Dear Monmia Families,.
GREAT THINGS I NOTICED THIS WEEK
1. The "Wish I Was.." Parade was fantastic with so many children dressed up in fabulous
outfits. Congratulations to all the staff who joined in and looked amazing in what they
wished to be!!!! It just confirms the way we do things at Monmia with everyone joining
in!! Thank you to Nat and Dean for ensuring a successful Literacy and Numeracy
Week.
2. The Partnerships in Learning Curriculum Day on Feedback was highly interactive and
was buzzing from the start of the day to the very finish. The four schools’ staffs were
very engaged and were able to have several take aways that they could use back in
their own classrooms.
3. Classroom Instruction That Works professional learning on Friday was another big
learning and informative day for the Leadership Team and all the Teaching and
Learning Leaders. Coming on top of the previous day's learning we could all see the
links between visible learning, feedback and Classroom Instruction That Works. 4. Year 5/6 E students industriously working on their costumes and props for their concert
item. They look fantastic. Year 5/6 students rehearsing their class item for the concert.
WHOLE SCHOOL CONCERT-“WE ARE AUSTRALIAN!”
The school concert happens every second year and is a very big deal at Monmia. It’s one
part of our school community’s many extracurricular events that we hold to celebrate our
children’s learning. The concert is the end product of the students’ participation and learning
in Performing Arts and as such is part of the curriculum and part of our students’ overall
assessment for Semester 2. Over the years the concert has grown so popular that we had to
find a bigger and better venue – Moonee Valley Racecourse which holds 900 seats. This
event has been enjoyed by Monmia families over the years as it provided their children with
the opportunity to perform to an audience. There are not many opportunities for this to
happen unless individual children are involved in dance, calisthenics or performing arts
programs other than school. Therefore, it is an expectation that all students participate and
attend the school concert. Of course, there are individual circumstances where families have
other commitments or are overseas at the time of the concert. I would encourage all parents/
guardians to ensure that their children participate and avoid their children making the final
decision.
Next Thursday there is a whole school rehearsal where all items are practised prior to the

If your child is absent from school it is crucial to inform the school as to the reason for the absence. To communicate a student absence to the school please: make a phone call to Norma or Catherine in the school office between 8.30am to
9.30am on the day of the absence. send an email to the school’s email, [email protected], to inform
the school of the absence. send a written note and/or certificate to the classroom teacher when your child
returns. Thank you for your support with the school’s attendance procedures.
evening’s extravaganza. In previous years we would take all students as there were only a
few not attending. However if there are large numbers of students not attending they will
have to remain at school where they will be supervised and engaged in learning activities
throughout the day. If you have any concerns please contact me through the office. Also if
you are worried about transport there is still plenty of room on the bus which is a FREE
service we provide. I promise that you will have a treasured memory of your children’s
performance.
I hope you can all come to this magical night.
Warm Regards,
Lorraine Bell Principal

CASEA COMMUNITY FORUM
Thank you to the parents/guardians who attended our first session on
Monday. Here is some feedback received after the session:
“Thank you, thank you, thank you. This was probably one of the most useful, easy to understand
and informative forums I have been to. I will definitely use this information and am determined to
change. I’ll keep you updated and hope my volcano is totally calm.”
“ Yes, made me realise I focus on the negative or actions/chores not completed rather than
praising good behaviour.”
“I will try labelling praise, using appropriate consequences, responding to desirable behaviour.
All of the strategies seem very helpful and useful to use in day-to-day raising of my children”
“I am going to be specific in my praise and avoid saying ’Can you please….?’”
Our last session will be on FRIDAY 11th SEPTEMBER at 2.00PM - 3.30PM
(AFTERNOON SESSION)
In the Professional Learning Room at Monmia Primary School
We are inviting all Monmia Parents/Guardians to join us at this Community
Forum to find out more about ‘Managing Your Child’s Behaviour’.
We look forward to seeing you there.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE CASEA PROGRAM
A WELLBEING AND RESILIENCE PROGRAM
THE CASEA FOCUS FOR THIS WEEK IS: Being Assertive: The cool, weak and aggro way!
Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter: http://twitter.com/MonmiaPS
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This week we will be looking at being assertive in managing emotions and conflicts. There are three basic ways children may respond but the most appropriate response is an assertive one. We call this the COOL WAY!
An Assertive Response (COOL WAY) to problem solving usually involves people standing up for themselves in a firm but friendly way. People who are assertive:
use STOP, THINK and DO when problem solving
stand tall and look the person in the eyes
smile and look calm
feel happy, confident, in control and happy about themselves
A Passive Response (WEAK WAY) is more likely when children lack confidence in their ability to deal with a problem. They become fearful and let others give them a hard time or agree to things they really don’t want to do. Passive responses result in a loss of self-respect and respect from others and problems are not solved successfully.
An Aggressive Response (AGGRO WAY) tends to escalate the conflict and often results in injury or property damage and loss of self-esteem. Being aggressive involves reacting with any of the following behaviors:
a. hitting, punching, tripping
b. using insults and put-downs
c. shouting and yelling
d. damaging property
Family Activity As a family, discuss the following problem and identify which way the person has chosen to respond. Which one is the COOL WAY to respond?
Problem: You don’t get the birthday present that you were hoping for. 1. Yell at the person who got you the present 2. Begin to sulk and cry 3. Say thank you for the present that you got 4. Throw the present in the bin
I hope you found this article interesting and useful and please share any feedback you may have with me. Next week we will continue looking at the CASEA units.
Warm Regards,
Lucy Vorpasso

As you know, our school has been participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn
program.
The program has now finished for this year, so a big thanks to everyone who supported
our school. We're now at the important stage of the program where the Sticker Sheets
are collected and lodged as our Earn & Learn claim. We will then be able to get new
educational equipment for our school. The more we collect, the more we can redeem!
So this week, please send in your Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheets and any
loose Earn & Learn stickers you may have. Remember to check your handbag, the car
glove box or they may be stuck on the fridge. Every little bit helps. Thanks again for all
your support!

required to finish logging all the books they have read by Friday 11th September.
You have all done an amazing job and read so many books!!

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Monmia is a Bucket Filling School! We fill buckets and we don’t dip!
We use our lid to keep our bucket full and keep the drops in! I love how the Bucket Fillers Philosophy has been embraced by our school community this year. I know that we can keep filling other people’s buckets and make Monmia Primary School a warm, positive and caring place to be. When we all fill other people’s buckets then all community members benefit from these acts of kindness. There is so much to acknowledge at Monmia Primary School! Here are some ‘drops’ for you to read.
Remember that when you fill someone else’s bucket, you fill yours as well so keep filling buckets Monmia!
Happy Bucket Filling!
Kind Regards,
