On April 19, more than 300 peo-ple crowded the MontgomeryHigh School Commons for the In-ternational Clubs annualfundraising event, InternationalNight.

International Night is theclubs last fundraiser of the year,where MHS students and teach-ers perform cultural talents, fol-lowed by a potluck internationalbuffet.

The international buffet con-sists of a variety of cultural dish-es, donated by the families that at-tend the event each year. Thisyear, there were more than 50 dif-ferent foods from around theglobe, including Indian vegetablepulao, Indian samosas, vegetablefried rice and sushi.

I have been involved with thisevent for the 16 years I have runit, said Susanne Asral, advisor ofthe International Club and Span-ish teacher at MHS. Im incharge of helping the students or-

ganize the event, from recruitingtalented performers to preparingdecorations and advertising.

Asral essentially oversees theevent, leaving the details in thehands of students.

Montgomery EMS will be hold-ing its annual OpenHouse/Health Fair on Sunday,May 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.MEMS is located at 8 HarlingenRoad in Belle Mead.

The Montgomery Police De-partment will be offering a KidPrints ID Cards. At 10:30 a.m.,members of Montgomery Volun-teer Fire No. 2 and MontgomeryEMS will demonstrate passenger

extrication from a motor vehiclecrash."

Throughout the event, theMontgomery Health Department,together with the Somerset-Mor-ris Regional Chronic Disease

Coalition, will provide informa-tion about emergency prepared-ness and offer skin cancer screen-ing. Montgomery EMS will giveblood pressure screenings andambulance tours. Montgomeryvolunteer fire No. 1 will be offer-ing fire truck tours.

The University Medical Centerof Princeton will provide bodymass index testing and PrincetonHealth and Wellness will offer

functional movement testing.There will also be face painting

for the kids and MontgomeryMoms will hold a bake sale.

POLICE REPORTsThis information was provid-

ed by the Montgomery TownshipPolice Department.

On April 21 at 4:56 p.m., Mont-gomery Police responded toRoute 206 north of GriggstownRoad for a motor vehicle crash in-volving a motorcycle. A 52-year-old male was traveling south-bound on Route 206 on a 1979Harley Davidson Sportster whenhe lost control and crashed. Awitness reported that he was ap-proaching a line of vehicles thatwas stopping for the traffic signal

at Griggstown Road when heskidded and lost control of themotorcycle. The man was treatedat the scene by Montgomery EMS

and Somerset MICU before beingairlifted to Robert Wood JohnsonHospital in New Brunswickwhere he was listed in criticalcondition.

No other vehicles were in-volved in the crash.

Route 206 was closed to trafficbetween Griggstown Road andPike Run Road for approximately2 1/2 hours while police conduct-ed an investigation.

On April 24, the man died atthe hospital as a result of his in-

juries.

On April 13 at 4:32 p.m., a 54-year-old female was driving her2011 Mercedes 350 northbound onThe Great Road when a 2011

Honda CRV being driven by an81-year-old male crossed over thedouble yellow lines and collidedwith her vehicle. MontgomeryTownship Emergency MedicalServices Fire Companies No. 1and No. 2 and Mercer CountyParamedics responded to thescene and had to extricate the 81-year-old male, who was trappedin his vehicle. The Great Road re-mained closed for about an hour.The 54-year-old female was trans-ported to University MedicalCenter at Princeton with anankle injury. The man was taken

to Helen Fuld Medical Center inTrenton with chest and abdomeninjuries. He was charged with

Day and Labor Day weekends

are crucial for the Jersey Shore,

which, no matter what town you live

in, has a vital impact on the Garden

States economy. And while beautiful

weather is causing excitement for

beach season to be high, beach towns

are also experiencing high anxiety as

the big first weekend looms less than

three weeks away.

Six months removed from the devas-

tation caused by Hurricane Sandy,

Shore towns are still fighting to fully

recover. Beach remediation is going on

in full force in Ocean City, as we speak.

While the Boardwalk is alive and well,and parts of the beach are open to the

public, other parts are still under

heavy construction.

Further north, towns such as Sea-

side Heights, Sandy Hook, Point Pleas-

ant and Sea Bright are all scrambling

to get as much done as possible before

the season opens.What effect this will have on the suc-

cess, or failure, of the local economy

wont be known until the end of sum-

mer, and might not be felt in full until

the winter holiday shopping season.

