Celebrating our Irish heritageOn behalf of Butte-Silver Bow and The Mining City, I extend a warm welcome to the visitors, supporters and organizers of the 12th annual Montana Irish Festival, An Ri Ra! Butte is truly honored and privileged to host this great event, and in reality THERE IS NO BETTER PLACE IN MONTANA TO HAVE IT!

Our Mining City has a rich history and culture and is known for many things. Run-ning a close second to its notoriety for copper is our strong and proud Irish heritage, without which our exceptional city would not be the same. Already recognized for its one-of-a-kind St. Patrick’s Day celebration and the crucial contribution to Montana and America’s Irish roots and culture, the addition of An Ri Ra added an authentic celebration of Butte’s emerald bloodlines in which we are perfectly matched. We look forward to hosting the festival for many years to come.

While in Butte, please enjoy your stay and our city’s outstanding hospitality. In addi-tion to reveling in the festival offerings, I urge you to explore our amazing Uptown Historic District where you can take in our awesome buildings and their many stories. Butte also has a number of unique eating, shopping and good-time locations both Uptown and downtown, so check out one of our amazing establishments. If you don’t have time to take it all in this trip (which you won’t), please come back and visit us!

Welcome and thanks again on behalf of our city. We hope that your experience in Butte is spectacular.

Slainte!

Matt Vincent, chief executive, Butte-Silver Bow County

The streak continues. Butte’s own “Dublin Gulch” returns to An Ri Ra for the umpteenth time and retains the title of “the only act to appear at every Montana Irish Festival.”The band, named for one of Butte’s one-time, Irish neighborhoods, is known for its combi-nation of Celtic tunes and traditional and contemporary Irish folk songs. In recent years, its repertoire has grown to include a number of self-produced songs and tunes with decid-edly local flavor. Butte native and charter member Tom Powers handles most of the lead vocals and pro-vides bodhran rhythm. Walkerville’s Mick Cavanaugh adds guitar, mandolin, tenor banjo, and stellar whistle playing. John Joyner of Missoula contributes melody and rhythm on fiddle and five-string banjo. Helena’s Jim Schulz sings harmony and lead vocals, plays gui-tar, bouzouki and mandolin, and is credited with providing the group’s new material. Working in true “Irish time” — who needs a watch when you have a good, accurate cal-endar — they are still piecing together a new recording to complement the previous “Any Day Above Ground Is a Good One” and “Dirty Old Town.’’ The project will include a number the new Schulz compositions. “Dublin Gulch” will kick off Saturday’s festivities at “The Original.’’

Rory Makem Presented by the Maloney family

A seasoned performer with over 25 years on the road, Rory Makem has toured exten-sively with The Makem and Spain Brothers and for 17 years toured and played guitar with his father, the legendary Tommy Makem. He has entertained countless sold-out venues, festivals, and theaters throughout the United States, Canada, England, Scotland and Ireland.

At his best on stage, Rory captivates audiences with his skilled musicianship, his cha-risma and passion for the songs, his extensive knowledge of poetry and history, and his humor.

The love of song runs deep in the family. Continuing a legacy handed down from his grandmother, the seminal source singer Sarah Makem, Rory pulls the songs of the the sailors, the laborers, the lovers, the fighters and the land from the pages of history and breathes life into them.

An adept interpreter of folk songs, he masterfully accompanies himself on guitar, ban-jo, mandolin or bouzouki.

Not limiting himself to the stage, Rory has performed on movie soundtracks includ-ing A Fool and His Money, and The Lightkeeper. His compositions can be heard woven into the backdrop for PBS series as diverse as Tommy Tang’s Modern Thai Cuisine to It’s an Age Thing, to Simply Painting.

Learning from those who came before you is the essence of folk music -- and Rory has the great honor of learning from the best.

The Elders Presented by Town Pump

Since forming in 1998, The Elders have set the music scene on its ear, thanks to a skillful blend of American roots rock and amped-up Celtic folk; a cross-pollination of elements that is high-octane and progressive, yet rooted in tradition.

