FOREWORD

The aim of this document is to provide users with the latest available PCT filing (i.e. international patent applicationsfiled using the PCT procedure) statistics. It includes two types of statistics namely, PCT filing statistics and medium of filingstatistics (i.e. method used to file international patent applications). This document includes PCT filing statistics for the mostrecent months (plus year total). All the data used in this document, along with longer time series, are available for download

from the PCT statistics website:

www.wipo.int/ipstats/en/statistics/pct

Methodological Information

The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) is an international treaty administered by the World Intellectual PropertyOrganization (WIPO). The PCT makes it possible to seek patent protection for an invention simultaneously in a large numberof countries by filing a single "international" patent application. The PCT procedure consists of an international phase and anational/regional phase. The decision on whether to confer patent rights remains in the hands of the national and/or regionalpatent offices.

Statistics reported in this document are based on:

The international phase of the PCT procedure (i.e. this does not include national/regional phase statistics).

Counts are based on country of origin, which is the country of the residence of the first-named applicant orassignee. In some cases (e.g. the United States of America) the country of residence of the inventor (instead ofapplicant) is used to determine country of origin.

The receiving Office is the patent office where the international patent application is filed. The receiving Officecould be a national office, or a regional office, or the International Bureau.

Counts are based on the international filing date (i.e. the date on which the international application is filed with areceiving Office).

The PCT statistics for the most recent months are provisional and incomplete.
