Bratislava is the capital city of Slovakia. Thanks to the strategic posi-tion of the city, the river Danube that passes through it, the surround-ing nature of the Small Carpathian mountain range, and the history of the city, Bratislava is an ideal city to visit.

Although the first written mention of the town dates back to the year 907 AD, Bratislava is a town of the young with a modern spirit and with a variety of attractions on offer. Everything in the historical cen-tre - the gorgeous Baroque palaces, interesting museums and galler-ies are all within walking distance, so when you return back home, or to your hotel you will not be worn out but freel fresh and relaxed. Be-fore you take a stroll through the town, visit St. Michael’s tower, which is one of the 4 former gates of the town. The tower offers a splendid view of the whole town. Bratislava is dominated by the newly recon-structed Bratislava castle which should definitely be on photographs of any tourist to the town. There is nothing more pleasant than tak-ing a walk down from the castle through narrow streets and visit St. Martin’s Cathedral - the coronation place of Hungarian monarchs. On the way, you will run into many original cafes, creatively designed res-taurants with a tasty cuisne. Make sure to stop at the Main square, which is the meeting point of locals and is lively all year round. In summer, concerts and other events of the biggest summer festival – the Cultural Summer and the Castle festivities take place at the square. In winter, the square turns into a place where friends meet at the Christmas markets. On the last day of the year, Bratislava turns into Party-slava, as people who celebrate New Year’s Eve like to call it Bratislava is simply a town that will inspire you and will always have something up its sleeve to offer to its visitors.

The Bratislava castle, a national cultural monument, is both a symbol and a dominant feature of the city. The first traces of a settlement here originate from the end of the late stone age and relics from the times of the Roman Empire to the Great Moravian Empire can be found here as well. The castle has undergone gothic and renaissance reconstructions. Following the battle at Mohač in 1526, when the Turks defeated Hungarian armies, the castle became the seat of the Habsburg Emperor Ferdinand I (and the castle was reconstructed). The most significant alterations were made during the reign of Marie Theresa (1740 – 1780). On May 28th 1811 a great fire broke out in the castle and left the castle in ruins for the following 150 years. A reconstruction of the castle had to wait until after World War II. Today parts of the premises of the castle serve for representative purposes of the Slovak National Council. The castle complex also houses exhibitions of the Slovak National Museum (see page 26). In the former castle chapel is now a concert hall. Legend has it, that when Empress Marie Theresa learned of the conspiracies of the nobles who did not want to be governed by a woman, she invited them to the castle and organised a banquet, at which witches turned them into stone. The stones were thrown into the castle well and thus hid foreve the secret passages which led out from here.

BRATISLAVA CASTLE

ST. MARTIN’S CATHEDRAL

The Primatial palace (1778-1781) was built on the site of the original courtyard which belonged to the Esztergom archbishop. The frontal facade of the palace is designed in a strictly Classicist style. The first owner of the palace was cardinal Jozef Batthyanyi. At the top of the palace is an imposing black iron cardinal hat. The gable of the building is decorated with a number of allegorical statues, representing the cardinal’s human qualities and achieved ranks. The Bratislava treaty between France and Austria was signed here in the Hall of Mirrors on December 26th 1805. Today, the palace is the seat of the town’s Mayor. The beautiful Hall of Mirrors houses concerts and weddings. A rare collection of English tapestries from the 17th century, which originate from the royal loom in the English town of Mortlake and were discovered during the reconstruction in 1903, is definitely worth a visit. (see page 28). In the square inner courtyard of the Primatial palace stands the exquisite fountain of St. George, depicting the legendary knight battling a dragon. According to a legend, the figure of St. George is identical to the one of archbishop Juraj (George), and his battle with the dragon symbolizes the endeavor of the Catholic church to save the city from reformation. Legend has it that knight St. George saved virgin Dubravka from the dragon and as a reward received her hand in marriage. Every year, on the occasion of St. George’s Day, the stone statue comes to life, turns around on his horse and bows to the inhabitants of the city.

The church has a grand cusped portal with a well preserved tympanum. The church interior is filled with a remarkable relief of the Holy Trinity. The church has four chapels, the canons’ chapel, the gothic chapel of the Czech queen Sophia , the chapel of St. Anne and the baroque chapel of St. John the Merciful. The portal of the southern antechapel represents the oldest renaissance architecture on the territory of Slovakia. Between the years 1563 and

1830 this was the coronation church of Hungarian kings and their wives. To this day this is documented by a copy of the Hungarian royal crown (300 kg) placed on a gilded cushion measuring 2 x 2 meters at the top of the 85-meters tall neo-gothic tower. The pomp and glory of the coronations return to Bratislava every year at the beginning of September.

