The Montbeliardes origin is in the mountains of eastern France, and was officially registered as a pure breed in 1888. The tough climate of the mountains have shaped the Montbelirde as a very hardy cow, able to cope with the coldest and hottest weather conditions, and with an excellent adaptation to all sorts of rearing systems. THE PROCROSS SYSTEMThe only proven crossbreeding program

PROVEN

• The ProCross system is the only crossbreeding program that is backed with data from University trials as well as data from large commercial dairies. The University trials have been in two distinctly different climates, the hot and dry climate of the San Joaquin Valley of California and the cold and humid climates of Minnesota. Both trials have yielded the same results; the ProCross cow was definitely more profitable. Planned crossbreeding with ProCross is the fastest way to create efficiency and profit in the dairy business.

BEST INGREDIENTS

• A crossbreeding program is only as good as the breeds that make up the crossbred cow. A common mistake among dairymen is to use a two breed rotation or one or two inferior breeds thinking that they are making progress. ONLY THE BEST INGREDIENTS SHOULD BE USED! The ProCross system uses the Holstein, Viking Red and Montbeliarde breeds.

• The Viking Red has the highest production of all dairy cattle in the Ayrshire class which includes the Canadian Ayrshire, U.S. Ayrshire, German Angler, Aussie Red and the Norwegian Red. The December 2014 USDA release of the top Red bulls in the World showed that the Viking Reds held the first 12 places and 23 out of the top 25. They also held 41 out of the top 50. The Viking Red is also a world leader in calving ability and low somatic cell counts.

• The Montbeliarde breed has the highest production of all dairy cattle in the Simmental class which includes the Fleckvieh and the milking Simmentals. The Montbeliarde production for all cows in France is over 19,000 of milk with 3.93% fat and 3.55% protein with high forage, low input diet. The breed is known for its outstanding feet & legs, great body condition and outstanding longevity.

PLANNING

• All crossbreeding programs need a plan; they just don’t happen by themselves nor are they accidental. The ProCross system was and is the only proven crossbreeding program based on scientific facts. Most of our competitors are pushing a crossbreeding program designed to provide themselves with the most sales possible, not a program that is most beneficial for the dairymen.

• The ProCross system has been an active and continuing system for 17 years. The three breeds that make the ProCross cow complement each other for confirmation, production, components and health traits. Where one breed is weak, one of the others is strong. Most importantly, their gene pool is completely unrelated therefore, resulting in higher heterosis. That is why the ProCross cow can equal the Holstein in milk production with higher components. In the Minnesota trial the F1 Holstein x Montbeliarde cross out produced the Holstein, pound for pound.

HETEROSIS

• There have been countless scientific research projects on the effect of heterosis in livestock production. Time and again, crossbreeding has proven to be the single most effective way to increase productivity and especially the health traits of the commercial dairy cow (heterosis is the scientific name for the result of hybrid vigor that occurs with crossbreeding)

• Heterosis or hybrid vigor is the result of crossbreeding. Heterosis leads to performance advantages in crossbreds over the average of their straight bred parents. When used properly, as in a well planned crossbreeding program such as ProCross, heterosis can lead to huge improvements in performance and in efficiency, which leads to more profit for the dairy producer.

• The most unrelated breeds will have the highest impact from heterosis. Breeds that are related will have very little or no impact.

• The German Angler, the Norwegian Red and the American Jersey all carry some Holstein genes; therefore expect their hybrid vigor to be less explosive.

STAGES OF BENEFITS OF CROSSBREEDING

• There are three types of heterosis and how well a breeder harnesses these types will determine how much impact hybrid vigor will have on his bottom line.

• Individual heterosis (F1) directly affects several traits that are economically important. These improvements begin before the crossbred calf is born. The fertilized egg is more viable and resilient resulting in a higher pregnancy rate and less abortions. After birth, crossbred calves are more vigorous, resulting in more living and healthy calves. True, crossbred calves can have heavier birth weights, but are growthier and have improved calf survivability.

• Maternal heterosis (F2) is the effects that come from using crossbred cows. Those effects are very profound for all maternal health traits such as fertility, somatic cell count, longevity, and higher components. They also give birth to more vigorous calves.

• While this is impressive, the big impact comes from having a longer productive lifetime and producing more calves during that lifetime which results in a big advantage economically.

THE RESULTS

• Your ProCross cow will be slightly shorter in stature than your current Holstein with improved body condition and feet/ legs. She will produce slightly more/ slightly less milk than your current Holstein but with significantly increased components.

• Most of our ProCross herds will have a butterfat average from 3.80% to 4.40% fat and protein averages from 3.30% to 3.65% depending upon time of year and bulls used.

• The average ProCross cow will weigh 200- 300 lbs more than the same sized Holstein due to body condition. The ProCross cows excellent body condition usually results in a very high price when culled from your herd.

• Long term ProCross herds typically have a voluntary & involuntary cull rate between 18% and 28%.

• With improved health traits and survivability, excess heifers will be available for growth or sales.
