When Henry VII died in 1509, his son Henry became Henry VIII. He is famous for being an excellent war commander,

as well as for being married six times during his reign.

One of the most famous things that Henry VIII did was to “break away from

the Roman Catholic Church.”

How Religious Was Henry VIII?

Have a look at the coins. What evidence of Henry’s religious

commitment can you find on a coin today?

In 1521, Pope Leo X granted Henry VIII the title of ‘Defender of the Faith’ after Henry wrote a pamphlet defending the Catholic

Church from the criticism of the Protestant movement.

Henry VIII was a devout Catholic, as was his wife, the Spanish Catherine of

Aragon.

How Religious Was Henry VIII?The title ‘Defender of the Faith’ was

passed down to the future monarchs of Britain.

The initials FD on all coins today are the Latin

shortening of the title.

What Was the Reformation?Throughout the 16th Century, many people in Europe were critical of the Catholic Church. Many protested against the inequality of the Catholic Church and what they believed to be the decadence of the Church.

In 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses against the Catholic Church against a church door in Wittenberg.

Many people agreed and there was a reforming (changing) of the Church in Europe.

This was The Reformation.

What Problems Did Henry Have in 1533?

1509 – Henry becomes King and marries his dead brother’s widow (Catherine of Aragon).

1521 – Henry becomes the ‘Defender of the Faith’.

1527 – Henry falls in love with Anne Boleyn –Catherine was too old to have more children.

1533 – Henry wants to marry Anne Boleyn, who refuses unless he divorces Catherine.

The Pope refuses to grant Henry an annulment (end) to his marriage to Catherine of Aragon.

Henry needs money to fund war with France.

Is religion, power, or money the most significant in deciding the cause of

the English Reformation?

We will be learning about Henry VIII’s 6 wives.

Henry VIII had three children from his six wives. They all became Tudor Kings and Queens of England.

Because he was the only male, Henry’s youngest child, Edward became King, when Henry VIII died in 1547. Edward VI was 9 years old at the time. He was the son of Jane Seymour

Edward was only King for 5 years, and died when he was 14 years old.

Edward was a Protestant.

Edward VI

Mary was the daughter of Henry’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon. She was a Roman Catholic. She reigned from 1553-1558.

She is often referred to as Bloody Mary. This is because during her reign, she executed many people that believed in the protestant faith.

Mary I claimed that Protestants were ‘Heretics’ (didn’t believe in God) and were often burnt alive at the stake.

Elizabeth was the daughter of Anne Boleyn. She was a Protestant. She became Queen when her sister Mary I died. She reigned from 1558-1603.

She was famous for defeating the Spanish, who tried to invade England with a huge Spanish fleet, called the Spanish Armada.

During her reign, William Shakespeare wrote a lot of his plays, which were performed at the Globe Theatre in London.

Elizabeth I

The Spanish were Catholic, and Philip II believed that the English throne should be ruled by a Catholic, not a Protestant.

Spain had the strongest navy during the Tudor period, yet England had developed superior cannon warfare on its ships.

The Spanish sent a huge fleet with an enormous army from France to conquer England.

However, there were many different reasons why the Armada failed.

Look at the primary sources and identify there reason why the Armada failed.

Why Did Henry Break with Rome? The cause of an event is rarely simple and often dependant on many factors. What caused the English Reformation? Again, the answer is not simple.

The following are all causes of the English Reformation. Cut them out and prioritise them in order of how important they are in causing the Reformation. You should organise the causes in the shape of a diamond, with your most important cause at the top and least at the bottom. There can be a few causes in the middle of the diamond that you feel are equally important.

Catherine of Aragon couldn’t have any more children and Henry couldn’t secure the Tudor line if he stayed married to her.

The Catholic Church was extremely wealthy. Henry needed money to fight wars against France and spend on his courts. The Catholic Monasteries were full of riches.

The Catholic Church was a rival to the power of the English Monarchy. A person can only have one true master and Henry wanted to be the only master in England.

Henry was angry that he was unable to get an annulment. He wasn’t used to being denied something.

There was a growing mood of unease at the hypocrisy of some Catholic monks and priests. Some drank, had relations with women and led wealth lives whilst preaching morality. People wanted reform of the Church.

The land owned by the Catholic Church would provide the monarchy with a guaranteed income for generations.

Henry loved Anne Boleyn and wanted to be married to the woman he loved.

Princes in Germany had reformed their churches to allow themselves more power and take advantage of the growing popularity of Protestantism.

Anne Boleyn was pregnant and if the child was born whilst she and Henry weren’t married, it would be illegitimate.
