In this program there will be a presentation on “Japanese College Students Life” by Mr. Takafumi Morikami & Mr. Hazuki Mori of Nagoya University of Commerce & Business, presently working as interns at Nihongo Center. And you will enjoy together ORIGAMI Workshop. It is Paper art workshop. You can learn lots of thing in this program in ORIGRAMI workshop. Please Do attend and enjoy this Cultural program plus you can ask your question regarding college life in Japan from them. In this program Nasukawa sensei and a Senior India Student in Fukuoka gave information to the audience about the present scenario of Japanese language in Indian market. They talked about scope & demand of Japanese language in comparison to other languages. Why Japanese companies switch from China to southern Asia. Big Japanese companies like Honda, Panasonic, Sony, Suzuki, Toyota, and Honda, have manufacturing facilities in India and with the growth of the Indian economy, India is a big market for Japanese firms. Japanese firms in fact, were few of the first firms to invest in India. In the audience the students said that today they got lot of information about Japanese Language demand in India. They were encouraged by this program and very happy to attend this program. Under Free Distribution of Japanese books program, students picked up rarely available Japanese books of their choice and thanked Nihongo Center for this. They looked quite happy.

Invitation: “India- Japan Education Summit 2015” Program on 2nd Feb. 2015 (Mon.) at Hotel LE Meridien

This Summit was organized to promote Japanese language learning in Tokyo by The University of Tokyo, Japan. This event

was managed by The University of Tokyo India Office .The venue was at Hotel LE MERIDIEN, Windsor Place, New Delhi.

The idea of this summit was to provide the Indian students and educators with up-to-date and correct information about

Japanese higher education and research by participating institutions and organizations in order to help the students

select an appropriate school and achieve their academic pursuits, thereby promoting study in Japan. On that day there

were various counters of the respective language schools and colleges from Japan. Visitors were mostly students from

Institutes and schools those interested to learn Japanese language in Japan. In this program 15 leading universities of

Japan participated with their representatives. The students got information on opportunities for Higher Study in Japan,

Careers in Japanese Companies, Internships and more. In one of the halls in the Hotel a Robotics Workshop was

organized, many visitors to this summit participated in a Robotic competition and made Robots in the time limit and

enjoy the workshop. In this program a Short film on Japanese Bullet Train Technology was shown. A Big number of

audience attended this and appreciated the film.

How Japanese People Celebrate New Year in Japan

New Year is the biggest celebration in Japan. On 1st, 2nd & 3rd January no one works. Everyone is busy incelebrating New Year in their own ways. On 31st December, people clean their houses, cook special Japanesefood for the New Year and enjoy eating them.Mostly Japanese people eat Toshi Koshi Soba (Soba noodles) on 31st December night because they don’thave time to cook because they are busy preparing for the New Year celebration. Also Toshi Koshi Soba hasmeaning of wishing a long life as the noodle is long shaped.Kadomatsu is decorative pine branches, placed at the entrance of a house. People eat Rice Cakes on theoccasion of New Year, and Ozoni (a special soup with rice cake) these are an example of typical New Yeardishes. People also eat Osechi (special preparation for New Year, which they prepare by 31st Dec., as it takeslot of time to cook and it does not spoil for a few days), with Otoso (a special Japanese wine for New Yearonly). Otoshidama (special bonus to children) is a real attraction for Japanese children. Earlier Hanetsuki(traditional Japanese Badminton) was played by Japanese girls only on New Years. During this program, rarelyused Japanese words were introduced to the audience, like Hagoita it is a traditional Japanese woodenbadminton racket with an artistic design. Takoage is Japanese flying kite for the boys. Nengajyo is a New Yearcard in which Japanese people write from top to bottom and right to left in traditional way. These cards arevery popular in Japan.“Shinen Omedeto Gozaimasu or “Akemashite Omedeto Gozaimasu” means Happy New Year.

Briefing on Main Festivals & Events of Japan

Oshogatsu (New Year Celebration): It is the most important festive occasion in Japan. Businesses are closed from the endof December till 3

rdJanuary. Various kinds of special dishes are served during Oshogatsu like osechi ryori, otoso (sweetened rice

wine) and ozoni (a soup with mocha).Hinamatsuri (Doll festival for girls) is held on 3

rdMarch. Girls decorate home with beautiful dolls.

Kodomo no hi (Children’s day) is held on 5th May. Banners shaped like carp, one for each male living in the house are flownin people’s garden.Shichi-go-san (Seven-five-three) falls on 15th November when girls aged 3 & 7 and boys aged 5 are taken to a local shrineor temple to pray for good health.Tanabata (Star festival) falls on 7th July. The story is that two lovers represented by two stars separated by the MilkyWay, are allowed to meet each other on this night. During Tanabata, people write their wishes on strips of paper and tie themto Bamboo branches.Obon: It takes place in mid-August. It is a common belief that on the 13th of the month, the spirits of the ancestors come homefor 3 days.
