packagingAll our herbs, spices, and teas are sealed in non-gas-permeable bags to preserve freshness, aroma, and potency. 95% of our powdered materials are sealed in FDA-approved foil bags. Oils are bottled in glass: cobalt blue bottles or amber boston rounds. Quantities ordered as 25 pounds or more of any one item may be packed into a single 25-pound unit.

oilsEssential Oils: All our essential oils are pure and 100% natural, undiluted with alcohol or any other substance. Essential oils are obtained through an expression, extraction, and/or a distillation of the plant’s volatile oils. Please use oils with caution, they are extremely concentrated.Fragrance Oils: Fragrances are generally blends of synthetic oils. They are formulated for aromatic purposes only and are NOT for consumption.Carrier Oils: These replenishing, plant-derived oils can be externally applied to the body to moisturize skin improve overall tone and texture. They are NOT designed for consumption.

teasBlack Tea: Black tea is the most oxidized of all the teas, providing its deep color, rich flavor and high caffeine content. Oolong Tea: A traditional Chinese tea with medium oxidation, Oolong’s color and flavor fall between those of black and green tea.Green Tea: Green tea is processed just after plucking, which minimizes oxidation and delivers a pale green color and distinct earthy flavor. White Tea: Derived from the young tea plant buds, white tea is the least processed giving it light color, sweet flavor and plenty of antioxidants.Herbals: These soothing caffeine-free teas are made from various blends of flowers, roots, fruits, leaves or seeds, and are often used for medicinal purposes.Decaffeinated Tea Processes: Our teas are decaffeinated using an organic carbon dioxide process, which safely draws out just the caffeine from the leaves. This process preserves the tea’s natural flavors and benefits better than any other method.

organically grownOrganic is the method of growing and processing that helps protect—not deplete—our natural resources. Organic foods are grown on land that has been free from the use of synthetic fertilizers, growth regulators, insecticides or herbicides for at least 3 years. By composting, crop rotation, and inter-planting to control weeds and pests, organic farming replenishes the soil, and sustains the health of our planet.

kosher certificationMost of our products are kosher certified by Earth Kosher. If you are inter-ested in receiving a list of the products currently certified, please contact us.

irradiationAll our products are free from irradiation.

catalog glossaryCut & Sifted: These herbs are collected, dried and sifted which retains only the desired part of the plant and produces a relatively fine consistency that’s ready for use. Wild Crafted: Wild crafted herbs are collected in their wild habitat, while leaving enough plant material so as to not compromise the abundance of the mother plant.Certified Organic: Certification is your guarantee that the product has been grown and processed according to strict guidelines established in the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990. Before a product can be labeled Certified Organic, farmers and processors must meet the following requirements:

* No harmful chemicals have been applied to the land for at least three years.

* Farmers and processors pass yearly inspections by an independent certifying agency.

* Farmers and processors keep detailed records of operations.

* Farmers maintain a written organic management plan. (We will provide a copy of certification papers upon your request.)

Lycci Berry Lycium chinenseLycci berry, also known as Goji, Chinese Matrimony-vine, or Wolfberry, is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a blood purifier, to preserve vision, and to support kidney and liver function. Another notable use of this fruit is to increase testosterone levels and enhance sexual performance in men, the effectiveness of which has been demonstrated in clinical studies. In fact, botanist James A. Duke has described lycci berry as being able to “make the young wolf out of the old man.” Lycci also appears to help lower cholesterol and maintain prostate health, possibly due to the presence of beta-sitosterol. Lycci berry is also an excellent source of beta-carotene, niacin, and vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid.

The berries, which taste similar to raisins, may be eaten raw or added to salads, stews, rice dishes, and desserts. Lycci berry may also be prepared as a tea.

Genmaicha TeaGenmai cha tea roughly translates to mean “dark, raw rice tea,” which is why it is some-times referred to as brown rice tea. However, this blend actually combines the sweet earthiness of green tea with roasted brown rice, which yields a rich, nutty flavor. Aside from exceptional flavor, genmai cha provides an additional fun factor. Since some of the rice grains tend to pop while being roasted, it has earned the nickname of “popcorn” tea. As many tea connoisseurs will attest, genmai cha tea does indeed impart a smoky aroma and taste similar to popcorn, but without the added calories or even extra caffeine from ordinary tea.

While genmai cha tea is a perfect marriage of flavors, it was born of scarcity. In fact, the Japanese peasantry originally crafted the blend to save on the high cost of whole tea. Today, all members of society now embrace the sweet mellowness of genmai cha tea. We know you’ll enjoy the people’s tea of Japan too.

