Dear all It was lovely to see so many parents at our Social Evening on Thursday, simply to have a glass of wine and catch up. Thank you to the Friends Association for the superb organisation. We have had a super start to the half term, despite the cold and dark weather, and it was lovely to welcome students back to school on Monday. We are keen to expand our clubs and activities at lunch and breaktimes now the weather has got colder and damper. The prefect teams in both buildings are keen to run board games and jigsaw puzzle clubs. If you feel able to donate any age appropriate games and activities, please hand in at either reception by Friday 9 th November they will be very much appreciated. Year 7 have spent the past 3 days at Kingswood and have clearly had a wonderful time, this is such an important trip for our newest Archers as they secure their friendships and continue to grow in confidence. I will pre warn Yr7 parents that there may be some heavy duty washing taking place on their return! We are very much looking forward to our week long States of Mind Conference with Woodhouse College in the week of the 12 th November an in depth focus on mental health and wellbeing. Information about our panel debate, taking place at Woodhouse on Wednesday 14 th November, was distributed yesterday and I hope as many parents and students from Yr10 upwards will come and along to debate the very poignant question ‘When parents are setting boundaries for social media, how long is too long? Does time matter?’ Our States of Mind Conference will see each day in the week focus on a theme, taken from the 5Rights Campaign for a Digital 5 A Day. A summary of some of our headline guest speakers are shown below and the full timetable will be shared next week. Lots to look forward to and genuine time to think, reflect and focus on our wellness. STATES OF MIND – Mr Naylor States of Mind Week 12th – 16th November 2018 The Archer Academy and Woodhouse College are working together to bring students and parents a week long mental health and wellbeing conference ‘States of Mind’. The week is packed with a range of workshops, self-expression through dance, mindfulness and e-safety and students will examine questions such as:

What would a more creative world look like?

What is stopping us from connecting in the modern world?

What is the difference between a healthy or unhealthy distraction?

States of Mind – Panel Discussion, Wednesday 16th November, 7pm Woodhouse College. ‘When parents are setting boundaries for social media, how long is too long? Does time matter?’ The flagship event of the week, our States of Mind panel discussion is open to parents, students 14+ and the local community. Our expert guests will discuss the hot topics we all face as the parents of and first generation of online children. You will also have the chance to ask questions and help steer the debate. The aim of the discussion is to provide guidance for parents, from experts, on social media, its impact and the amount of time young people should be spending on it, how long is too long? Does time matter? We recognise that this is a complex issue with several factors to consider such as whether a user is active or passive and also the other benefits in being able to connect easily with others online.

Please book your place here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/states-of-mind-panel-discussion-tickets-52082257434 If you would like to submit a question in advance to be put to the panel, please email [email protected] before Wednesday 7th November and it will be put forward for consideration. Tickets are £5 plus booking fee for adults and £2 plus booking fee for students age 14+. Tickets will be going on general release to the local community from Monday, 5th November but Archer Academy and Woodhouse College parents and students have priority booking until then. We have limited financial support available. Please contact Miss Harrison, Headteacher, in confidence if you would like a complimentary ticket.

UNICORN GIRL – Mrs Csaky

Friday 16th November

Best-selling children’s author and former Archer parent Anne-Marie Conway

has kindly agreed to donate the profits from her latest book, Unicorn Girl, to

our Make Beaumont Brilliant campaign to build our new library/study centre

at Upper School. It’s perhaps our biggest fundraising drive for the new library

and we would love it if you could support this push, to get us to our £250,000

target.

The book is the perfect present for the festive season and is aimed at

children from 8 to 12. Please buy a copy for your child, friend’s child, nieces,

nephews, godchildren etc!

You can order your book/s via your child’s Parentpay account for £8.99 and

of this, £5 will go directly to the school. All orders received by Monday 12th

November will be given out to students on Friday 16th November and signed

by the author. Students in Lower School will also be able to visit Anne-Marie

in the library at break and lunchtime on Friday 16th and ask her to write a

dedicated note in their copy.

As well as signing copies, Anne-Marie will also be running activities for all

Year 7 students throughout the day. We’ve already given out a few advance

copies to students to read and we’ve been getting fantastic feedback. It’s a

page-turning, uplifting story which mixes issues such as bullying and isolation

with a good dose of magical realism.

Make Beaumont Brilliant/Unicorn Girl evening book launch. Please remember to book your tickets for the

evening event, Friday 16th November, 7-9pm, Upper School, Beaumont Close, Lonon N2 0GA here:

FRIENDS ASSOCIATION UPDATE – Sara Wolfin and Cathy du Vergier

Parents Social Evening It was wonderful to welcome so many parents to school last night for the school’s annual social evening. Thank you to everyone who made such delicious canapés, served drinks with a smile and came along to have a chat and find out more about how to get involved with the school. Our next event will be a wine tasting evening on Thursday 29th November. Please see flyer below and invite friends to come along. This evening is open to the local community as well as Archer parents.