In Atlantic City, a purchase deal be-

tween PokerStars and the Atlantic

Club casino put a damper on hopes, at

least temporarily. PokerStars, a lead-ing company in online poker and other

gambling, had been trying to buy the

casino since the fall, but final attempts

to do so fell through.

Now, many of the approximately

1,800 workers at the casino which re-

ported a $43 million net loss in 2012

could be out of a job.

Gov. Christie believes the states

newest offering of online gambling,

which was passed in February, could

become a $1.2 billion industry, but that

wont happen for a few years yet, for

sure.

So what can be done in the mean-

time?

If youre Atlantic City, keep trying to

find a buyer for the Atlantic Club, and

expand marketing efforts to bring

more gamblers to the coast.

If youre a Shore town, welcome vis-

itors with open arms, and use these

last two weeks of preparation to workas hard as possible.

If youre a New Jersey resident, stay

local this summer and spend money at

our Shore towns.

Every little bit will help us all in the

long run.

tempt and subsequently postedthe bail in full. She was releasedand cited for failure to make re-pairs and is scheduled to appear

in Montgomery Township Mu-nicipal Court.

On April 21 at 9:53 a.m., a 25-

year-old female was stopped byMontgomery Police on Rt. 206after a random registration in-quiry on her vehicle revealedthat her New Jersey drivers li-cense was suspended.

A warrant check revealed thatshe had an active ACS warrant inthe amount of $250 originating inCamden. She was placed underarrest for contempt and was sub-sequently released on her own re-cognizance by Camden Munici-

pal Court and given a futurecourt date in Camden. She isscheduled to appear in Mont-gomery Municipal Court.

During the event, the Interna-tional Club continued its efforts toraise funds to benefit the

Oloosirkon School in Nairobi,Kenya, by selling homemadebracelets.

Proceeds from the sales, alongwith donations made by the atten-dees, will be donated to the schoolnext month.

The club raised $2,300 at theevent.

The proceeds will go to the In-ternational Club Scholarship

Fund, which provides monetarygifts to students in support oftheir cultural aspirations.

The Montgomery TownshipCommittee hired Omni Environ-mental, a Princeton-based con-sulting firm, to conduct an anti-degradation study at two smallstreams leading into the MillstoneRiver, as well as the river itself,where its wastewater plants dis-charge wastewater.

Last year, Montgomery enteredinto the Somerset County Waste-water Management Plan, which

incorporated changes to the town-ship's sewer service areas. In theWMP, the county also made rec-

ommendations, including consoli-dating the Oxbridge WTP and the

Riverside WTP into the PikeBrook WTP.

To do so, state law requires thetownship to conduct an anti-degradation study to ensure thequality of water isnt degraded inthe Millstone River from the dis-charge from all the wastewatertreatment plants.

Its required by the NJDEP,said Donato Nieman, townshipadministrator. You have to testthe water to find dissolve oxygen

levels and the like, and then youhave to provide evidence that thedischarge that youre putting in

will not have a negative effect onthe body of water into which

were discharging [streams andMillstone River].

This is the next step in the re-quirements listed under the Som-erset County WMP, Nieman said.

"Once that's done, we canamend the WMP, should it be suc-cessful, and then do a preliminarydesign to see how we get fromhere to there, he said.

If the streams and MillstoneRiver don't meet the anti-degrada-tion criteria, there is no need for

Omni to work on the WMPamendment and preliminary de-sign.

EMS responds to

136 calls in AprilFor April, Montgomery EMSresponded to 136 calls. It covered100 percent of primary calls and100 percent of backup calls (abackup call is when a second orthird 9-1-1 emergency happensduring our first call requiring asecond or third ambulance andcrew to respond). It also respond-ed to three mutual aid calls two toPrinceton Township and one to

Hillsborough.In April, it required no mutualaid assistance from other agen-cies. Of the calls, 40.1 percent re-quired Advanced Life Support.The top three call types for themonth were general sickness,motor vehicle accident and car-diac events.

In April, Montgomery EMSmembers volunteered 3,188 hours

of service to the community.Montgomery EMS is pleased to

welcome EMT Vivek Satyasi toour ranks. It also would like tocongratulate Patricia Camp, AnjuDang, Taylore Fritzinger, MeghaJoshi and Roshi Lulla in complet-ing the EMT training class, andwelcome new drivers AkshayChanillo, Berna Gerdes, andVivek Joshi.

Montgomery EMS is an all-vol-unteer organization that providesbasic life support 24 hours a day,365 days a year.