Oregano Origanum vulgare (an essential oil)Oregano, a staple of Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, is also highly valued for its spicy scent. As such, oregano essential oil is a common ingredient in many cosmetics and perfumes. It is also of medicinal value due to possessing antiseptic and antiviral properties--benefits first recognized by Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine. Today, oregano essential oil is diluted and applied topi-cally to help prevent infection and to ease symptoms of muscle pain, rheumatism, and arthritis.

herb profile: GINGERan exerpt from our Oct 09 newsletter

name: Ginger (Zingiber officinale) Perennial family: Zingiberaceae common names: Ginger, Ginger root, Root Ginger, Jamaica Ginger range: Native to Asia, now widely cultivated in India, Africa, and throughout the Caribbean islands. parts used: Rhizome Preparations: Tea and tinctures prepared from the freshly grated root, and encapsulation of the dried, powdered root.

history: Ginger is one of the most widely used and well-documented medici-nal herbs known. While it is prominently featured in Traditional Chinese Medicine, ginger has been used extensively throughout most of the world for centuries.

The pungent flavor and aroma of ginger is due to the presence of gingerols and shogaols, volatile oils that possess potent antibacterial and analgesic properties. A hot compress of the freshly grated root is very effective for treat-ing muscle aches due to the presence of capsaicin. When taken internally, the primary actions of ginger is to increase salivation, enhance blood circulation, and stimulate digestion in the gastrointestinal tract. In fact, ginger is well known to improve nausea with equal or greater efficacy when compared to conventional medications, but without negative side effects. It is also safe to use during pregnancy to deter morning sickness. Ginger is also an excellent remedy for seasickness, as well as nausea associated with chemotherapy. Zingerone, another volatile oil found in the root, has been used successfully to treat a deadly form of diarrhea produced by E. coli that frequently occurs in infants in developing counties.

LAVENdER: much more than a cure for the bluesan exerpt from our Aug 09 newsletter Of all the simples in the botanical kingdom, few hold such a place of reverence in the gardens and hearts of herbal enthusiasts as lavender. It’s graceful beauty, peppery fragrance, and potent therapeutic properties have made this herb a staple in the kitchen, bath, and medicine cabinet. In fact, lavender has been used for centuries to lift mood, induce sleep, and to relieve anxiety and mild depression. But, did you also know that lavender helps to clear stubborn acne, reduce arthritis pain, heal burns, and repel insects?

Lavender (Lavandula spp.) is a Mediterranean native that shares its genus with nearly 40 other species belonging to the mint family. There is extraor-dinary variety among species and cultivars in terms of hardiness, size, and the color of blooms. In fact, the flower spikes, which appear in full bloom in mid-summer, may be white, pink, bluish purple, or the distinctive hue named in honor of this herb—lavender.

The flowers are highly aromatic due to a high concentration of linalool, a terpene alcohol that lends the blooms a floral, yet spicy fragrance. The telltale scent is well known to those who practice the art of aromatherapy, and the dried flowers and essential oil are valued for the ability to relieve stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and headaches. The flowers are also a traditional ingredient in natural bath and beauty products, including soap, bath sachets, creams, lotions, shampoo, and tonics for hair and skin. In fact,

lavender’s reputation for cleansing the body and spirit appears to live up to its name, which is derived from the Latin lavare, meaning, “to wash.” This character reference was even spun into an advertising campaign launched years ago for Yardley Lavender Soap: The soap that’s kept women in hot water for 200 years—and they’ve loved every minute.

Of course, the use of the flowers and essential oil is not reserved for the home herbalist. In fact, lavender is grown on a commercial scale for the purpose of supplying the perfume industry. The majority of oil is obtained from L. vera, a variety that thrives in the arid and rocky mountainous regions of the Mediterranean. French lavender probably comes in second among commercial crops. However, English lavender is the real prize when it comes to yielding the best fragrance, which explains why the oil obtained from this species has a market value an average of ten times greater than that of other varieties.

Lavender is also celebrated as a medicinal herb, where its uses are many and well documented. In particular, lavender oil is renowned for effectively treating burns, including sunburn. This attribute was made famous in the early 1900s by René-Maurice Gattefossé, a chemist who accidentally set himself aflame while working in the laboratory of the cosmetics company owned by his family. After extinguishing the flames by rolling on the ground outside, he returned to the lab and plunged his burned hands into the liquid he knew would bring relief—a vat of lavender oil. He was not only rewarded with the immediate cessation of pain, but the burns healed very quickly and without scarring. The name Gattefossé is still significant since the company continues to produce lipids and botanical extracts in the south of France today. René-Maurice, in particular, is remembered because he passionately promoted his theory that botanical oils have a psychologi-cal impact on the body, as he learned first-hand that fateful day in the lab. Of this aspect, he wrote, “... essential oils possess anti-toxic and antiviral properties, have a powerful vitalizing action, and undeniable healing power and extensive therapeutic properties.” Thus, he not only influenced the medical mindset of his time, but also earned the distinction of being dubbed the Father of Aromatherapy.

