Publisher’s Notes

By Raf Viniard

June is absolutely flying by. I have not even had time to wet a line this

month but it is in the plans for this weekend with it being Father’s Day.

I am a new Father as of last week...yep...a bouncing brand new

Leopard Cur puppy. His picture graces the cover of this issue. I have a

lot of training to do between now and cat season. Read the hunting

article inside to see how that is going.

Don’t forget that special Father in your life and especially our Father in

heaven for allowing you to spend another day with your family and

friends.

Last week we gave you part one of Robert Hosea aka “TheBobFactor”

fish tale. This week as “Paul Harvey” would say…”...the rest of the

story”. I went ahead and left Part 1 in this issue so you would not have

to go back and open the last issue just to remember what happened

before. This week is Part 2 and the story can be read in its entirety. Be

sure and check out the video as well:

Okay it is your turn...send us those photos of your turkey, bear, fish or

something that truly represents Montana for publishing consideration.

We are always looking for writers and pictures of Montanan’s at play!

Don’t forget to support our advertisers. Without them Montana Woods

n Water will not exist. We need their

business for us to stay in business

and keep you informed, entertained

and educated. Enjoy your summer

but remember to be safe out there!

“Whiskey” Breath By Raf Viniard

Whether you are young or old holding a new puppy just melts the stress away. Puppy breath is so recognizable and it takes us back down memory lane to past puppies that have graced our lives. To kids it is another playmate and for us adults it is the beginning of hopefully a life long relationship and many long hours and miles of companionship and/or hunting adventures. Visions of days afield or in the woods with your new hunting partner can send you into a daydream for hours. You have a new tool in your arsenal of hunting gear but this one is special. He or she will be ready to go hunting with you when no one else has the time or desire to go. Rain, sleet, snow or hot sun they are ready. Whether hunting season is in or not they don’t care, they just want to spend time with you doing whatever it is you are doing. Just a ride into town as your co-pilot is fine with them. Sure they may take a nap on the way,

but they are ready to go at moments notice...don’t believe me...just come to a stop sign and they are back on full alert waiting for your command. You can read their mind as the ears go up and the tail starts to wag, “Is this where I get out, is this it, are we here, what are we doing boss?” However, the relationship between you and your new puppy goes much deeper than that...they become part of the family. From the moment you take possession, a relationship is being formed between you, your family and possibly other family pets. Just like raising a kid, they have to move through the phases of their life and you too will have some adjustments to make along the journey as well. Every puppy and breed are different, some are more hardheaded than others or have a slow learning curve. If you have kids you can fully relate to this statement. A lot of the same words you say to your kids like, “No, stop that, get out of there, leave that alone, get down, you hungry, come here, etc. fills your daily conversation. Just when you are ready to trade them (kids and pups) in for a new gun they do something that just makes you laugh and a smile goes across your face. They are so full of innocence and curiosity. For a puppy, life is a playground full of new smells, objects and adventures. When we brought Whiskey home, our other dog a Sasha, a Belgian Malinois had just settled into our routine and learned our rules, expectations and commands (work still in progress). We went from a normal home life to having a new member of the family that, whines, barks, piddles, poops and perforates everything its little sharp teeth can latch onto. In between all that...we have shoes, pet toys strewn all over the floors and other miscellaneous items brought from outside like pine cones, sticks, bark, chicken feathers, etc.. I feel like I am raising a two year old kid again. Throw in a few sleepless nights and that new gun is starting to sound like a good trade. If only I had a tenth of that energy! I pick Whiskey up to have that Father son chat about his misadventures and that puppy breathe hits me in the face...all is forgiven and we discuss the rules for the 100th time. I set him back down on the floor and off he goes to test my patience and resolve once again. I do believe that cavity between its ears is slow to fill. However, with each new day I see the cavity filling with loyalty, discipline, unconditional love and trust. As I write this article he is sprawled out taking a much needed nap...it has only taken me three hours to write this article as I have to watch him like a hawk. As his little legs and big furry feet jerk from a dream he is having, I only wish I could sleep like that again in the near future.

HUNTING

My buddy that I got (Whiskey) from is an avid cat hunter/outfitter and daily we share stories of how our new pups are progressing and making big plans for them this cat season. Both of us being new Dads we are always texting and sharing photos of our two hellions like proud new Fathers we are. He has the Dad of our two pups, so we are anxious to see if the apple falls close to the tree or far away. If they are half the dogs that their Father is, we have some winners. When Whiskey awakes from his deep sleep and ready to play again I will make a mad dash to pick him up and carry him outside before he forgets about the piddling in the floor conversation we have had too many times to count. As I pack him to the door he groans and lets out another big yawn and Whiskey’s breathe hits my nostrils and a smile comes across my face that we are in this together until one of us goes to the big happy hunting grounds. Welcome home Whiskey and good luck Cricket! Thanks George for my new “Best Friend”.

Bob Hosea “The BobFactor” often contributes some amazing and professional photographs to this

publication and our Facebook page. Bob is a man of many talents and has done something that is

just amazing. Pull the kids up and tell them you are about to read them a story. Bob put together

this fishing tale book and I feel it needs to be shared. He also has a audio version that can be heard

at the following link: https://youtu.be/XCZTI1ymPkM

Montana Woods n Water is in the process of compiling his book in a online version separate from

the publication. Keep following us on Facebook and we will announce its release in the very near

future. We want to thank Bob for sharing this amazing story and graphics that he put many hours

into to share with us and you our readers. Please share this publication with friends and relatives

so others may enjoy it as we have. Thanks again Bob...we appreciate you!
