fullness in this matter. These are the

people who make country BIG.

Columbia will shortly mount a promotion campaign on the single and album release

which will coincide with their Canadian tour as opening act for the Bee Gees. These

dates include: Thunder Bay Sept 22, Sault Ste. Marie (23), Sudbury (24), London (25),

Kitchener (26), Ottawa (27), Kingston (30), the Montreal Forum Oct 1, Moncton (2),

Saint John (3), and Halifax (4).

A late tribute to Cannonball Adderly

This tribute is belated but worthy of a men- tion. Julian "Cannonball" Adderly died of

a heart attack at the age of 46, 25 days after suffering a stroke on his way to a gig.

The son of a Florida musician who suckled

his son on jazz, Julian arrived in New York in 1955 with a quintet including brother

iNat on cornet. Headlined as the heir ap- parent to altoist Charlie "Bird" Parker,

Adderly forged his own musical -energies

with the Miles Davis Group from 1957 to 1959, and later on to cut dozens of records

with his own quintet.

His easy banter with audiences and laid-back blow for improvisation, made the Adderly

group one of the most respected names ih jazz. "God smiles on certain individuals",

he said "and they get the privilege to have

certain beautiful artistic vibrations pass through them."

The man of "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" demoed

brilliant at Toronto's Colonial Tavern last

year, and it was apparent that his pursuits were based on an effortless -drive ... he

drank with the patrons and seemed to be a

great individual ... nothing snotty about his regal proportion. His sax sounds -on, but

the Cannonball is dead. MD

Conference set for big weekend

The Toronto Castle Harbour Hotel will be

the meeting place for a number of music in-

dustry figures taking part in the CEC, the National Canadian Programming Conference, between October 10-13.

500 delegates are expected, representing most of the universities and colleges in the

country. It is expected that the gathering will help assist those responsible for pro-

gramming music and entertainment events

on university and college campuses. The delegates are responsible for purchasing at

least 10 million dollars worth of entertain- ment annually.

Performers, record company executives, con- cert promoters, entertainment industry law-

yers, booking agents and managers are among the industry personalities expected to attend.

Major issues to be discussed will include the role of women in the music industry, per-

forming rights, music business law, Quebec's

star system, and running campus pubs.

Following a series of concerts, will be the CEC Awards Banquet held on the final night,

featuring comedy performers, groups, singers, mentalists, etc. It is hoped that the event

will cover far more than just pop music en- tertainment.

RPM, you are aheadof your time by putting a stop to this sortof crap. Nobody but nobody has been ableto tell those heads of Blocks (or Block-heads), how, or what they are going to dosomething. Shame, shame, beautiful shame!

Since we first heard the record, we believedit was a hit and worked it as a hit. Sinceearly June, our staff has done little else ex-cept think, talk about, and work on TheHomecoming. Hundreds of phone calls havebeen made. Uncountable telexes have beensent and an enormous amount of time hasbeen spent on this record.

If you think it's a fluke, talk to Chuck Cam -roux of CFTR who added it the week itwent out and has had tremendous response.Ask Taylor Campbell at Pindoff RecordSales, or Shirley Harrison at Eatons, orGraham Coles at The Bay, who believed inthis record, pushed it strongly and conse-quently sold a lot of it (and are still sellinglots of it).

Or, ask our promotion girl, Heather Murray, who has spent day after day in stores givingthem play copies, setting up displays and ingeneral creating an aura of excitement.

Or, most importantly, ask anyone who hasbought the record. It is a beautiful piece ofmusic, a tune that instantly evokes a posi-tive response from the listener. As Bill John-ston at Muntz put it, "Anyone who is notaffected emotionally by The Homecomingdoesn't deserve to be alive."

Finally, if it is a fluke, we hope we havemany more of them. Anderson & Tull firmed for Maple Leaf Gardens

Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull, the music -

court's finest will return to Maple Leaf Gar-

dens Oct 7, 1975. The show is being touted

by Canadian PR firm Charles -Dunne and

Owens.

The current Tull line-up maintains with flautist Ian Anderson, he of the radiant trill

and breathless approach to vocals, Martin

Barre on electric guitar, John Even on key-

boards, Jeffrey Hammond -Hammond on bass and Mr. Barriermore Barlow on drums.

Many observers believe that without a doubt

Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull have establi- shed themselves for years as being the fin-

est and most innovative rock -musicians that

can be viewed in concert performance.