Aromatherapists also recommend inhalation therapy with lavender essen-tial oil to relieve headache, break up congestion association with respiratory disorders, reduce anxiety, stimulate mental alertness, and to calm vari-ous nervous conditions. In fact, formulations made from the flowers are approved by the Commission E and often prescribed in European coun-tries for these and other maladies. Aromatherapists have also long known that lavender acts on the nervous system, thereby promoting and enhanc-ing the quality of sleep, a mechanism supported by several scientific studies. Modern science notwithstanding, however, weary mothers have sewn the flowers into dream pillows to help lull their fitful babes to sleep for centu-ries. As far as lavender’s restorative properties go, one only needs to turn to literature for anecdotal evidence.

For instance, the 19th century Scottish poet and dramatist, Joanna Baillie, made this reference in The Election, published in 1798: “I’m sure if I had not put lavender on my pocket-handkerchief, like Mama, I should have fainted away.” The character, Polly, of Somerset’s A Day After the Fair laid a similar claim with, “Dead! Our best friend, our patron, dead! Where is my pocket-handkerchief, and my spirits of lavender?”

As our friend Gattefossé noted, the topical application of lavender oil appears to offer pain relief. When diluted with a carrier oil, such as jojoba or sweet almond, and applied during massage, lavender eases joint condi-tions, such as rheumatoid arthritis. The oil is increasingly finding its way into mainstream medicine as a means of regulating pain associated with

surgical procedures. This trend may stem from a recent study that found that follow-up inhalation therapy with lavender oil significantly reduced pain in patients having undergone surgical breast biopsy. Lavender is also helpful to treat a variety of skin conditions due to possessing antiviral, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. When combined with witch hazel, it makes an excellent remedy for stubborn acne. Many eczema suffer-ers also report finding relief from dryness and itching by massaging diluted lavender essential oil onto the skin. The oil is also formulated into salves and balms to treat wounds, cuts, and scrapes. It is also an effective insect repellent. As the herbalist Salmon wrote of lavender in 1710, “…it is good also against the bitings of serpents, mad-dogs and other venomous crea-ture, being given inwardly and applied poultice-wise to the parts wounded.” Hopefully, creatures of this sort will never visit your backyard, but if keep-ing mosquitoes and other biting insects at bay is your goal, then reach for some lavender essential oil.

HIBISCuS TEA: Food of the Goddess & defender of Your Health an exerpt from our July 09 newsletter Hibiscus represents a genus of more than 200 species of herbaceous plants and shrubs that are highly prized for their ornamental flowers. However, several species of hibiscus are also revered for their medicinal properties. In fact, several recent studies have shown that drinking hibiscus tea may help to lower blood pressure and serum cholesterol, deter the oxidation of free radicals, and prevent kidney disease associated with diabetic nephropathy.

Of particular interest to researchers is Hibiscus sabdariffa, dubbed as the Rosella plant by natives of the “land down under.” This Old World favorite stems from Eurasia and Africa, where the leaf is brewed and sold at wayside street markets and the fruit is incorporated into a fragrant beer-soft drink combination known as Shandy. Setting culinary kudos aside, what’s really stirring a buzz in the scientific community is the health-giving compounds tucked away in each bud and leaf, namely anthocyanins and protocatechuic acid.

Anthocyanins are bioflavonoids that lend the flowers and fruits of plants their vivid color. They are also considered phytonutrients. In fact, they pos-sess potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and play a role in inhibiting the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins, the “taxi cabs” of LDL cholesterol (the bad kind). Protocatechuic acid also provides antioxidant activity. Studies have shown that this substance induces apoptosis in leuke-mia cells, which means that the cancer cells are stimulated to self-destruct.

Paired together, these powerful agents really pack a one-two punch toward keeping you healthy. But, there are even more reasons that researchers are convinced that drinking hibiscus tea is a sweet idea.

DiabetesDiabetes is a metabolic disorder that is associated with numerous health complications, such as heart disease, neuropathy (nerve damage), blindness, and kidney failure. One of the primary reasons for this is a biochemical pro-cess known as glycation, the same mechanism that causes food to brown in the oven. Glycation is triggered when glucose molecules bind to proteins, creating sugar-damaged proteins known as advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs). Elevated levels of AGEs increase free radical levels and lower levels of nitric oxide, which leads to more damaged proteins and compromised arteries, nerves, and organs. These rogue sugar molecules also attach them-selves to LDL molecules on their way back to the liver for disposal, which prevents them from binding to receptor sites. This molecular hijacking causes the liver to mistakenly conclude that there’s a shortage of cholesterol, so it produces more.