DEBATE MATE – Miss Ogbaselase On Thursday after-school ,31 students attended the Debate Mate launch event at the Emmanuel Centre in Westminster. The event, which was hosted by none other than journalist Nick Robinson, was attended by over 4,000

students from across the capital. Students were presented with a mock debate on whether or not 16 year olds should be allowed to vote, during which our very own Jake I in 10SHA interjected to present his views on this very relevant issue.

Debate Mate gets underway on October 12th so stay tuned for more news... and hopefully some trophies!

BIG DRAW WEEK – Mr Pearson Big Draw Week 2018 was a fantastic experience. Highlights included: spray painting stencils, scraffito, glazed window biscuit baking and extended drawings. Year 10 Art students also visited the Wellcome Collection for a bespoke architecture workshop and Year 10 DT students led workshops at Lower School for the younger students.

WOW WORD OF THE WEEK

SHAKESPEARE SCHOOLS FOUNDATION – Miss Rodford

Shakespeare Schools Foundation is a cultural education charity, who hold the world’s largest youth drama Festival every Autumn. Our cast of year 8 and 9 students are performing 'A midsummer night’s dream' at The Arts Depot as part of the festival on Wednesday 21st November at 7pm alongside two other schools. It is a really exciting opportunity and the students are working so hard in preparation. We have already completed a workshop day led by theatre professional who worked with the company to develop our performance and give us tips to take back to the rehearsal room, it was a brilliant experience for us all. Rio Joubert, who left last year has returned to co-direct the performance and we are looking forward to show day and the chance to have a proper technical and dress rehearsal with theatre staff to prepare for the final performance.

You can buy tickets directly through the theatre. Their contact details are: Phone: 020 8369 5454 Website: www.artsdepot.co.uk Tickets cost: Full price: £9.75 // Concession: £7.75 MOVEMBER – Mr Raghuveer Movember began this Thursday and lasts for the entire month, with the aim of raising money to stop men dying too

young. The Movember Foundation work to prevent cancer and suicide in males and so far 13 male staff have

committed to growing a moustache over the month, including: Mr Raghuveer, Mr Clark, Mr Constantinou, Mr Barrow,

Mr McSherry, Mr Eilon, Mr Harris, Mr Wick, Ms Jones, Mr Ruffles, Mr Mustafa, Mr Rayner and Mr Savage. We have

joined together to become: Shaken, not stirred.

As growing a moustache isn’t the only desired method of participation, Miss Jones has also committed to walking or

running 60 kilometres over the month. That’s 60 kilometres for the 60 men we lose each hour, every hour. We are

also being supported by Ms Henry and Ms Ogbaselase, who have volunteered to organise cake sales via both

students and staff. It is turning out to be a real school effort, and we are only a day in!

So, parents and guardians, we would greatly appreciate some support in any of the following ways: share our team’s

fundraising page (which is below), donate if possible, and really try and help further improve the discussion

surrounding men’s health; it is a conversation that needs to start happening more.

https://moteam.co/shaven-not-stirred

Thank you reading, and hopefully donating! Stay tuned for updates, including: pictures during the month showing our progress!

PE DEPARTMENT UPDATE – Miss Alcock PE clubs are up and running again from next week. Please make note of what sport your child or children are

currently taking part in in their PE lessons. If they are on the rugby rotation they need to bring astro/football boots and

a gum shield to every lesson.

Cross Country

At the end of last term there were a number of students who

took part in the second Barnet Cross country race at Allianz

Park. All students that took part did exceptionally well, with the

year 7 boys winning the league match.

There were a number of outstanding performances from the

following: Rudy (1st) Benji B (3rd) Harry P (6th) Alex C (9th)

Barney H (10th). Roman (8th) Boston (9th) Victor (10th), Conor

(4th), Olive (2nd) Rose H (4th).

A number of the students have been selected to represent

Barnet in the LYC cross country. Well done all of you!

The Year 8 football team scored their fastest ever goal against SMSJ on Wednesday evening. From SMSJ’s kickoff

which they played back to their defender, Nathan M managed to close down and intercept a pass across their penalty

area to give him a 1 on 1 chance with the keeper, which he coolly slotted bottom left. The whole team ran over

bombarding Nathan in celebration, a cry of “unbelievable Jeff!” being heard by the referee. Less than 10 seconds on

the clock and The Archer were 1-0 up! The Archer continued to dominate, but couldn’t find another goal. The few

chances SMSJ created somehow managed to find the bottom corners and we were soon 3-1 down. An air of disbelief

was felt among the players. With half time closing in, a goal was desperately needed to salvage any hope of points in

the 2nd half. Up stepped Sonny, after some tidy football played down the left wing, the ball was played inside to

Sonny who cut inside and let rip a thunderous effort from 20 yards which sailed over the keeper. The second half was

about to draw to close but SMSJ, somehow, pegged a goal back immediately. A long range strike from their kick off

(after just conceding) bounced awkwardly over Hiva, out of his reach. A freak goal that saw us go in at half time 4-2

down.

