The Monthly Weather Review - Queensland is produced twelve times each year by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology'sQueensland Climate Services Centre.

It is intended to provide a concise but informative overview of the temperatures, rainfall and significant weather events inQueensland for the month.

To keep the Monthly Weather Review as timely as possible, much of the information is based on electronic reports. Although everyeffort is made to ensure the accuracy of these reports, the results can be considered only preliminary until complete quality controlprocedures have been carried out. Major discrepancies will be noted in later issues.

Units of measurementExcept where noted, temperature is given in degrees Celsius (°C), rainfall in millimetres (mm), and wind speed in kilometres per hour(km/h).

Observation times and periodsEach station in Queensland makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over the past 24hours is determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the followingconventions are used for assigning dates to the observations made:

Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hours from 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of that day.

Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of that day.

Mean temperatures are the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum temperatures.

Daily rainfall is for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. This means a significant fraction of the rain may have occurred onthe previous calendar day.

Monthly rainfall is for the period from 9 am on the last day of the previous month to 9 am on the last day of this month.

Maximum daily wind gusts are in the 24 hours from midnight to midnight.

Climatological valuesThe climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from all availableyears of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot thenbe calculated reliably. Climatological extremes are generally taken from available observations from all available years of record. Thenumber of years can vary substantially from site to site.

Hail reportsinclude: softball sized hail north of Pittsworth; cricketball sized hail at Brookstead; 5−6 cm sized hail atRiverhills ,Goombangee, Redbank Plains; 4 cm sizedhail at Millmerran, Oakey, and Inala; 2−3 cm sizedhail at Albany Creek.

18th: Golf ball sized hail in western suburbs ofBrisbane including Middle Park, Riverhills, Kenmoreand Moggill; 9 cm hail near Boonah; 6 cm hail andtree damage reported near Biggenden and similarsized hail reported near Ipswich; 4 cm hail atBeerburrum; 3 cm hail at Caboolture, SpringfieldLakes, Greenbank, Jandowae and Yamanto; 2 cm hailreported at Ashgrove and Bulimba.

19th: 2 cm hail reported from Childers atapproximately 4 pm, golf ball sized hail reported nearDuaringa, and heavy rainfall in the Blackwater andDingo area (85 mm/hour).

22nd: 2 cm sized hail reported at Laidley andYarraman, and 4 - 5 cm hail reported at a locationabout 8km south of Nanango

23rd: 3 cm hail reported at Wandoan at 6:40 pm, and2 - 4 cm hail reported near Chinchilla at around7:10 pm.

Synoptic summaryAt the start of the month, a high pressure systemlocated over the Tasman Sea extended a weak ridgealong the Queensland east coast. Conditions werefine and mostly sunny across much of the state, witha High to Very High Fire Danger over the far northernand most of the southern districts, and a Severe FireDanger over the state’s southwest. The followingday, a surface trough was located over the northwestand down to the central interior. Showers andthunderstorms occurred over the northwest andabout the Gulf Country.

By the 3rd, the surface trough was lying over thewestern Coral Sea and onto the Capricorn coast,while another trough was located over the CentralHighlands. Scattered showers and thunderstorms,with a few drizzle areas, were recorded over theCentral Highlands, while showers and isolatedthunderstorms were present over the far northwestand western Gulf Country. The trough extended overcentral coast waters into the central interior of thestate and weakened as it contracted further northduring the next day. Fresh, northerly winds and hottemperatures resulted over far western Queensland.Some isolated and scattered showers occurred overthe central coast districts north of Rockhampton,along with isolated showers over the south east.

By the 5th, the trough over tropical waters wasmoving northwards and weakening. Another surfacetough was moving east over central Australiaduringthe day and was located in far western Queenslandby the evening. Isolated showers fell over the fareastern tropics, increasing to scattered showersabout the north tropical coast during the day. Thesurface trough was near south westernQueenslandby the 6th, and remained slow moving.Showers and isolated gusty thunderstorms werepresent south west of about Mt Isa to Charleville,with some isolated showers and thunderstorms overremaining parts of the state. A Severe Fire Dangerwas present in the eastern Channel Country, CentralWest and western Maranoa and Warrego districts.

On the 8th, a surface trough over south westQueensland moved slowly eastwards during the dayas an upper trough developed over centralAustraliaand moved closer to the Queenslandborder.Thundery rain fell over the Channel Country and theMaranoa and Warrego districts with scatteredshowers and thunderstorms over much of the westand central interior, spreading to the southern inlanddistricts in the afternoon. As the surface troughmoved further eastwards, and was accompanied byan upper trough which was also moving into thewest of the state, rain areas and thunderstormsdeveloped over most of the interior and southernborder regions on the 9th. By the 10th, the surfacetrough over eastern Queensland moved through thesoutheast coast, and continued further north overthe next few days. Patchy rainfall contracted east

during the 10th, with some isolated thunderstormactivity.

The surface trough was lying over Capricornia watersand moved north to the southern tropical coast bythe 11th, generating some isolated to scatteredshowers about the northern tropics. A weakeningridge of high pressure extended along the northeastern Queensland coast on the 15th, and a troughwas moving east over central Australiaduring theday, approaching the far south western border bythe evening. Hot, gusty north to north westerlywinds ahead of the change maintained a Severe toExtreme Fire Danger over many western andsouthern districts.