They are Ian Byrne, vocals, percussion, whistle; Steve Phillips, vocals, guitar, mandolin; Brent Hoad, vocals, keyboards, fiddle, guitar, mandolin; Norm Dahlor, vocals, bass, guitar, banjo; Kian Byrne - drums, bass, mandolin; and Colin Farrell, fiddle, whistle, flute.

It didn’t take long to establish themselves as one of the top American Celtic-rock bands, head-lining some of the biggest Celtic festivals in North America and Europe, and quickly gaining critical attention in prestigious publications such as PASTE Magazine, Music Row Magazine, Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange, Goldmine Magazine, TRAD Magazine (France), Chicago Sun-Times, Kansas City Star and many more.

Employing a variety of instruments including guitars, drums, banjo, accordion, mandolin, piano and fiddle, these six gentlemen collectively create music that transcends the stereotypical notion of Celtic music. The band features powerful four-part harmonies, blazing instrumentals and song writing that is unaffected by fads, trends and the giant maw of mind-numbing commer-cialism.

Their songs are mystical, comical, political and cultural, while covering a wide variety of top-

ics such as poverty, civil war, family bonds, spirituality, love and friendship. They tell us stories of people, places and events — some recent, some distant, some real and some imagined.

Radio embraced several tracks from their previous albums and their album “Wander-ing Life & Times,” released in 2011, resulting in top 25 positions on the national Ameri-cana Radio chart.

The band is also familiar to many television viewers, thanks to the more than 130 PBS stations across the nation that aired their “Live at the Gem Theater” Concert Special.

To date, The Elders have produced six full-length studio CDs and 3 live CD/DVDs

SOLAS Solas is the quintessential Irish-American band recording and touring in the U.S. today. Fifteen years ago, in a manner befitting its name (Gaelic for “light”), Solas burst onto the Irish music scene and instantly became a hit. Anchored by founding members Seamus Egan (flute, tenor banjo, mandolin, whistles, guitars, bodhran) and Winifred Horan (violins, vocals), Solas is rounded out by Mick McAuley (accordions, low whistle, concertina, vocals), Eamon McElholm (guitars, keyboards, vocals), and newest member and lead singer, Niamh Varian-Barry. Through fresh and unexpected arrangements of age-old tunes, compelling and topical originals and covers, and unparalleled musicianship, Solas continues to define the path for the Celtic music world and drive the genre forward. With 10 albums under its belt, Solas’ band leader Seamus Egan was inspired by his family history to create Shamrock City – their most ambitious project to date. Shamrock City tells the story of Butte at the turn of the 20th century as seen through the eyes of an Irish immigrant and Seamus’ great-great

uncle, Michael Conway. In 1910 he sailed from Cobh, Co. Cork in Ireland to Philadelphia and then made his way to Butte to work in the copper mines. Six years later, at the young age of 25, he was dead from a blow to the head. With audio recorded in Philadelphia and film footage in Butte, Shamrock City seeks to not only uncover the life and young death of Conway, but to also illuminate life as an immigrant during the Industrial Revolution.

It’s no secret that Solas is often drawn to musical social commentary — “Pastures of Plenty” and “The Wind That Shakes The Barley” are core to their repertoire, and they’ve covered political songs by Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits and Josh Ritter. The themes in and around Shamrock City, particularly the stories and lives of immigrants, are reflected prominently in the headlines. With the Shamrock City project, Solas seeks to reach beyond the music by creating opportunities for fans to share their family histories at tour stops and online. In the process, the project aims to create a more meaningful and open dialogue about many of the issues we face in to-day’s America. For anyone who associ-ates Irish music solely with pubs, green beer and March, be prepared to have your mind firmly changed.

Tiernan Irish Dancers The Tiernan Irish Dancers schools are located in Butte and Helena and were founded in 2004 by Mark Howard of the Trinity Academy of Irish Dance. After Trinity’s first visit to Montana for An Ri Ra 2002, Howard decided to create a permanent connection with our Montana dancers.