Ian Anderson is a brilliant and sensitive

composer whose dancing feet and madcap

antics continually throw his audience off -

balance, never assured as to what can be

musically and theatrically expected.

Everyone of their shows have been the

"sold -out" extravaganza and the band, is

truly the most creative troupe one can hope

"We're asking to be considered seriously as animportant industry which has come of age andshould be treated accordingly." - Tim HarroldA new executive power soon to be felt with-in the Canadian recording industry is Poly-dor Canada's new president, Tim Harrold.A rather frank and outspoken individualwho likens change to "new life", Harroldhas completely immersed himself in theeveryday workings of his own company andthe problems of the industry generally. He -

has already made himself known to radioand press VIPs in several major and break-out markets and has initiated changes withinthe company that indicates a heavy concen-tration on more communication with re-tailers, rackers, the trade press and radio.

Harrold was recruited to the Polydor ranksin 1970 by Roland Rennie (now with Chap-pell) who was managing director of the U.K.operation and who is regarded as a legend inthe British pop movement. It was Renniewho made the original contact with TrackRecords and the Who (known then as theHigh Numbers). He was also very close toRobert Stigwood and figured in the develop.ment of Cream, Blind Faith and the Britishproduction of "Hair".

As marketing manager of Polydor, London,Harrold became familiar with the worldworkings of Polydor which paid off forhim in January of 1974 when he was trans-

I think it is very important. I think it keepsthe whole industry moving. It's the way webreak product. It's absolutely vital to ourbusiness.

freight .

Our main worry at this time is ob- taining supplies of the hot product which

we have, because of the strike at MCA. It has effected us seriously, so far as our sing- les and albums are concerned.

How much importance do you attach to the singles market?

I think it is very important. I think it keeps

the whole industry moving. It's the way we break product. It's absolutely vital to our

business.

What percentage of Polydor's business would be singles?

One of the problems I've found is the statis-

tics supplied by Statistics Canada. They just

don't help me gauge what the market is. Wehave tried to rack our brains to find a reli-able estimate for market size and, so far, wehave not found it. We make our guesses justlike anybody else and these are partially in-fluenced by album and tape product, theperformance of our own record shops inOntario and, of course, the feedback fromour salesmen across the country.

Can you see more activity at Polydor insofaras Canadian content is concerned?

I'm interested in listening to product. I'mnot intending to go flat out into an enor-mous expansion of activity, but I do feelthat there are artists in Canada who shouldhave international appeal and I think thatour close association with Polydor and Mer-cury in the States and Polydor/Phonogram

in Europe and across the world, enables usthe opportunity of getting their records re-viewed and listened to by important peoplein the music industry, internationally. Wehave a record by Basic, Black and Pearl be-ing released in the States, the U.K., Mexico,Holland and South Africa, and this singlehas really only received major play in Cana-da. So, here is a single that hasn't necessarilyhit the top of the charts which we still canobtain release for overseas and I think this isan important role of a company like ourown which has such a wide internationalnetwork of branches.

How do you intend to find this product?

You'd be surprised how many budding A&Rpeople we employ or, at least, have contactwith. Everybody secretly believes that they

are the A&R experts and, as a result, wehave a great number of groups drawn to ourattention and a considerable number oftapes flow through our office doors.

Do you offer a finders incentive to yourpeople?

Generally speaking, if someone refers an actto us and if we go with the act, their initia-tive is noticed, shall we say.

How do you view the radio situation inCanada?

Radio does play an enormously importantpart in the development of record sales andI think we should recognize that withoutradio we should find it very much harder, inthis market above all, to make people awareof the records we've produced. We really de-pend on radio to play our records. However,we are selling a large number of records inthe Montreal market without any radio air-play at all - through disco clubs.

Is that an alternative?

It's not an alternative - it's an additionalmarket, as far as I'm concerned.

Can you sell as many records in the discomarket as you can through radio play?

No, that's not quite true, because a majorradio hit can sell right across Canada and, asfar as I know, there are many places inCanada where there are no discos, at all.

Do you go along with the common thinkingthat the record business is recession proof?

This is always theory. I think in the U.S.there's a lot of companies who have issuedinstructions that inventories were to be cutback and that had an effect in Canada withU.S. owned companies who were influencedby their parents. We noticed, as a result, that we were having to take back substantialreturns which we should not have normallyexpected to have received. However, I thinkthis was an over -reaction in my view. Themarket still feels very lively to us.

