Mongolian Khanthe Motivation for Bosson

Opie Bosson has a spring in his step as he approaches Saturday’s Caulfield Cup.

But it hasn’t always been that way for the talented rider who burst onto the Australian scene as a 17 year-old apprentice to win the 1998 VRC Oaks on grand archway (Archway).

Weight, and through that a lack of motivation, has seen Bosson take extended breaks from racing’s tough environment.

Now the 35-year-old has his weight under control and

the motivation is back as he embarks on what he hopes will be a career highlight when he partners $4.40 favourite Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor) in the Caulfield Cup.

Bosson credits the support of New Zealand breeder Mark Chittick with helping get him on a regime where his fitness and eating habits have improved.

“I went and stayed with him for a while,” Bosson said.“I’d go to the gym everyday and have my meals prepared

and then work on the farm with him through the day.“Previously I was doing things the wrong way with my

weight but once I got on a proper eating regime and fitness regime I started feeling a lot better in myself and the weight started controlling itself.

“It was good to get away from racing and get it down properly without having to sweat.”

Bosson has continued that ethic and will ride Mongolian Khan comfortably at 55kg on Saturday.

With victories in the New Zealand Derby and the ATC Australian Derby during his three-year-old year, Bosson said Mongolian Khan was looking to return to the 2400m journey.

His three runs this campaign have been excellent, topping

it off with a last-start third behind fellow NZ-bred Criterion (nZ) (Sebring) in the weight-for-age Caulfield Stakes last Saturday.

And another key ingredient was a good draw on Tuesday. Mongolian Khan drew barrier nine and will start from six if the four emergencies don’t gain a start.

“We didn’t want to draw one, two or three,” Bosson said.“It will allow us to stay out a little bit.“He’s stepped up with each run and on his run the other

day you would expect him to be spot on for this one.” - AAP TURF

PreferMent the next Big thingsaid at Moonee Valley on Thursday.

“He’s already a two-time Group 1 winner, obviously the Derby in Australia, which means little - even in New Zealand these days - which is really hard to understand.

“We’ve got some great sprinters, probably best in the world. Do we need to be over dominant in that? Should we look at what Japan’s done and increase the gene pool with the stayers and give us an overall product? I think we should.

“We don’t want to just be known for the best sprinters in the world. We want to be known for the best horses in the world.

“We’ve got the right conditions. We’ve got the right structure in place in terms of prizemoney for investment for owners.

“It’s logical to start breeding to

Cox Plate contender Preferment during his recent Gr. 1 Turnbull Stakes victory

these horses that can run at three - he’s won a Derby as an early season three-year-old, and he’s come back and won a Turnbull.

“A Cox Plate would look pretty good on his resume, and would obviously put his value through the roof.”

Winx (Street Cry) was Waller’s sharpest on Thursday, clocking the fastest final 400m sectional - 23.96 seconds - while fellow NZ-bred Kermadec (nZ) (Teofilo) (1:08.51) was quickest of the trio in their five furlongs of work.

And Waller was certainly not ruling out one-time favourite Kermadec, who now sits on the third line of Cox Plate betting.

“He’s got plenty of weight on,” Waller said of Kermadec’s condition, after running on for fourth in the Caulfield Stakes.

Chris Waller said he has high hopes NZ-bred Preferment (nZ) (Zabeel) can consolidate

his stallion value in the Cox Plate, and go on to be ‘the next big thing’ in breeding tough stayers.

Waller has his strongest hand heading to Australasia’s greatest weight-for-age championship, with each of Preferment (Turnbull Stakes), Winx (Epsom Handicap) and Kermadec (George Main Stakes) all winning key lead-up races.

The powerhouse trainer, who has 53 Group 1 wins to his name, still has an eye beyond the Cox Plate on October 24 for Preferment, the son of Zabeel out of Better Alternative (Flying Spur).

“That’s the reason Preferment’s running in the Cox Plate. He could be the next big thing [as a stallion],” Waller

“We purposefully went three weeks [after the George Main] and then two weeks to the Cox Plate for that reason, he does really well in between runs and I think on Saturday he probably was a bit soft in retrospect, as well as a few things going against him. He’s pulled up really well.

“Glen Boss rode him this morning, he said he was on the right leg at every stage he needed to be, and he really let down strongly on a more forgiving surface.”

Talented sprinter silver eclipse (nZ) (Darci Brahma) begins a long-range quest for Gr.1 The JR & N Berkett Telegraph spoils when

she resumes at Rotorua on Saturday. The Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie-trained

Darci Brahma five-year-old mare tackles the Gr.3 Lochinver Station Plate (1200m) at Rotorua for rider Sam Collett.

It is certainly a drop in class for Silver Eclipse, who contested three Group One races to end her four-year-old campaign, finishing fifth in the Railway Stakes at Trentham, seventh in The Telegraph and eighth in the NRM Sprint at Te Rapa.

She has won both her previous fresh-up starts from a 90-day break and Garry Cossey, racing manager for Silver Eclipse’s breeder-owner Sir Peter Vela, is expecting a bold run.

“She’s very well at the moment,” Cossey said.“She’s coming up really well and she goes

well fresh, but she’s got an awkward draw [barrier 12] so that makes it tricky and we’re under no illusions.

“But this is the kick-off point and then Peter will make a decision where she goes next,

race in the same grade at Otaki on Saturday.“Duquesa’s two runs back have been well short of her best

- she’s been disappointing, but she’s hard-fit now and ready to go for Saturday,” Cossey said.

“She’s got the blinkers on for the first time and we’re expecting a big run. Over 2100m, it looks a race she’s well capable of winning and she should be putting her best foot forward.

