OpportunityAccording to U.S. Census data (July 2010), 1 in 7 Americans identifies asHispanic. By 2050, 1 in 4 Americans will be Hispanic. Hispanics continueto be the largest U.S. ethnic group at 44.3 million and account for almost15% of the U.S. total population. Overall purchasing power of Hispanicsis expected to reach more that $1 trillion by 2011.

The Internet is a mainstream medium among US Hispanics. In 2010, 29.6million Hispanics will go online at least once a month. By 2014, 39.2million Hispanics will be online, representing 70% of this population.

This online population is young and thriving: the majority are native born,who speak—and read—English proficiently. Yet, even as second- andthird-generation citizens, they still identify with their parents’ nativecountry. They also frequently use social media, message boards andsports sites. They check advertisers’ Spanish-language sites—and findmany of them wanting for more.

According to the eMarketer study, growth within this population—bothonline and offline—will come from native-born Hispanics rather thanimmigrants. This group of young Latinos is bilingual and proud of itsHispanic origins. 79% of US Hispanic Internet users are bicultural and themajority of these bicultural Latinos are online every day.

In her book, Best Careers for Bilingual Latinos, Graciela Kenig states thatthe Latino community will add 1.7 million people to its population everyyear. This trend is creating a tremendous demand for bilingual job seekersfluent in Spanish and English.