We've got a lot of hot product. Our mainproblem, again, is to get the supplies fromthe Canadian manufacturers, on whom werely. We only have our own factory - we're

"It takes years to learn to be an entertainer and tolearn to be in front of people and do it well andbe natural." - Cliff EdwardsCliff Edwards has been involved with themusic business for ten years and is knownas a recording artist, a producer and a tele-vision personality. Formerly a lead vocalistand producer with The Bells, Cliff was fea-tured on "Fly Little White Dove Fly" andthe million selling "Stay Awhile." Hissyndicated television series, "The CliffEdwards Show" led the way to an hour longmusic special on CBC TV.

Edwards recently signed with A &M Records, which was followed by his debut single forthe label "Singer Of Songs."

What prompted you to leave The Bells?

After 6 years in the band, in 1972 I felt itwas time to make a change and try and dosomething on my own. That really was theonly reason. A minor reason was that I wasthe only member in the band who had afamily and I wanted to spend more time athome. The pressure of the single people inthe band to work all the time kind of ef-fected me.

You have a new record just released?

Yes, this is the result of my signing withA&M Records. The single is entitled"Singer Of Songs". I will have an albumcoming out probably in the fall.

Any plans to tour?

Yes, we have a seven piece act rehearsingnow. This is a new band with 5 guys and 2girls. We are doing nightclubs in westernCanada. We start the tour the week of the24th in Peterborough for a week at The401 Inn. From there we drive to ThunderBay, then we get to Calgary and we're therefor 3 weeks. We then go on to Kelowna fora week, Penticton for a week, Red Deer fora week, Saskatoon for a week, Winnipeg fora week, and Ottawa for 2 weeks.

Will your wife perform with the group?

My wife is expecting our third child at themoment. I have two children, a son 5 and adaughter 3. My wife will be singing again assoon as this one arrives. We have been sing-ing together on and off for the last coupleOf years.

Do you prefer country rock music to theballad type sound of The Bells?

The country rock sound is probably closerme. I think what The Bells did suited the

group at that time. When I left The Bells,I thought that I would search out my ownthing and country rock is probably closerto what I'm into now. It hasn't been any-thing that has been done purposely. I start-ed singing at seventeen in a country band. I

then went through the Elvis Presley andBill Haley and the Comets rock and roll era.I became a singer in a rock and roll band. I

then formed The Bells and became a night-club type singer. Now all those things thatI have done are coming together and I justsing a combination of them. It just seems

to be naturally what I do. I'm not specifi-cally aimed at this or that, I'm just a singer. There are country leanings because I startedthere, there are rock leanings because I wentthrough that period, there are pop leaningsbecause The Bells were that. The combina-tion of everything is what I am.

Are you still active as a producer?

Yes, I'm getting more active. I produced. The Bells. The last major thing I did was afilm sound track for a Canadian movie that's

by David Sheehy

yet to be released, called "Lions for Break-fast". Nick Whitehead wrote most of themusic with a couple of other fellows. I

produced a single that's out now called"Bright Side of Tomorrow" which was re-corded by a group called Black Creek. I'mco -producing Tom Gallant at the moment.I'm getting back into producing, but notheavily. I'm concentrating on doing onething at a time and trying to do one well.

Concord Tavern setting for Lance YoungerLance Younger played to a full house threedays in a row during his first engagement inToronto. His fans crowded the Concord Ta-vern to hear his performance and were espe-cially delighted to hear his new release"Come on Country/Walk Out A Man". Hereceived numerous requests for his upcom-ing single, "Wanting You -Wanting Me", tobe released shortly on the Cloud Burst label.

On Friday night Carroll Baker was calledout of the audience and after singing "TenLittle Fingers" and her No. 1 hit song, "I'veNever Been This Far Before" left the audi-ence wanting for more. Younger called herup again to close the show with the popularduet "Jackson" which brought the house

According to Younger's manager, the youngsinger had an especially hard time becausethere was no harmony behind him.

When asked about the performance, DonCaruso, manager of the Concord, said hewas very pleased with Younger's deliveryand stage presence.

Bee Gees and Dudesset for major tourToronto rock outlet CFTR, in cooperationwith Concert Productions International, willpresent the Bee Gees at Maple Leaf Gar-dens Sept 29th at 8:00 PM.