By sending Trinity instructors, music, choreography and business model, he has elevated and inspired the level and skill of Irish dance in Montana.

The Tiernan schools are under the instruction of Caitlin Hubick and Ellen Waller of Trin-ity and assistant instructors Kerry Powers and Krista Gormely. There will be 130 dancers from Butte and Helena Tiernan schools, between the ages of 3 and 18 years old perform-ing this year.

The families of Tiernan are celebrating the 12th year of performing at An Ri Ra and are forever grateful for the opportunities An Ri Ra and M.G.C.S. have provided for Irish dance in Montana.

Evans & DohertyKevin Evans & Brian Doherty have been an integral part of the East Coast music scene for over 30 years. They have been together as Evans & Doherty for more than 26 years. To capture the essence of an Evans & Doherty performance, take a lively blend of traditional, original and contemporary songs, add a liberal sprinkling of stories and humor, then sit back and enjoy these fine entertainers.

As well as performing front and center on stage, Evans & Doherty are involved with many aspects of the music industry. Brian owns and operates Eastern Entertainment Agency, a booking agency and produc-tion company which co-ordinates tours of Atlantic Canada for many Canadian and international acts. Kevin owns and operates Modtrad Music, a publishing company, through which much of the material performed by Evans & Doherty is published and licensed.

As a songwriter and producer, Kevin has enjoyed success; his song “Christmas Memories” achieved platinum status in Canada for John McDermott. Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy recorded “The Orchard,” another of Kevin’s songs. Stompin’ Tom Connors has recently recorded Kevin’s “Silver Sea,’’ a great compliment considering Stompin’ Tom doesn’t usually record other people’s material.

Evans & Doherty along with Jimmy Sweeney, have a recording titled “Sailing Ships & Sailing Men,” the musical companion to a one-hour radio program written by the trio and broadcast on CBC’s Atlantic Airwaves. The program deals with life at sea and the songs used by sailors while they worked.

Trinity Irish Dancers Irish Dance from beginners to World Champions

The Trinity Irish Dancers return by popular demand, to thrill audiences and inspire young Montana dancers with their cutting edge, World Championship level performances at this year’s An Ri Ra. Having just returned from headliner performances in festivals in Spain and Japan, they continue to surprise and delight audiences with their dynamic and colorful presentations.

Thirteen dancers will perform this year, four of whom are young men. Tyler Swartz and Peter Dziak lead the team, each having won first place in their age divisions in this year’s World Championships. The Trinity Dancers are from the Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison, Wis., area and are under the direction of founder Mark Howard.

They consider An Ri Ra to be one of their favorite shows in their year of world travel. They enjoy Butte’s famous hospitality, which has come to be known at Trinity as “the Butte Treatment,” and love their host families. They also enjoy teaching Irish dance in festival workshops while getting to know some of the local and regional dancers, especially their extended family, The Tiernan Irish Dancers.

2014 An Rí Rá MemorialsOne of the most endearing qualities of the Irish is our ability to impact the world in which we live and the lives of those we have touched. It is with great respect that we honor all of the people on thismemorial list who have left an everlasting impression in our lives. Our lives have been enriched bythese people, and they will never be forgotten.

“I’ll walk beside you through the passing years, through days of cloud and sunshine, joy and tears, and when the great call comes, though sunset gleams, I’ll walk beside you through the land ofdreams”

Memorial List of Family, Friends and Loved Ones

Whiskey Asylum Presented By Headframe Spirits

In 2007, a reunion formed spontaneously at the Dublin Irish Festival between the Prodigals and the Mickey Finns, and took the name “Whiskey Asylum.”

The super-group has headlined festivals from Albany to Montana; the effect is instant and dramatic, a soaring blend of vocals and instrumentals, melding front and back lines with a cumulative strength comparable only to the Pogues or Flogging Molly.
