Sam Smith

Page 2: Money On My Mind - Sam Smith Deconstruction

Shot Type and Movement: Low angle shot, long shot, still cam, changes to mid angles, close up of hands on table, mildly shaky cam.

Music/Lyrics: Song startsSlow beat with a low white noise beat.

Edit: Cuts to shots of the gambling tables, one cut to Sam. Background noise can be heard, cheering. Rapid cuts between the shots of the table, Sam and the couple at the tables.

Analysis: The music begins by showing areas of Las Vegas, including some of the gambling tables, in this case, only the roulette table is shown, Vegas is known for heavy gambling and therefore the possibility of making thousands of dollars, relating to the title of the song, suggesting that money would mainly be on the mind of people who visit Vegas in order to attempt to make it big.

Shot Type and Movement: Extreme long shot, mid angle, centre of the rule of thirds, still cam, moving backwards slowly.

Analysis: This shot shows Sam in the outskirts of Vegas (the main area is seen in the background.) The outskirts are known to be dangerous and display no signs of the rich and famous.Sam in these streets wears fancy clothes, usually associated with someone with a lot of money. He also lip syncs with the song and performs slow gestures with his hands, as he shakes his hands slowly to the sides when the line ‘I’m sorry I won’t do that I believe.’ like a ‘no’ gesture.

Music/Lyrics:‘ “Please can you, write a song for me?” ‘‘ I say “I’m sorry I won’t do that I believe.” ‘Beat slows and stops at the end of this line.

Edit: Cuts every time the sound of fingers clicking is heard in the music. Cuts between the outskirts of Vegas at day and the main streets at night.

Shot Type and Movement: Long shot, centre with the rule of thirds, shaky cam, tracking backwards, mid angle

Analysis: Sam is now in the streets at night, when Vegas is most active, streets filled with people and busy traffic.

Sam continues to walk down the street, lip synching with the song, performing hand gestures with the song, putting her arm out when the line’ please can you’ is sung, and putting his hand to his chest when the song says ‘make this work for me’ is sung. This relates to Goodwin’s theory as there is a link between lyrics and visuals.

Music/Lyrics:‘Please can you, make this work for me? ‘‘ ‘Cause I’m not a puppet, I will work against your strings.’Beat slows and stops again.

Edit: Cuts to Sam in the outskirts at day. Same camera shots and movements, Sam's placement with the rule of thirds makes it almost look like one continuous take.

Page 5: Money On My Mind - Sam Smith Deconstruction

Shot Type and Movement: Low angle, long shot, tracking cam downwards.

Analysis: These set of shots shown two men in a back end motel, having a moment with a model, giving a huge sum of money to the model, relating to the lyrics (if the lyrics were literal) saying that money can bring can bring happiness; can literally give you love. Again, relating to Goodwin’s theory with an unusual link between lyrics and visuals. Also, this relates to stereotypes based around Vegas as people are assumed to enjoy going to the back street motels to get some action from someone like a barmaid.

Music/Lyrics:‘I don’t have’‘money on my mind’‘money on my mind’‘I do it for, I do it for the love.’

Edit: Cuts to shot of people being served in a bar by a hot girl half dressed; cuts to a three shot of the people being served.

Shot Type and Movement: Extreme long shot, two shot, zooms towards couple, until it becomes a long shot.

Analysis: This shot shows a couple from the previous scenes outside a wedding venue after a marriageafter a night in Vegas, Showing that, contrast to the popular belief, money can bring you happiness, relating to the song title as money was the primary factor to bringing them happiness. Relating to Goodwin's theory of a relationship between lyrics and visuals.

Also, the next shots shows close-ups of Sam Smith, relating to another part of Goodwin’s theory which demands close-ups of the artists.

Music/Lyrics: Beat break.Edit: Cuts to Sam in the darkness, looking down, then to (assuming) Sam at a different angle to the side. Lastly to Sam at the front of a casino with flashing lights.

Page 7: Money On My Mind - Sam Smith Deconstruction

Shot Type and Movement: Extreme long shot, Rule of Thirds, Sam to the far right, walking to the left. Tracks to the left.

Analysis: this shot shows Sam in the outskirts of Vegas with two other men in the shot. The props and costumes used by the two men in the background suggest that they’re homeless. Where Vegas is known for either making it big more making it bust, relating to the title of the song where money was on their mind, but didn’t go to plan. Relating to Goodwin’s theory with a contrasting relationship between the title and visuals.

Music/Lyrics: Soft white noise music‘I do it for the love.’

Edit: Cuts with the beat, to a shot of a girl in Vegas in the middle of the night.
