President’s

New Year Greeting

I would like to wish all of our members a Happy New Year. A special thank you to the club officers, Chairmen, and members for their hard work in 2012. The year 2013 offers much excitement as well as many Challenges. I encourage you to offer your support by attending our functions with families and friends.

Bill Galgon, President

AMATEUR ADULT SOCCER The German Hungarians have a rich and storied history in soccer that goes back to the year 1922. 2013 marks the 91st Anniversary of Soccer at our club! Our high level of play and organization will not be lost in two-thousand and thirteen! Currently our club boasts six adult teams. Two of these are Women’s teams and four are Men’s. Our adults play in Major, Under-23, Over-30 and Over-40 divisions in The United Soccer League of Pennsylvania, the Inter-County League, as well as the MSSL. Our German Hungarian Fury Women finished 6-0-1 and in second place in the United Soccer League fall season and have since taken the show indoors at YSC Sports in Hatboro! The Lady Dragons are currently in fifth place in the league. The Men’s team currently sits in first place in the United League with a record of 4-3-1. The team also entered both the Open and Amateur Cups. After being knocked out of both state cups the team continues on its course for the Major Divi-sion Championship. The team is led by Head Coach Michael Curley, Manager Werner Fricker III, and recently named Captain Brian Blesi.

YOUTH SOCCER PROGRAM The ever growing Youth Program is under the faithful leadership of Soccer Director Andy Weyershaeuser. With nine boys and six girls teams the ages range from under eight all the way up to high school age under eighteens. Our teams travel all over the East coast for tourna-ments including as far as Florida. Our Coaches come from all walks of life and many of them are former of current players on our adult teams! In addition to that our Youth Soccer Academy is al-ways busy with youngsters as little as two years.

DANCING AROUND Our Club has been a center for Culture for over one hundred years. The Cultural group is the driv-ing force behind this need to connect with our roots and uphold the culture that we all claim together as German Hungarians. The Cultural Group is bigger than the sum of its parts. It is held together by its facets and those facets are held together by the people that have a passion for these ideals. It is the charge of Chairman Susi Hartmann to bring the Cultural Group forward and take it in directions both traditional as well as new and interesting! The Cultural Group is the heart of what we do today and is a group that strives to never waver in their progress. From the newborn to the elders who started it all, this group has no age limits! Dancing Around, our ever fitting title for this col-umn describes exactly what the group intends to do in 2013! The dance group will also be taking on various events coming soon as fundraisers to sup-port what they do! Find them at home and follow them all over the nation this year as we prepare for our Kirchweihfest, Gaufest in Cleveland, Ohio and the Landestreffen in Detroit, Michigan! Please Join the Family!

WOMEN’S AUXILIARY In the words of our esteemed editor, “You know, the Women’s Auxiliary is a committee of the Club. In other organizations women are members of their own group. Our UGH women can and are involved in every aspect of the club, on every lev-el, and they can do anything!” Under the com-mand of Chairman Connie Reiter these Women will continue our proud traditions, with their an-nual events schedule. Look forward to the Spring and Fall Penny Parties, as well as many other events that will come out of the dedicated minds of the Auxiliary's members! The women who quite literally man the reign’s of their own pro-gress, do so always with the best interest of the club at heart! These women are strong, and suc-cessful and they make a great paprikash too!

What is in store for our Club in 2013?

AMONG OUR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS Congratulations to Stephanie Wagner, daughter of our treasurer Michael Wagner and his wife Betty, and John Zygmont on their re-cent engagement. We hear Stephanie is doing well in her new business “Simply Twisted Fro-zen Yogurt” which is located in Horsham. Good Wishes and Prayers go out to Toni Kreutzer as we all wish her well in her recent illness. Sorry to hear of the death of Martin Hubner of Die Gemuetlichen Enzianer of Maspeth, New York. Marty died on November 10th 2012. He is a former officer of the Schuhplattler Gauverband and served in vari-ous capacities for a total of 33 years. He be-came a friend to the German Hungarians over the years, especially while working in the Phil-adelphia area, when he made many visits to our club. He was the choreographer of the “Gauplattler” and not only made many contri-butions to his own club but also to the Gau-verband. Our deepest sympathy to his family and his club. Our deepest sympathy to the family of the late Stefan Brenner on the death of his wife, Magdalene. She died at the age of 83 on January 10th 2013. The Brenner family are active in German Hungarian and Donauschwa-ben circles. Born in Yugoslavia she emigrated to the United States in 1950. The Funeral Mass took place at St. Cecilia. Elizabeth Metzger also died on Janu-ary 10th 2013. She had recently celebrated her 90th Birthday. She was the wife of 60 years of Stephen. They were both members of our club who always enjoyed dancing together at our social affairs. Betty was also born in Yugoslavia and she arrived in the US in 1924. Coinci-dentally her Funeral Mass was also at the St. Cecilia Parish. A group of Club members and friends traveled recently to Riedelbauers Resort in Round Top NY for a weekend of skiing and winter sports. They report that a fantastic time was had by all!

