Flat tombstone inside the chapel under the pulpit. The inscription begins: ''Here lies the body of HUGH AYSCOUGH, gent, died 1704''. He gave the land for the chapel. The rest of the inscription is worn and difficult to read, but contains the words “Baptist worship for ever”, a reference to the purpose for which the land was given.

C2 Wright In memory of JOHN WRIGHT, Firsby, died September. Displaced gravestone, lying flat inside the chapel on the right hand side near the stove. The remainder of the inscription is unclear.

Herring Mary Herring – Her ashes are scattered in the wood.

Sources Three sources have been used in compiling the plans and inscriptions • A typewritten list of inscriptions compiled prior to 1985. A digital version of this is published on

the Friends of Monksthorpe web site (FOM) www.monksthorpe.com • A survey done by ArcHeritage for the National Trust and reproduced in their major document:

“Monksthorpe Chapel and Graveyard - Archaeological Survey Report” .The National Trust has kindly given permission for the grave positions on the maps to be based on those shown on the site plan in the Archaeological Survey Report.

• The author’s own measurements and notes compiled during 2014-2016. Notes The Archaeological Survey report contains historic maps, detailed descriptions of the site and all the buildings. There is a photograph of every gravestone and a detailed note of features and condition. Where part or the whole of an inscription is illegible, it is possible that a visit to the graveyard at dusk, armed with a powerful torch to shine across the surface of a stone, may bring up some of these inscriptions.