The oldest Gothic sacral monument in Bratislava (13th century), hidden behind a baroque facade of the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. In the 16th century this was the site where Hungarian noblemen were made knights of golden spurs (as a part of a coronation). The chapel of St. John the Evangelist from the 14th century ranks amongst the rarest Gothic monuments in Slovakia. The Franciscan monastery has an original Gothic crossed arcade corridor. In 1526 the Hungarian parliament elected Ferdinand I as the first Habsburg king on the Hungarian throne. After an earthquake in 1897 the statics of the original Gothic tower were disturbed. The tower was therefore, dismantled and relocated to the Petržalka park where it stands to this day. The inhabitants of the city insisted that the earthquake was a manifestation of divine wath for the allegedly godless life of the Franciscan monks.

The elegant copper bulbous roof is one of the symbols of the town. The roof of the Gothic tower from the mid 14th century was from 1753 to 1758 adapted into the Baroque style. The tower has seven floors. At the top of the 51 meters tall tower is a statue of the archangel Michael slaying a dragon. A replica of a cannon serves as an invitation to the Museum of weapons (see page 26) The upper terrace of the tower provides an excellent view of the Old Town. with its unique wall paintings from the 15th century is a monument that was reconstructed in the Neo-gothic style. In 1581 a renaissance arcade was annexed to the complex. The Bratislava City Museum, which is the oldest museum in Bratislava (1868) is located here. You can also find here an exposition of feudal justice, as well as visit the remarkable interiors of the Old Town Hall building and see the original furnishings of the municipal judiciary (see page 26 ). The beautiful Renaissance courtyard holds cultural programs in the summer and concerts can be heard from the tower. The Maximilian fountain was built in 1572 in the Austrian stone workshop of Andreas Lutringer, with the financial support of the Hungarian King Maximilian II. However, the fountain is better known as Roland’s fountain. To this day, inhabitants of the town still perceive a veil of mystery around the fountain. The knight Roland stands in his place, facing the Town Hall. However, once a year, precisely at the stroke of midnight at New Year’s Eve, he turns around and bows in the direction of the former Town Hall, thus honouring the twelve councilors who in the past sacrificed their lives to save the town. Roland is also rumoured to come to life on Good Friday. On this occasion, in broad daylight he steps down from his pedestal and waves his sword, Durandal, in the direction of the four cardinal points, so that the town feels it is still under his protection. However, Roland can be seen doing this only by a born and bred citizen of Bratislava, with a pure heart, who has never harmed anyone.

The gothic church of the Order of St. Clare was built in 1302 on the site of an older monastery. A valuable Baroque decoration later altered the interior. The dominant feature and architectural jewel is the hexagonal tower. The convent, which was later a grammar school, was home to the composer Bela Bartok and the Slovak inventor Jozef Murgaš. According to a legend, the knight Christian built the gothic tower out of love for the nun Matilda. The mother superior destroyed their love .At first she promised him the girl , but later did not keep her promise. Today, the church does not hold services but serves as a venue for concerts. Premises of the adjacent monastery are used by the University library.

The Devin castle, a national cultural monument, is located at the foot of a cliff above the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. The area has been settled in since the late Stone Age. A number of nations, such as the Celts, Romans, Goths, Lombards and many others, populated this strategically important site. The oldest traces of the Slavs are from the 8th century. An exceptionally important Great Moravian fortress, connected with the name of prince Rastislav, stood here in the 9th century. The first written mention of Devin is from the year 1223. Since the 15th century the castle belonged to renowned aristocratic families. In 1809 it was blown up by the Napoleonic armies. In the 19th century it became an important site for the awakening movement of the Slovak National Revival. A renaissance fortress with a battlement stands on the narrow cliff to this day. Legend has it that a bride jumped from there on her wedding day, when her family killed her future husband, knight Mikulaš and wanted to send her to a convent. This national cultural monument is one of the most visited historical sites in Slovakia. In mid. 13th century a stone castle stood in the eastern part of the Small Carpathians, not far from Modra, above the town of častá, which was a part of a system of castles starting from Bratislava reaching all the way to žilina. This original castle vanished when the new owners, Austro-Hungarian entrepreneurs – the Fugger family, built a new fortress in the years 1535 – 1537 on the site. Its later owners -the Palffy family, continued in building the fortress and making it into a grand castle. They summoned here a very valuable art collection. These artifacts are a part of the museum exposition documenting the development of the housing culture of noblemen and the commons in Slovakia. There are many interesting events taking place at the castle, i.e. falconry performances or the popular castle evenings with night tours.

In the town you will find a beautiful baroque church of Our lady of Sorrows, which was in 1964 raised to the status of the first basilica minor in Slovakia by Pope Paul VI. An easy ascent to the ruin of the Plavecky castle from the 13th century offers a superb view of the Zahorie plain. Close to the nearby village of Borinka in the southern part of the Small Carpathians on top of a 486 meters tall limestone formation is the Pajštun castle. The castle was built in the 13th century, as a border fortress that would defend the northwestern border of the Hungarian state. The tower and the palace reconstructed in the 15th century. The castle was occupied until the beginning of the 19th century. In 1810 it was destroyed by the Napoleonic armies and since then has been in ruins.