On the 17th, a surface trough moved throughMoretonBayand stalled just near the SunshineCoaston the 19th. The trough eventually moved north tothe WideBaycoast on the 19th, and into theCapricornia coast on the 20th. A series of upper leveltroughs maintained instability over the southeastregion into the 19th. Isolated showers andthunderstorms occurred over the souther interior,with thunderstorms redeveloping over the interiorfrom a band from the Gulf region to the southeast inthe afternoon of the 17th. Other reports of hail fromaffected locations can be found above in "SignificantWeather".

Isolated showers and thunderstorms fell overnorthern and eastern districts, tending to scatteredabout the central districts and the northern tropics.Isolated showers and thunderstorms occurred overthe southeast coast and border ranges .

A weakening trough was located on the centralcoast, and connected to a low over the Coral Sea onthe 21st. Isolated showers and thunderstormsoccurred generally over the tropics and extendedsouth into the southern tropics and central interior.

A surface trough lay over the Queenslandinterior andover northern New South Waleson the 23rd, and anupper level trough was just offshore over the CoralSea. Scattered showers and thunderstorms fell overthe northwest, with some isolated showers over thecentral and southeast districts. The surface troughstretched from the northeast to the southern interioron the 24th, causing isolated showers andthunderstorms in a belt from the northwest, throughthe central interior and to the southeast interior.Areas of morning thundery rain continued thefollowing day about the north eastern parts of theCentralHighlands and Coalfields district, and theCapricornia and CentralCoast districts.

On the 27th, a weak surface trough lay over theChannel Country, generating isolated showers andthunderstorms in the northwest of the state. Anupper level trough approached far south westernQueenslandon the same day, and moved north east

across southern Queensland the next day. Isolatedshowers and thunderstorms fell over the westerndistricts of the state. The following day, scatteredshowers and thunderstorms fell across westerndistricts and parts of the southeast.

By the end of the month, a trough situated acrosssoutheast Queensland was slow moving andexpected to weaken, and another slow movingtrough was located across central Australia.

TemperaturesThe mean temperature for Queensland in November2012 was 28.10 °C, which is 0.97 °C above thelong-term average. (which is 27.13 °C).

Warm conditions were experienced across most ofthe state, apart from the Capricornia and CentralCoast districts. A large expanse of the southwest wasabove the average, with the far southwest cornerexperiencing mean temperatures up to 4 °C abovethe long term average.

The warmest on average was Normanton Airportwith 31.6 °C, followed by Century Minewith 31.5 °C,followed by Cloncurry Airport with 31.5 °C, followedby Camooweal Township with 31.4 °C.

The coolest on average was Applethorpe with19.2 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with19.7 °C, followed by Jimna Forestry with 20.7 °C.

Maximum temperaturesThe maximum temperature for Queensland inNovember 2012 was 35.64 °C, which is 1.50 °C abovethe long-term average (which is 34.14 °C).

Maximum temperatures were up to 5 °C above in thefar south west....

The hottest day was at Birdsville Airport with 45.1 °Con the 29th, then Century Mine with 44.7 °C on the21st, followed by Birdsville Airportwith 44.5 °C onthe 26th.

The warmest days on average were at Julia CreekAirport and Urandangi, both with 40.0 °C, followedby Trepell Airport with 39.8 °C, and then CenturyMine and Cloncurry Airport, both with 39.7 °C

The coolest day was at Applethorpe with 18.8 °C onthe 10th, then Toowoomba Airport with 19.0 °C onthe 10th, followed by Jimna Forestry with 19.5 °C onthe 10th.

The coolest days on average were at Cape MoretonLighthouse with 25.5 °C.

Minimum temperaturesThe minimum temperature for Queensland inNovember 2012 was 20.55 °C, which is 0.44 °C belowthe long-term average (which is 20.11 °C).

The coldest night was at Applethorpe with 5.5 °C onthe 13th, then Stanthorpe Leslie Parade with 6.2 °Con the 13th, followed by Applethorpe with 6.8 °C onthe 12th.

The coolest nights on average were at Applethorpewith 12.1 °C, followed by Stanthorpe Leslie Paradewith 12.8 °C, and then Warwick with 13.7 °C.

The warmest nights on average were at SweersIsland with 27.2 °C, followed by Mornington Islandwith 26.7 °C, and then Normanton Airport with25.9 °C.

The warmest night was at Birdsville Airport with31.6 °C on the 27th, followed by Birdsville Airportwith 31.0 °C on the 30th, and then Ballera Gas Fieldwith 30.5 °C on the 27th.

RainfallThe rainfall for Queensland in November 2012 was30.14 mm which is 15.65 mm below the long-termaverage (which is 45.79 mm).

Above average rainfall was recorded only in parts ofwestern Queensland along the NT border, smallareas in the Gulf Country and patchy areas over theSoutheast Coast district. Much of the east coast andadjacent inland recorded below to very much belowaverage for the month, while the remaining areas ofthe state recording average rainfall.

The wettest overall was Mundubbera with210.7 mm, followed by Dunollie with 190.8 mm,followed by Hilltop Gardens with 187.6 mm.

Despite the lower than normal area-average rainfallacross the state, there were several thunderstormsthroughout the month, some severe. Severe stormsdeveloped in the state on the 17th and 18th. Asurface trough stretched from northwestQueensland to the southeast interior and down to alow over New South Wales. Moisture ahead of thetrough over eastern Queensland produced severestorms with instability associated with the troughextending to northern Queensland. The 18th saw thetrough extending from the northwest, down toinland parts of the southeast. Thunderstormsdeveloped ahead of the trough, with some severethunderstorms about parts of central and southeastQueensland.

The wettest single day was at Hilltop Gardens with124.4 mm on the 18th, then Theodore with 122.0 onthe 10th, followed by Dunollie with 118.4 mm on the10th.