In March and April of 2009, researchers at two different universities in Taiwan set out to examine the impact of hibiscus on these devastating diabetes-related effects. They not only found that the botanical sup-pressed AGE activity, but also increased the function of glutathione, a type of amino acid necessary for healthy cellular metabolism and immune response. In addition, the researchers found that hibiscus offered protection to vascular smooth muscle cells from oxidative stress. Nigerian research-ers at the Department of Biochemistry, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan experienced similar findings in a 2007 study. In fact, to quote the abstract published in Fundamental Clinical Pharmacology, “…Hibiscus sabdariffa could be useful in preventing the development of atherosclerosis and possible related cardiovascular pathologies associated with diabetes.”

High Blood PressureIn November of 2008, the results of a clinical trial that focused on the anti-hypertension effects of hibiscus were presented at the annual confer-

ence of the American Heart Association. The study, which was sponsored by the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, involved 65 adults between the ages of 30 and 70 years with mild hyper-tension or at borderline risk for hypertension. After six weeks, the tea-tipping subjects experienced a decrease in systolic blood pressure by 7.2 points, compared to 1.3 points in the placebo group. The researchers also found that those with the highest systolic blood pressure achieved the most impressive results, with an average decrease in systolic blood pressure of 13.2 points and a reduction in diastolic blood pressure of 6.4 points.

Earlier studies have reported similar results. For example, a 1999 study completed by the Shaheed Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Health Services in Iran noted an 11.2% reduction in systolic blood pres-sure and 10.7% diastolic pressure after only 12 days of treatment with hibiscus tea.

High CholesterolAs previously mentioned, oxidative stress and the excessive production of AGEs lowers nitric oxide levels. How is this related to cholesterol and its role in heart disease? Well, nitric oxide is nicknamed “endothelium-derived relaxing factor,” which basically means it is essential for healthy vascular function of specialized cells found in the inner lining of the arteries. In fact, nitric oxide is necessary to prevent atheriosclerosis, a condition character-ized by the accumulation of lipoproteins and platelets that form arterial plaque. Hibiscus has been shown to prevent premature nitric oxide deple-tion by inhibiting harmful AGEs.

Oxidized LDL is also involved in the formation of arterial plaque. A study published in the journal Chemico-Biological Interactions on May 15, 2009 reported that hibiscus decreased oxidized LDL as well as regulating CD36 gene expression, which is responsible for encoding a specialized protein to bind with oxidized LDL and other substances that contribute to platelet aggregation, such as thrombospondin.

Drink Up!Fortunately, you don’t have to read the soggy hibiscus tealeaves at the bot-tom of your cup to know that it overflows with good health. You don’t have to be a biochemist either. But it may help to remember the health benefits of hibiscus by committing to memory the ancient custom of presenting the flowers as an offering to Kali, the Tantric Goddess of time and change. According to Hindu belief, it was she who claimed victory in a war between the Gods and the demons of the self-awareness—fear, addiction, doubt, self-inflicted illness, etc. Perhaps by drawing on the attributes of hibiscus, the Mother Goddess was inspired to destroy the darkness that would keep her subjects from living in the light.

HOW TO: make your own herbal tincturesan exerpt from our Jun 09 newsletterTinctures are herbal extracts made without the necessity of a heat source, in contrast to teas or decoctions. Typically, tinctures are alcohol-based, using the highest proof vodka you can find. However, white vinegar or pharmaceutical grade glycerin can be used instead, if desired.

You will need: - Vodka - A 16-ounce wide mouth Mason jar with lid - Muslin (cheesecloth) - 4 ounces of fresh herbal material (leaves and flowers)

To Make: 1. Place the herbs into the bottom of the Mason jar. 2. Add enough vodka to fill the jar to about one-half inch below the rim. 3. Cap the jar and screw down the top. 4. Store the jar in a cool, dark place, away from heat and direct sunlight. 5. After six weeks, strain the contents of the jar through muslin or cheesecloth. Discard the herbal material. 6. Store the tincture in sterile, glass containers. Many herbalists like to use amber or cobalt bottles with droppers for this purpose.

Notes:100-proof vodka is ideal, but may be hard to obtain in certain areas. If that’s the case, use 80-proof, but please avoid 190-proof or 151 vodka (i.e., Everclear) since they can damage the liver. Also, if you wish to use organic vodka, two are sold under the brand names of Rain and Square One.

If stored properly, herbal tinctures will retain their medicinal properties for two years.
