means of transportation is permitted unless a signed note is
provided by a parent or guardian prior to the event/game.
Fundraising: Cheerleaders will work with together to help raise money to offset some of the
cost of items needed throughout the season. Funds raised will go towards items for the end of
season banquet, end of season gifts, team bonding activities, pink out bows, homecoming
decorations and much more. Parent volunteers will be needed to assist and organize these
fundraising activities.
Volunteers: Parent volunteers will be needed throughout the year for different events such as
homecoming, senior recognition, end of year banquet, pink out, and working the concession
during our home football games. More information regarding fundraising will be forthcoming.

football player and underclassmen will be responsible for making a sign for a Senior

allowed in uniform.
Season Expenses: Cheerleading, like any other sport, includes many expenses. Cheerleading is a
very expensive sport that requires money up front. Some of the expenses are a one-time fee
and some are required yearly. This list may change in cost or items, but this is an example.
There will be fundraisers throughout the year to off-set some of these costs. If you have a
