We use money in many

different ways. Here are some

examples...Saving pocket money

in a piggy bank.

Paying for shopping at a supermarket.

Withdrawing banknotes from a cash machine.

Buying lunch in a café.

Saving money in a bank account.

Ordering tickets for a concert online.

Paying household bills.

Lending money to a friend.

When we buy things, we might not have the exact

money to pay the shopkeeper. So, we can give

them a bit too much and they give us the change.

40p

An apple costs 40p. If I pay with fifty pence, how much change do I receive?

To work out the amount of change, calculate the difference between

the total price and the amount that you give the shopkeeper.

50p - 40p = 10pThe change is 10p.

A toy truck costs £8.50. How much change will I get if I pay with £20?

£20.00 - £8.50 = £11.50The change is £11.50.£8.50

Earning InterestWhen you save money in a bank account, the bank will pay you to let them look after your money.

This is called interest.

If you save £100 in an account with an interest rate of 5%, after a

year you will have £105!

Paying InterestIf you borrow money, the lender

will charge you for this. The extra charge is also called interest.

If you borrow £100 in a loan with an interest rate of 15%, after a

year you will owe the bank £115(if you haven’t paid anything back).

There are two

different types ofinterest.Which of

these would you

prefer?