Opening act will be Montreal's rock-ragersThe Dudes, recently signed to Columbia Re-cords. As opening act for most of the BeeGees' Canadian tour, the Dudes will includedates in Thunder Bay's Memorial GardensSept 22nd, Sault Ste. The readied album -release for the Dudes isentitled "We're No Angels", produced byMark Spector at Andre Perry's Le Studio, which is situated just north of Montreal.Billed in Phonograph Magazine as "Mon-treal's New Pop Goldmine", the Dudes havebeen given a full -cover centre -section fold-out treatment by the Hollywood consumerpaper.

In the article, written by Greg Shaw, theDudes are expected to be the "new hopefor the pop -starved masses".

"They won't be the first to attempt an inva-sion of the States", writes Shaw, as he ex-plains that Mahogony Rush, April Wine andMoonquake : "have all made stabs at it, butthey are the first to do so with any of thestyle and sophistication that Montreal repre-sents, and the first to try it with the supportof a major record company".

He goes on with "the music is stronglyrhythmic, polyrhythmic even, with a dancebeat right out of the discos - but it's whitedisco music, not Average White Band, butreal teenage music grounded in the Elvis-

Beatles tradition, applied to the new univer-sal beat of the Seventies".

Montreal may have a music -maker or origi-nality in their midst. The Bee Gees are theBrothers Gibb, Barry, Maurice and Robin.

Known for years as the white -cream of top -40, the Bee Gees have finally layed down onthe Soul Train tracks. Their album, "MainCourse", signals the beginnings of the En-glish boys to the disco -sound scene.

Their single, "Jive Tal kin"', is a sought-aftermonster, which moved into the No. 1 posi-tion on RPM's 100 Chart (Aug 16), seemshard to believe that the song is deliveredby the three writers in question

entitled "We're No Angels", produced by Mark Spector at Andre Perry's Le Studio, which is situated just north of Montreal. Billed in Phonograph Magazine as "Mon- treal's New Pop Goldmine", the Dudes have

been given a full -cover centre -section fold- out treatment by the Hollywood consumer

paper.

In the article, written by Greg Shaw, the Dudes are expected to be the "new hope

for the pop -starved masses".

"They won't be the first to attempt an inva- sion of the States", writes Shaw, as he ex-

plains that Mahogony Rush, April Wine and Moonquake : "have all made stabs at it, but

they are the first to do so with any of the style and sophistication that Montreal repre-

sents, and the first to try it with the support of a major record company".

He goes on with "the music is strongly rhythmic, polyrhythmic even, with a dance

beat right out of the discos -

but it's white disco music, not Average White Band, but

real teenage music grounded in the Elvis -

Beatles tradition, applied to the new univer- sal beat of the Seventies".

Montreal may have a music -maker or origi- nality in their midst. The Bee Gees are the

Brothers Gibb, Barry, Maurice and Robin.

Known for years as the white -cream of top - 40, the Bee Gees have finally layed down on the Soul Train tracks. Their album, "Main

Course", signals the beginnings of the En- glish boys to the disco -sound scene.

Their single, "Jive Talkin"', is a sought-after monster, which moved into the No. 1 posi-

tion on RPM's 100 Chart (Aug 16), seems hard to believe that the song is delivered

by the three writers in question

Whatever, with Arif Mardin's production, the number and entire album effect a sparkling

expectation of gold. Their "Nights Of Broadway" seems to be popular with the

Hopefully, Joe Farrell will be in perform-ance with tenor sax, but only Ahmet Erte-gun knows for sure.

The Dudes are big and so are the Bee Gees -such factors weigh for an involving musicalevent.

CBC transcription service shutting out independentsA CBC-Radio decision to devote more airtime to recordings produced in their ownstudios has riled up some of Canada's inde-pendent record producers. Producers areclaiming that their own emerging Canadiantalent will be blocked from the country'sonly national radio network.

The Corporation's overall 50 per cent Can -

con airplay will remain the same, althoughby next June ('76), 40 per cent of the Can-

con will be produced by the network forbroadcasting and not for sale to the public.Current broadcast recordings represent 25to 30 per cent of all music played on CBC-Radio.

Greg Hambleton, president of the 25 -mem-ber Canadian Independent Record ProducersAssociation has said that "it's quite unfairthat the CBC decides to block us off to thisdegree, just when we're starting to buildstars and starting to get records on import-ant charts."

