THE RECORD January 2014 VOLUME 53

“So we make it our GOAL to please Him”

2 Corinthians 5:92

It is a good thing to set Goals to be challenged, to have something to work toward, to motivate us. As we set goals we also need to ask ourselves: Who am I out to please and honor by striving for these goals? If it is for self recognition (which our sinful nature loves) then our motive is not honorable. If it is to please others—that can be good, but then we have to ask ourselves—is my action motivated by guilt? Or to be well thought of by others or is it because I love and care about them? A higher and by far the best motive to reach a goal is to set out to Honor and Please God. I strive to be a goal setter, but I must admit my motives are not always to Honor and Please God first and foremost. I have ongoing work to do to improve in this area of my life. Some goals get achieved, others are adjusted due to the circumstances of life. Such as it has been the goal of our staff to strive to get the RECORD out in a timely fashion (before or at least by the end of the month). Well as you are reading you are justified in saying, “Well Pastor Bruce you sure missed that goal this month!” Yes, you are right—what a way to begin the New Year! The goal had to be readjusted/sacrificed this time, not due to the rest of the staff for it all falls on me. With all the demands of services and sermons to write, counseling, visits, and helping the needy, etc. etc. This fell way near the bottom of my priorities. A readjusted goal this time. So what Goals can we make at Our Redeemer? We are asking our staff, boards, and committees to set goals and some of the things I list below will be discussed by them and we will see what Goals they set.

Worship Attendance: in 2013 averaged 295- about the same as last year. What goal will the Elders set for 2014? 320? 325? What would we need to do to increase our average attendance by 25? Who would do this? Whom would we be out to please?

Bible Study Involvement: Do we set a goal to add more study groups or to increase the numbers coming to current groups or both? What would it take to increase the numbers in Bible Study by 40?

Stewardship Commitments: If the voter’s set our budget solely based on the commitments received from 26 family units (so far) we’d only have enough to cover the Trustee’s Budget to take care of God’s House ($88,000). Some churches I know do set their budget based only on commitments, as does the MN North District, based on congregation mission commitments. Please do not misunderstand my comments here for I know a goodly number of God’s people at ORLC give to the best of their ability which enables us to carry out God’s work here. But it helps tremendously, to have an idea of what giving goals individual families have made. So our stewardship board very well may discuss setting a Goal for 2015 of receiving 75 commitment forms from members. How would we attain that goal?

On January 19th we will receive a number of new members into our church family (that’s the 2nd time in the last three months that we’ve had this wonderful opportunity!). Several of them are joining by Adult Instruction. What would it take if we set a goal to receive 15-20 adult confirmands in 2014?

THE RECORD January 2014 VOLUME 53

God’s people at ORLC made “Glory to God”commitments totaling $250,000 and so far by God’s Grace and Blessing all but $57,000 has been received (some commitments go thru 2015). A Goal is to fulfill those commitments thus enabling us to pay off the organ, kitchen and the 10% for missions.

The Goal of our Council and Voter’s is to always strive to carry on business in an orderly God pleasing way following the guidelines of our constitution and by-laws. In December we held an orderly and God pleasing meeting but unintentionally failed to follow a guideline of our constitution and by-laws—thus the need for the specially called Voter’s Meeting on January 5th. So what happened? A “Call” was extended to Mark Noennig (on a vote of 70-6) to serve as a DCE/Campus Minister. In consultation with District President, Don Fondow, he said we are essentially filling a vacancy as Mark’s job description is very similar to that of Pastor Park’s. So President Fondow recommended that we offer a contract to Mark and then get together a call committee and call list. (our constitution by-laws requires a minimum of three people for the voter’s to select from to extend a proper call). Then set a call meeting to extend a call. So at the January 5th voter’s meeting motions will be presented to rescind the call to Mark Noennig, to issue him a contract, and to establish a call committee to move forward. The Goal of our council, voter’s and our church is to Honor and Please God and while we sometimes fall short of that we give thanks to our God of Grace who forgives us and gets us back on the track of living for Him and Serving Him in all that we do. In 2014 May we seek to please our loving and gracious God in all we do and may our Goal setting and decisions reflect our heartfelt love for Jesus and His Church.

