Tips: Split your donations in Ramadhan to distribute equally to above organisations.Set up a Standing Order for the Masjid using the details below.

WHEN IS EID?Ramadhan, Eid and all Islamic months begin when either the crescent (hilal) is sighted after 29 days of a month or 30 days are completed if sighting is not reported.

The criteria set out by Wifaqul Ulama is summarised as follows: • Effort will be made to sight the

moon locally at the end of the 29th day after Maghrib.

• Help, can be taken from astrono-my, but the judgement will never be dependent upon them.

• If the moon is not sighted in the U.K. then we will accept the sighting of another country to the East of UK or Morocco if the sighting information is correct, reliable and verified.

• If the skies are clear, the testimo-ny of large group will be neces-sary. If not, then the testimony of one or two witnesses will suffice.

• If there is no possibility of sight-ing the Moon in the UK (i.e. the Moon is not on the horizon), we will still exhaust all efforts in trying to sight the Moon. On such occasion, the testimony of a large group will be necessary.

• If moon is not sighted according to above criteria, then 30 days will be completed for that Month.

WHAT TIME DOES SUHOOR END? There are also other valid methods of determining the time for Imsaak during this period. But those methods are not logical nor practically sustainable, hence not adopted in UK Masajid. On the other hand, the research of some scholars concludes that Isha time does indeed occur throughout the whole year. Based on this opinion, several UK Masajid publish a later time for Imsaak (see Unified Prayer Timetable). However, this opin-ion is relatively new and satisfactory evidence has not been forthcoming. This is why it would not be correct – in our view - to divert from the established opinion of 18 degrees. We there-fore advise caution is this matter as it effects the fundamental obligation of fasting. Please email [email protected] for further informa-tion on the subject.

According to centuries-old research of Ulama and scientists, Isha time begins and ends when the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon. This is followed in majority of the Muslim world. Based on that, every year be-tween May 22nd and July 21st, Isha time is non-existent in the UK. Scien-tists call this phenomenon ‘Persistent Twilight’. During this time, we have no choice but to observe Imsaak (finish suhoor) at 1:20, as that is the time when night ended on 21st May.