Of the total CIRPA membership, 12 repre-sent all -Canadian owned record labels andthe other, 13 unaffiliated producers. "CBCis shutting us out", Hambleton said, butBill Armstrong, the head of CBC-Radio hassaid that, "I'm not aware of such a vastlibrary of privately -produced Canadian stuffthat's available. The 40 per cent seemsreasonable to me. We did it out of need, nota perverse desire to compete with the pri-vate sector." Armstrong implied that the

production of broadcast recordings won'tincrease by much, but records that air madewill be aired to a much greater extent.

Al Mair, president of Attic Records, whichin its first year of operation has put 10 per-formers under contract, produced four al-bums, and has scheduled four more for afall -release said that "it's a definite slap inthe face of struggling Canadian recordingfirms."

"All this is going to do is put more moneyinto the hands of studio musicians who arealready doing very well, and into the handsof some performers who either aren't readyor who can't get recording contracts. CBCshould be trying to help give support to re-cording companies that are putting theirown money on the line."

A gradual increase of air -time between thisweek and next June will achieve a 40 percent in-house content according toArmstrong.

"Many of our better stations already have a70 per cent Cancon, so that would leave 30per cent for the privately -made recordings",he said.

The private producers on the other hand, saythat those stations are few and far between.

According to Armstrong his 40 per centwould include pop to classical tastes, ...the classics being in very short supply fromthe private sector.

Thank You! ...----

George Springate, Liberal backbencher inthe Quebec National Assembly, has sup-ported Robertson in his petition against theBill. Within ten days the petition has report-edly gathered the names of more than threehundred thousand Quebekers.

The headquarters for the petition is the lob-by of CFCF.

Quebec Premier Bourassa was quoted as say-ing: "He will never receive my support", ad-ding: "The attitude of radio station CFCFcontributes nothing to the understandingbetween different ethnic groups and is avery negative attitude which won't help usfind a solution to the complex problems fac-ing Quebec."

Well-known and controversial broadcaster,Gordon Sinclair Jr., summed up the situa-tion as: For all those who live outside Que-bec, our new language regulations will bringa million laughs - we must carry Frenchsigns, even if we are English workers strikingagainst an English boss - but when you livehere, it isn't funny. It's sick, with perhapsthe sickest feature being that nationalists inour society are going to be encouraged.Bourassa, you and your ministers sometimesappear to be a bunch of foolish, childish, petulent, vindictive jerks. And, by the way, what's the French word for jerk?"

According to Sun staffer Mark Bonokoski,Bill 22 "excuses" French for English-speak-ing Quebekers and "excuses" English forFrench-speaking Quebekers.

Robertson has said " . . . the extremists ... . . they're the ones ... all they read

is about some rebellion against the French. It's a sorry day when you can't record ademocratic protest."

Let me tell you why I am going to pickTherrien as a longshot. Recently I inter-viewed Mrs. Patricia (Pat) Pearce for a fea-ture article I was writing. When the inter-view was over she asked me if I had ever metMonsieur Therrien. rette advertising, then they can do the same thing with drugs", he said.

He stressed that "reliance on industry self -

regulation has resulted in unrestricted ad- vertising of over the counter drugs to audi-

ences comprised of large numbers of young children.

Paul Gold, chief of consumer protection in Bellioti's office, told the delegate members

that a rerun of "Hee Haw" was aired on a

station in their 10:00 AM Saturday children's slot, in which the station broadcast ads for

"Geritol", "Sominex", and "Alka-Seltzer."

"The battle to change the drug habits of adults is uncertain", Gold said, "so I would

like to prevent youngsters from being baited into the myth -ridden culture."

Both men believe that children under 12 are influenced by over the counter drug adver-

tising, whereby a salvation from distress is

instantly available with no adverse conse-

quences.

"In the first six months of 1972, the amount cal

of money spent on advertising sedatives, sleeping products, and headache remedies 3

was $40.6 million on network television o - co

alone", Bellioti said. ro

looking for records from a range of othercompanies and, in fact, if I can't fill orderssatisfactorily, then I shall import from theStates, because I cannot afford not to retainmomentum.

What about the costs of duty?