THE RECORD January 2014 VOLUME 53

MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT When exposed to cold temperatures, your body begins to lose heat faster than it can be produced. The result is hypothermia, or abnormally low body temperature. Body temperature that is too low affects the brain, making the victim unable to think clearly or move well. This makes hypothermia particularly dangerous because a person may not know it is happening and won't be able to do anything about it.

Hypothermia occurs most commonly at very cold environmental temperatures, but can occur even at cool temperatures (above 40°F) if a person becomes chilled from rain, sweat, or submersion in cold water.

What should I do if I see someone with warning signs of hypothermia?

If medical care is not available, begin warming the person, as follows:

• Get the victim into a warm room or shelter. • If the victim has on any wet clothing, remove it. • Warm the center of the body first—chest, neck, head, and groin—using an electric

blanket, if available. Or use skin-to-skin contact under loose, dry layers of blankets, clothing, towels, or sheets.

• Warm beverages can help increase the body temperature, but do NOT give alcoholic beverages. Do not try to give beverages to an unconscious person.

• After body temperature has increased, keep the person dry and wrapped in a warm blanket, including the head and neck.

• Get medical attention as soon as possible.

What is frostbite?

Frostbite is an injury to the body that is caused by freezing. Frostbite causes a loss of feeling and color in affected areas. It most often affects the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers, or toes. Frostbite can permanently damage the body, and severe cases can lead to amputation.

What are the warning signs of frostbite?

At the first signs of redness or pain in any skin area, get out of the cold or protect any exposed skin—frostbite may be beginning. Any of the following signs may indicate frostbite:

• a white or grayish-yellow skin area • skin that feels unusually firm or waxy • numbness

Note: A victim is often unaware of frostbite until someone else points it out because the frozen tissues are numb.

5

THE RECORD January 2014 VOLUME 53

What should I do if I see someone with warning signs of frostbite?

If you detect symptoms of frostbite, seek medical care. Because frostbite and hypothermia both result from exposure, first determine whether the victim also shows signs of hypothermia, as described previously. Hypothermia is a more serious medical condition and requires emergency medical assistance.

If (1) there is frostbite but no sign of hypothermia and (2) immediate medical care is not available, proceed as follows:

• Get into a warm room as soon as possible. • Unless absolutely necessary, do not walk on frostbitten feet or toes—this increases the

damage. • Immerse the affected area in warm—not hot—water (the temperature should be

comfortable to the touch for unaffected parts of the body). • Or, warm the affected area using body heat. For example, the heat of an armpit can be

used to warm frostbitten fingers. • Do not rub the frostbitten area with snow or massage it at all. This can cause more

damage. • Don't use a heating pad, heat lamp, or the heat of a stove, fireplace, or radiator for

warming. Affected areas are numb and can be easily burned.

Note: These procedures are not substitutes for proper medical care. Hypothermia is a medical emergency and frostbite should be evaluated by a health care provider. It is a good idea to take a first aid and emergency resuscitation (CPR) course to prepare for cold-weather health problems. Knowing what to do is an important part of protecting your health and the health of others.

What should I do if I get stranded in cold weather?

• Tie a brightly colored cloth to the antenna as a signal to rescuers. • Move anything you need from the trunk into the passenger area. • Wrap your entire body, including your head, in extra clothing, blankets, or newspapers. • Stay awake. You will be less vulnerable to cold-related health problems. • Run the motor (and heater) for about 10 minutes per hour, opening one window slightly

to let in air. Make sure that snow is not blocking the exhaust pipe—this will reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

• As you sit, keep moving your arms and legs to improve your circulation and stay warmer. • Do not eat unmelted snow because it will lower your body temperature.

