WORKSHOPS/CONFERENCES/EVENTS

1. Influenza Vaccination Program 2019

NH 2019 TARGET 92 % OF STAFF VACCINATED! The Influenza Vaccination Program to protect our community and ourselves has commenced! Staff percentages are set at 92% this year.

The program applies to ALL staff who work a day from 15th April – 2nd August 2019. When the Flu Season is declared ALL unvaccinated staff will need to wear a mask when within 1 metre of patients. In specialist clinics, there will be a separate vaccination nurse in a procedure room to minimise disruption to clinic workflows. An Immuniser will be arranged to attend your team/ program / division meeting to enable easier access for all staff. Flu vaccination is still available to those staff wishing to have it, please contact Staff Health Clinic on ext. 58139. To see up to date surveillance data in regards to influenza cases, please see http://www.vidrl.org.au/surveillance/influenza-surveillance/ If you have received the 2019 influenza vaccination elsewhere, please complete and submit a declaration form to Staff health clinic at [email protected] If you are vaccinated at another health service or through your GP PLEASE submit a declaration form to Staff health clinic at [email protected].

We hope these reviews will encourage debate, some empathy and sympathy, and help prevent such issues happening again. VASM encourages you to include the Case Note Reviews in training programs for junior staff and make available the important lessons in this publication to all relevant health care professionals. Education Events VASM and the Collaborating Hospitals Audit of Surgical Mortality (CHASM) of New South Wales are coming together to deliver an interactive and informative workshop on completing second-line assessments with a special focus on surgical oncology and futility.

NH UPDATES

1. Northern Hospital Epping - New Ground Floor Ward Names As you will be aware, Northern Hospital is moving towards a simpler and clearer wayfinding strategy. The new wayfinding strategy aims to eliminate the confusion with ward, area, unit and outpatient clinic names. Central to the new wayfinding is changing inpatient units to “wards” and changing from an alphabetical to a numerical name system - i.e. Wards 1 to 21 in a logical order from the main entrance. In March and April this year, all units on level 1 were renamed as wards in numerical order to coincide with the opening of the new Ward 17 (ICU). Outpatient clinics were also renamed as specialist clinics. The next changes to be implemented on Monday, 1 July 2019 are: New Ward Name Previous Name

Ward 1 (Day Oncology) Day Oncology Unit

Ward 2 Children’s Ward

Ward 3 Unit A

Ward 4 Unit B

Ward 5 Unit D

Ward 6 Unit G

Ward 7 NPU 1

Ward 8 NPU 2

New directional signage will be installed by Monday, 1 July 2019 and changes to iPM, Roster On, and other systems will coincide with the ward and clinic name changes. Thank you for your understanding during the changeover. Jane Poxon CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

3. SGLT2 inhibitors WARNING!

SGLT2 inhibitors present a problem peri-operatively as they can cause euglycaemic diabetic ketoacidosis (euDKA) which requires close HDU/ICU monitoring if not stopped three (3) days before surgery. Please see attached recommendations from ANZCA. The Anaesthetics Department is in the process of disseminating information to theatre booking staff as well as day of surgery booking. Dr Amanda Baric is performing an audit of patients presenting to TNH and BHS who are currently taking these medications to determine the extent of the problem. The Endocrinology Department will be presenting a PowerPoint presentation to the Anaesthetic Department with regards to the best way of managing these patients. Although there are guidelines an ELECTIVE procedures with regards to the cessation of SGLT2 inhibitors, including cut-off values if these haven't been ceased, there is no clear evidence as to the best way of managing these patients in the EMERGENCY setting, when the inhibitors haven't been ceased. The Anaesthetics Department is also in the process of implementing a Perioperative Medicine Special Interest Group (interested parties should speak with DARREN LOWEN) looking into the management of patients currently taking a SGLT2 inhibitor in the emergency setting. Draft formalised guidelines will be disseminated to other areas of the hospital for feedback and an education campaign will follow. Alert-DKA-and-oral-hypoglycaemics-20180215.pdf

4. SHORT COURSE OXYCODONE COMING TO NORTHERN HEALTH

Mundipharma launches Australia’s only short-course oxycodone pack for short term management of post-operative pain because:

of the risks on long-term use of opioids

the majority of patients do not use all the medications in the packet (see attached) Short course Oxycodone.pdf