I've read the official circular and it sort ofsays that special allowances will be made tobonafide companies doing importing pro-duct from overseas. What on earth thatmeans, no one has yet explained or clari-fied. We import all our classical product. AsI mentioned to you, we shall have to importsome of our American product in order tofulfill demand. The record manufacturers inCanada have not been able, in light of theMCA strike, to meet all the commitmentswe have placed with them.

Will that mean a price restructuring?

No, it will mean that we will have to swal-low hard and get less money. But I feel a re-sponsibility where we have hit product to,not only to the artists but to the retailer andrack jobber - to furnish the product. I amaware that our fill rates have gone belowthe levels that I would like to have seen andaccordingly I have to have supplies, and if Ican't get them in Canada I'll have to gosomewhere else.

What are your feelings about returns?

Returns in a market like Canada must beworrying to everybody because to ship pro-duct out over thousands of miles and to re-ceive it back over thousands of miles wouldseem, to any objective observer, a reallyrather ridiculous proposition. It seems to meit costs everyone a very large amount ofmoney, time and bother.. However, it wouldbe foolish to say that one can change situa-tions which have been current for manyyears, quickly, and I think our feeling is - wehave a very clear policy on returns whichlimits the amount that can be returned byrack jobbers and we have a different policyfor retailers which permits exchanges to bemade. I believe in general terms, returns area very great evil which this industry shouldbe looking for ways to overcome. It seemsto me that we talk, at our company, interms of net turnover, but when you addwhat returns mean, in terms of handling andso on, it really is a terrible burden.

Didn't you have a return problem in Eng-land?

No, because there are virtually no return al-lowances given to the retail trade and re-cords are sold by the retail trade at lowerprices if they cannot be moved. When I leftEngland, we only took returns on qualitydefects and the situation is just not com-parable with North America at all.

What are your feelings about the 30% Cana-dian content legislation for radio stations?

England, we only took returns on quality defects and the situation is just not com- parable with North America at all.

What are your feelings about the 30% Cana- dian content legislation for radio stations?

It's not working satisfactorily and it's not achieving what everybody wants it to do. I

don't really know the history of how it came about, but I suspect it is due to be

changed and amended. What we want is leg-

islation which is prepared with people who really know the music industry and we want

legislation which brings results and benefits

to the artists and to the record industry. I

think there are a number of proposals in

this respect that really have my support. I

think the CRIA is doing a good job in put- ting these forward. Government legislation,

unless it is carefully prepared, can turn out to be a very clumsy tool. So, I hope that

any future legislation will be carefully pre- pared with people who are experts in the field of the music industry.

Do you think legislation is necessary in a

country like Canada?

I think that the music industry, as a whole, is not recognized in governmental circles as

important as it really is. I don't think the

government really believes the music indus-

try is an important element. I think that people in government circles place enor-

mous respect on films and books and cul-

ture in those two art forms but somehow, music is not given the same treatment and

I think that's what we're after. We're asking

to be considered seriously as an important industry which has come of age and should

be treated accordingly. There are an enor- mous number of people in Canada who real-

ly live for music and it is a kind of general -

ism of the arts and, I feel that we should somehow bang the drum a little bit more for

the music industry and make sure the gov- ernment realizes just how many dollars flow

back to Canada as a result of Canadian acts.

ED WA RDS continued from page 10

My most natural thing is being an enter- tainer.

Do you think you will produce your own -

group?

No, I think I'm going to cool that, too. We

have been talking to some American pro- ducers. We want a big name. We have a

couple of people who are interested and I

think that is my next step. It's tough to be objective about yourself. Producing myself

is a tougher job than I thought it would be.

Other people can be more objective.

How did you like working in T.V.?

Tough grind. It takes years to learn to be

an entertainer and to learn to be in front of people and do it well and be natural. It

takes just as long to learn that in television.

It's a whole different ball of wax. It would be a learning process and I'm not so sure I

want to do that. I did it for a couple of years and I think it's the security of a T.V. show that one thinks about. I stayed with

it for a couple of seasons because I had a family and I didn't have to travel. Unless

you have the big bucks and are getting national exposure, it's a tough grind. I

don't think it helps your record sales at all.

I've been approached to do a couple of specials and that's interesting. It shows the

public that you can do television, but they can't turn you on every Wednesday night

at 7:30. I don't want them to see me every Wednesday night at 7:30, I want them

to pay money to come and see me in a club and to pay money to go out and buy my

records. They won't do that if they see you every week. They won't do that unless

you're a huge name and even then your records can suffer.