Gracious & Loving Father, You have created each of us, and have given us this great gift of life. Help us to treasure each moment, the happy ones and the sad ones, the healthy ones and the weak ones. When our lives are running smoothly, help us to turn to You in thanksgiving and praise. When our lives are in turmoil, help us turn to You for comfort and strength. By Your Word, assure us of Your loving presence in our daily lives. Keep us ever mindful of Your loving promise to always be with us. We pray now for these fellow members of Our Redeemer:

Quilting will begin again Jan 8th

November ended with us having a surplus for the month of $1,800.00. Through November, our income to expense deficit is at $20,000.00. All 2013 bills are paid to current and the checkbook balance is at $3500.00 as of December 23rd. The L.C.E.F. loan proceeds to pay for the boilers has been transferred to savings pending receipt of the final bills from Peterson Mechanical. We have submitted a claim to our building insurance carrier for any compensation due us on the mechanical failure of the boilers but have not received a decision. Thank you for your continued offerings that allow the Lord’s work to be done here and where ever else there is a need. May God bless you abundantly in 2014 and move you to share those blessings with Our Redeemer, Moorhead. Cindy Sprouls, Business Manager

We have a lot of quilt tops that are ready to tie thanks to everyone who faithfully sewed this summer. Our quilts were well received. The quilts auctioned off at Lutheran Island Camp sold for $160.00 and $105.00. I have not received an amount for the quilts sold at Boys Ranch. Six quilts were given to the Moorhead Habitat Family on Nov 18th. The children were so happy! Many were also sent to World Relief. We are in need of thread, top flat sheets and any large pieces of fabric. If you have any of these supplies to donate please leave them in the quilting room. Thank You!

Hats, Mittens & Scarves! All the hats and mittens went with the mission group to Canada this summer. We would love to send more with them this year. We have a lot of yarn and some patterns for you. You may pick up the yarn in the quilting room. Please call Sonja Beltz at 236-1876 with any questions.

VOTER’S MEETING DECEMBER 8, 2013 OUR REDEEMER LUTHERAN EVANGELICAL CHURCH MOORHEAD Wayne Settergren called the meeting to order and Pastor Bruce opened with devotion and prayer. Voter’s Meeting Minutes: Add verbiage to the Business Manager’s Report for the September minutes to state: Approximately $11-12,000 in donations have been sent from the Glory to God campaign to make a World for Christ with about $8,000 remaining. A MOTION was made and carried to accept the September minutes. A MOTION was made and carried to accept the November minutes. Business Manager Report: Income figures include the LCEF loan. A MOTION was made and carried to accept the Business Manager Reports. CCC Report: Roger expressed thanks and appreciation for the improvements to kitchen and heating system. Tuition increase for 2014 and increase in advertising to fill staffing vacancies. There is one vacancy on the CCC Board. A MOTION was made and carried to accept the CCC report and 2014 proposed budget. Elections: Pastor Bruce indicated that the current board/council structure is being reviewed along with the Constitution/By-Law update. Vice President – Gary Euren Elders – Greg Brockberg and Steve Busse Trustees – Gary Bloom, Shayne Wright and Dennis Miller Stewardship – Diane Bendickson, Robin Bjerken and Phil Hayes Endowment Committee – Bill Lymburner and Norm Eidenschink A MOTION was made and carried to accept these individuals to the boards and committees. Heating System Report: Dennis Miller and Paul Beltz provided an update. Two boilers are installed with the third to be done soon; replacement of a return pipe; contact regularly with Peterson Mechanical; all parts are in and just waiting for the labor to finish; Peterson Mechanical will monitor system for the first year and then we will be responsible. Cindy Sprouls is working with insurance company for possible coverage for past furnace issues. Pastor Bruce shared a letter and gift received from the family of Jan Stuverud. Glory to God Report: Pastor Bruce indicated that actual expenses will come in $10-12,000 less than commitments. More will be known in the next year as the final commitments and expenses are received. Balcony railing and CCC playground fence are the only remaining items to complete. Staffing Options and Recommendation: Two time-frames: short-term to assist Pastor Bruce immediately and long-term to determine staffing and responsibilities beyond the next year or two. Due to the graduating numbers from the seminary, it is not likely that a second pastor would be available for us. Calling from the field would require additional time and provide a financial challenge as the MN North District has lower salary guidelines. Council and the Board of Elders recommend that a call be extended to Mark Noennig due to his experience and immediate availability to assist Pastor Bruce. This allows time to evaluate the needs and roles for future staffing.

Steward Builders

A newsletter to help you grow as a steward.

