Included herein is Status Report No. 3 describing the progress achieved during the months of September, October and November. Activities during this period include the following tasks:
IE Remedial Investigation Work Plan 3C Sampling and Analysis of Ground Water 3D Soils/Water/Sediment/Fish Investigations.
Task IE: Remedial Investigation Work Plan
A Supplement to the Work Plan was developed in draft form during the last two weeks of November to address EPA's comments that were discussed during the October 17, 1985 meeting held at the O'Hare Hilton in Chicago. The Supplement to the Work Plan includes a revised project schedule, additional details on the sampling and analysis rationale for Phases I and II, Site Operations Plan and Data Management Plan.
Task 3: Site Investigations
The Phase I sampling program was completed with Phase Ic sampling con-' ducted on September 23, 24, and 25, 1985 and Phase Id sampling conducted on November 18, 19, and 20, 1985. An updated listing of all the samples collected to-date is attached as Appendix A. A revised list of the parameters included for analysis in Analyses Sets A through H is included in Appendix A.

Task 3C: Sampling and Analysis of Ground Water
Ground water samples are scheduled to be collected for analysis during the Phase II sampling program. However, ground water elevations and field pH measurements, as presented in Table 1, were obtained during the Phase Id sampling effort.
Task 3D: Soils/Water/Sediment/Fish Investigations
Phase Ic:
During September 23, 24, and 25, 1985, soil samples were collected from 102 locations within the Area 9 building complex (Site No. 33). A total of 188 samples (plus 21 duplicates and 10 spikes) were collected, as follows:
a. 49 surface soil samples from 49 separate locations b. 10 ditch soil samplesfrom 10 separate locations c. 129 core soil samples (0-1, 1-2, and 2-3 feet) from 43 separate
locations.
Out of the 188 samples collected, 184 samples were scheduled for analysis per Analysis Set B, while 4 samples were scheduled for Analysis Set D (see parameter list for Analyses Sets in Appendix A ) .
The sampling locations were surveyed at the Area 9 building complex q using a transit.,afl<ra detailed sample location map is being prepared,^L.. »
Phase Id:
A second round of re-sampling was conducted on November 18, 19, and 20, 1985 at selected locations (all sites except the Area 9 landfill and Area 9 building complex) that were previously sampled for the Analyses Sets A and D suite of parameters. Phase Id samples were scheduled for organics analysis using the full CLP protocol. These organics included purgeables, acid extractables, base/neutrals, pesticides, PCB's, polychlorinated dioxins, and polychlorinated dibenzofurans. The locations for Phase Id sampling were based on a review of analytical data obtained from previous analyses for priority pollutants (screening), PCBs, TOC, TOX and organic nitrogen.
The attached Table 2 presents the number of samples collected at each site, while specific details on the samples are included in Appendix A. A total of 27 samples (plus 4 duplicates, 2 spikes, and 3 Fish & Wildlife Service replicates) were collected. Of these, 17 samples were scheduled for analysis per Analysis Set F (full CLP protocol) and 10 samples were scheduled for analysis per Analysis Set G (full CLP protocol and PCDD/PCDF).

A complete listing of the analytical data from analyses completed to-date will be sent to Dick Ruelle for preliminary review. A summary of the analytical data including a statistical analysis is included as Appendix B.
Phase II Sampling
We anticipate initiating the Phase II sampling during March 1985. A review of the analytical data from the Phase I sampling effort will be conducted prior to that time to select Phase II sampling locations and analytical parameters.