ENTERTAINMENT 2013

As you can see, we have various activities planned for your enjoyment during 2013. Each event whether it may seem a small event or a large event is important in our schedule. Sometimes a smaller event is just as much fun as a larger one. We invite all our members to join us for all our events Our Women’s Auxiliary under the chairmanship of Connie Reiter has planned a Tea Social for Sunday, January 27th. This event was originally scheduled in 2012 and many have looked forward to the rescheduling. The afternoon (1:00 to 3:00 pm) will include full tea or coffee service with tea sandwiches and pastries. Reservations are a must. Call Cindy Proll at 267.566.7239. On Friday, March 8th A Girls Night Out – A Shopping Extravaganza will be held. More information will be forthcoming. On Sunday, April 21st, our Women and their friends will tour the QVC Studio at 12 Noon. A bus will depart our club at 10 AM and after the tour, dinner will be at the Seven Stars Inn in Phoenixville at 3 PM. Our Spring Penny Party will be held on Wednes-day May 15th while the Fall Penny Party will be on November 13th. A Crabfest and a Wine Tour are also in future plans. On Saturday, November 2nd a Fall Craft Fair will take place. Look for information on these events in our future newsletters. Our Entertainment Committee under chairman, Renny Papendick informs us that a Super Bowl Party on Sunday, February 3rd as well as a Valentine’s Party on Saturday, February 9th are planned. Can it really be that our 103rd Anniversary is here! We will celebrate with a gala banquet on Saturday, March 23rd. Also, something new is planned! A Music and Beer Festival to take place on Saturday, April 20th. Sundays, May 12th and June 16th we will honor all the Moms and the Dads. Our Rocktoberfest and Oktoberfest will take place in late September while our Halloween Party for adults and children alike, Schocktoberfest, is on Saturday, October 26th. Our Club Christmas Party will take place on Sunday, Decem-ber 15th and our Cultural Group will once again present their famous Nativity Scene. Various Cultural activities will take place throughout the year, some at our club and some across the area and the nation. The group has planned a number of various monthly events under the banner of “Fun Fridays!” These are meant to be fun and ex-citing evenings tentatively set for the first Friday of each month. The first of these events, that will benefit the groups activities, is the MARTINI NIGHT on Friday February 1st. In March they will hold a Fish Fry on March 1st. Please support the group in these endeav-ors! Chairman, Susi Hartmann informs us that our club will host not only the Winterfest sponsored by various local middle and high schools but also the Mid-Atlantic Jugend Einzelplatteln Workshop and Competition will take place on Saturday, March 9th. This is an event which moves from Schuhplattler Group to Schuhplattler Group in the Mid-Atlantic Region each year. This is an opportunity for the younger dancers (up to age 17) to perform a single couple dance and spend time with old and new friends. We last host-ed this event in 2010. On Sunday, June 16th, in conjunction with our Father’s Day Picnic, our Prize Plattler Schuhplattler Group will do their Gau Warm-up as the competition takes place during the weekend of June 22 -23rd at the Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio. When we return, our club will host the annual German-American Day sponsored by the Steuben Day Association on Sunday, June 30th. During the Labor Day Weekend, our group plans to travel to Detroit, Michigan to participate in the annual Danube Swabian Landestreffen. After participating in all our Oktoberfest festivities, we will put on our Banater Kirchweih Tracht and join our members to celebrate our Traditional German Hungarian Kirchweihfest on November 9th. Our Soccer Director, Andy J. Weyershaeuser, informs us that a Youth Soccer Ban-quet will take place on Saturday, March 2nd to honor all our youth players while our Major Soccer Team and friends will attend the annual Donauschwaben Soccer Tournament on the Memorial Day Weekend May 25 – 27th at the Milwaukee Sport Club in Wisconsin. Our Annual General Membership Meeting will take place on Sunday, March 3rd. This is a very informative meeting and we encourage all our members to attend.

Friends from across the Pond! One of the interesting things about our Club is that we meet many different people at our events. At Oktoberfest, we met a girl from Austria, Chris-tine Stern; she was in America working as an Au Pair for one year. She was looking to play soccer and became acquainted with Uche and Ike Onyea-dor, two of our Major Team soccer players. They invited her to our Oktoberfest this fall. Christine was amazed at our event and the authen-tic German feel of our Club and people. It reminded her of home and she was not expecting that at all in America. We saw Christine a few times since Oktoberfest, most recently at the Open Cup Quarter Finals. She came to say goodbye to her German/American friends! In December, she returned to Schonberg in Sto-baital in Tirol Austria to work in the family owned restaurant. She shared some pictures of her home with us what a lovely ski mountain village. We would like to wish our friend Christina a safe trip home, gute fahrt.