The purpose of this newsletter is to share God’s Word so that our members will better understand who we are to be and what we are to do in the light of the Scriptures. It is our hope that this monthly publication will help you grow in your relationship with the Lord and as a Christian steward. Remember Whose Child You Are The story is told of a boy who was leaving home for college. His father had included him in the morning prayer at the breakfast table, asking God to protect him and to grant him success in the career which he was undertaking. Rising from the table, the young man expected to receive some final bit of advice and instruction from his father. But he was surprised when, after a moment’s silence, the older man merely placed his hand on his shoulder, looked at him kindly, and said: My boy, remember whose son you are.” Need he have said more than that? We Christians, too, are children of a Father—temporarily away from the our Father’s house. “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God” (1 John 3:1) exclaims the apostle of John. Yes, sons and daughters of God—through Christ! In his letters to us, the Holy Scriptures, how often has our heavenly Father admonished us to remember whose children we are! “For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8). And the Savior Himself has told us: “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father Who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

How have we been behaving “away from home,” away from our Father house? Have we been reflecting credit upon our family name—“children of God”? As a rule, men are extremely careful to protect the good name of their family. The Smith children are eager to protect the good name of the Smith parents, and the Smith parents are eager to protect the good name of the Smith children. A deep sense of family loyalty and family pride makes them want to do those things only which will reflect upon the name of Smith. In the measure in which we remember from day to day—in our home, in our shop, and at our play—that we are “the children of God,” in that measure we shall seek to reflect credit upon the name of Him whom we call “Father.”

If we are the children of God by faith in Christ, it is inevitable that we shall share in some of the family traits which are common to all His children—love, mercy, forbearance, righteousness, honesty, faithfulness. Just as the children of earthly parents frequently “take after their father,” so those who have come to faith in Christ Jesus are

expected to “take after” their heavenly Father. From day to day, through the power of His Holy Spirit, they are to become more and more like Him—more loving, more patient, more kindly, more honest, more truthful, more righteous. Yes, it will pay us to remember whose children we are!

Herman W. Gockel On the Lighter Side One Sunday, shortly after receiving my learner’s permit, I drove my parents to church. After a long, rough ride, we reached our destination. I stopped at the front doors to drop my mother off, and when she got out of the car, she said, “Thank you.” “Any time!” I replied. As my mother slammed the door shut, I heard her call out, “I wasn’t speaking to you. I was talking to God.”

Doing God's Perfect Will In Romans 12:1 the Apostle Paul tells us "…to present [our] bodies as a living sacrifice…” Christ sacrificed Himself for our sins, and just as He rose from the dead, so we Christians shall never die. We are living sacrifices who serve others in response to the grace that has been shown to us. We seek opportunities to be useful and to be God's representatives here on earth. In 2 Corinthians 5:20, Paul calls us “ambassadors for Christ, God making His appeal through us.” We do not have to have extraordinary abilities or spheres of influence, because we know that God is not limited by our flaws or by circumstances. We just need to make ourselves available, because God has chosen to make His appeal through us. By looking at Christian stewards, others see what Christ is like. Christ spent His years of ministry on earth as a servant. People listened to Him because they saw that His words were

backed up by His deeds. God asks that we be faithful in service and promises that, through His Word, He will be “equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17). God has created and redeemed us, and, through Word and Sacrament, His Holy Spirit continues His work of sanctification in us. The more aware we are of God's great love and mercy, the more we desire to serve Him.

Responsible and Cheerful Giving There are many reasons to give, the first and foremost one being that God asks us to do it. He is looking for the committed, humble steward who gives in joyful response for all that he has received. Our giving has a side benefit, and that is one of encouragement to others to give. "…for I know your readiness…and your zeal has stirred up most of them" (2 Corinthians 9:2). When others see our cheerful, generous giving and the blessings God gives us, they will be, in Paul’s words, “stirred up” themselves. Needs versus Wants The Lord wants us to be content when our basic needs are met. “If we have food and clothing, with these we will be content” (1 Timothy 6:8). Needs are the basic necessities of life—food, clothing, and shelter. Wants are anything in excess of needs. The Lord may allow us to have our wants, but He has not promised to provide all of them.

Blessings on your stewardship journey!