“Rasa Lila has had two trials for her first-up run, but she’s got a wide gate and she was good enough to run third in the Dunstan Final for James [McDonald] last season.”

Meanwhile, Cossey said Irion (NZ) (Danroad), who was scratched from last Saturday’s Gr.3 Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes at Hawera, would now resume at Ellerslie on Saturday week.

whether she goes back down to Riccarton where she won the Pegasus Stakes last year or chase black-type races up here.”

A winner of five of her 12 starts, Silver Eclipse is one of the main flagbearers for Sir Peter’s racing team and hails from the family of Finezza Belle (NZ) (Sir Tristram) that Pencarrow Stud has bred from for several generations.

“Peter’s main goal is the Telegraph and she seems to go really well down the Trentham dog leg. She was a bit unlucky in the race last season and that’s the ultimate goal,” Cossey said.

Stablemates Duquesa (nZ) (Encosta de Lago) and rasa lila (nZ) (Darci Brahma) will also be in action in Sir Peter’s colours this weekend, with Gr.3 Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup entry Duqeusa contesting a 2100m Rating 85 race at Tauranga on Friday and Rasa Lila tackling a 1600m

NEWS IN BRIEF

Puccini (NZ) (Encosta De Lago)

“I’m proud of my training record and at 60 years of age my next goal is to work hard for the next five years and reach a career total of 2000 winners, “ Pitman said. “My son Matthew is just as enthusiastic about training winners as I was at the same age, and I’m confident he will continue in the same vein.”

Puccini to back up at CaulfieldNew Zealand galloper Puccini (nZ)

(Encosta de Lago) will race without ear muffs in Saturday’s Gr.3 David Jones Cup at Caulfield.

He was unplaced a week ago in the Gr.1 Toorak Handicap after missing the start with rider Ben Melham believing the muffs contributed to the slow beginning.

The likely horse to beat in the David Jones Cup will be the topweight and classy four-year-old Stratum Star (Stratum), who already has a Group One win and two Group One placings this spring.

In other gear changes for Caulfield, Volkstok’n’barrell (NZ) (Tavistock) and Lucia Valentina (NZ) (Savabeel) will race without blinkers in the Gr.1 Caulfield Cup and the topweight Protectionist (Monsun) will race in winkers.

career at Avondale on Wednesday.Lizzie L’Amour (NZ) (Zabeel) stepped out

for the first time over 1400 metres and ran out a comfortable winner in the hands of Matt Cameron.

“She had a nice, soft run back on the fence and Matt presented her at the right time,” co-trainer Andrew Forsman said.

“I thought she would go really well, her work at home had been very good.”

sale incentives at riccartonTwo upcoming races at Riccarton will

carry Ready to Run Sale incentive packages offered by New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance.

The winning trainers of the respective two and three-year-old events on October 24 and November 11 will receive $500 travel expenses, a free NZB Insurance policy for a Ready to Run Sale purchase up to $40,000, free transport to the trainer’s stable courtesy of Majestic Horse Transport and a one year subscription to The Informant online.

The sale will be held on November 18 and 19 at Karaka with breeze-ups on October 19 and 20 at Te Rapa.

Best yet to come from dual winner A future gear addition will see Big

Dreamer (nZ) (No Excuse Needed) fully realise her potential, according to trainer Paul Mirabelli.

The four-year-old has fashioned the tidy record to date of two wins and six placings, including a fourth in last season’s Listed Soliloquy Stakes, with the promise of much more to come.

“She’s got the attributes you don’t always see in thoroughbreds – a low heart rate and a stride bigger than most and she’ll be even better with blinkers on,” Mirabelli said. full story here.

filly to work her magic at otakihocus Pocus (nZ) (Per Incanto) has been

restricted by injury to just three starts and she gets an opportunity at Otaki on Saturday to make up for lost time.

The filly was successful on debut at Wanganui last season, where she beat the subsequent Group winner Serena Miss (NZ) (Iffraaj), before she finished fifth in the Listed Wellesley Stakes at Trentham.

Michael Pitman

Volkstok’n’barrell (NZ) (Tavistock)

Pitman close to magic markTop South Island trainer Michael Pitman is

on the verge of a notable milestone. The Riccarton-based horseman has sent

out 1616 winners since he began training in 1979, but it is his success this millennium that deserves a loud round of applause.

After a three-season training stint in Victoria in the late nineties, Pitman returned permanently to Riccarton Park in the 2000-01 season and he is now just four short of becoming the first trainer to send out 1000 winners this century.

Connections upbeat with volkstok’n’barrell

Part-owner Garry Cossey is putting his faith in Northland trainer Donna Logan’s ability to improve volkstok’n’barrell’s (nZ) (Tavistock) form ahead of Saturday’s $A3 million Caulfield Cup (2400m).

The Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas winner hasn’t finished closer than fifth in four runs this preparation in Melbourne, but Cossey had reason for optimism ahead of the Caulfield showpiece.

“He’s got a good draw [barrier 11] and his work the other day looked vastly improved from what it had been,” he said.

“Donna peaked Rising Romance for this race last year [finished second] and I’m hoping she can do the same this weekend. It’s a strong field but at his best, he’s a top five chance.”

trial result franked on race dayTrial form proved to be an accurate guide

in the opening event at Avondale when Cavallucci (nZ) (Showcasing) won the NZB Insurance Peal Series Race on debut.

The Showcasing two-year-old had beaten Maui Miss (nZ) (Pins) in an 800 metre heat on the course last month and that result was replicated on Wednesday.

“He drew out well in the end, pricked his ears and did it nicely,” said Debbie Sweeney, who trains Cavallucci with her father Graeme. “He’s very professional and he came through his trial well.”