Year 8 were still confident they could win the game, they showed great spirit in the second half. The back four of

Victor, Matthew, Henry and August made sure no ball was getting passed them and went on to keep a clean sheet.

Leaving the attackers to seal the deal with another 4 goals. 6-4 was the final score, which could have easily have

been more. Great resilience from the Year 8 team. Well done! The final game of the season is against Whitefield on

Monday.

HEAD OF YEAR UPDATES – Mr Naylor

Time to Reflect: ‘Life is a mirror and will reflect back to the thinker what he thinks into it.’ Ernest Holmes

Year 11 – Ms Humphrey Year 11 have returned re-energised from their half term, and ready for some additional learning! A huge thanks to the maths team for organising the first Woodhouse Tutoring session, which launched with great success on Wednesday. It was really impressive to see so many Year 11 students working in collaboration with Sixth Form students to complete maths papers together.

In equally impressive news - daylight saving has enabled growing numbers of students to arrive bright and early for morning interventions, with Drama and History students enjoying more 07.30am interventions. As the mock exams approach (30 days and counting) we will be emailing home a Year 11 Bulletin with key dates, intervention rotas, revision tips and other relevant information. This, we hope, will enable all parties to feel prepared for each week as we graduate through the GCSE journey. We have also published a list of all the exam boards on our website to assist with 6th form applications: http://thearcheracademy.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/External-exam-boards-2019.pdf

Year 11 Stars of the Week

Ahmad E for persevering with coursework

Danyal S for hard-work and maturity

Year 10 – Mr McSherry In September we were apprehensive and anxious about the Upper site, now we are flying! It was wonderful to share some teacher comments with the year group in the final assembly of the half-term. We celebrated together and the year group atmosphere was fantastic. Teachers came back to me with their highlights from the half-term and names of individuals, groups and classes that had impressed. As per I was very proud. What a joy it was to see so many Year 10 students as prize giving nominated by departments for either attainment or effort in their curriculum areas. A joy, not a surprise. Work Experience: Please continues to take the time to support your children in securing those places. If I could have all remaining forms in as soon as possible that would be great. Remember the ultimate deadline is Monday 3rd December. Finally, it is getting cold, isn’t it!? Unfortunately, the fall in temperature does not mean that your son/daughter is allowed to wear what they would should they attend a non-uniform school. Hoodies are the biggest item causing a fuss here. Hoodies should under no circumstances be worn under blazers. They have a woollen v-neck jumper that will serve the same purpose, which is part of the uniform. Please ensure your child wears a warm, dark in colour and plain jacket to school, and check thoroughly before they leave the house that they are not wearing any items that may be confiscated by staff. Have a lovely weekend.

Year 10 Stars of the Week

Rees L - For impressing across the board and taking his learning more serious this year. Well done!

Nik C - For impressing his form tutor with a much improved attitude to learning and organisation. Well done. Sophie DV - for thoroughly impressing Miss Ashraf with her art work. Some of the best she’s ever seen!

Year 9 – Mr Mustafa Year 9 have had an excellent start to their second half term as GCSE students and have thoroughly impressed their teachers with their attitude to learning. This was best exemplified in assembly this week where I had the joy of sharing quotes from their teachers about how they have tackled their first half term of GCSEs. The comments I received were overwhelming and just go to show how incredible Year 9 are! Please can all parents be reminded that the deposits for the PGL trip to Barton Hall, Devon are now due. This is £40 and payments can be made on parent pay. If any parents have any questions or concerns regarding this trip, please do get in contact.

I also wish to remind parents that the interview process for prefect positions is now complete and outcome letters are on their way to students via post. Appointing the prefects for this year was no easy task and I really hope that, regardless of outcome, all students learn from this experience and know that I am incredibly proud of everyone that applied. All students have been afforded the opportunity to get some feedback on their applications and I would ask parents for their support in this process. I hope all Archer families have a lovely weekend!

Year 9 Stars of the Week

Yaseen K for exceptional resilience and grit in Dance

Daisy S for excellent QMS across all subjects

Year 8 – Mr Savage We've continued our Life Long Learning on Morality this week with student revisiting and reflecting on their learning from last term and looking at the term ahead. Over the next few weeks students will discuss ethical dilemmas and then move onto ethical issues such as war, abortion and animal testing. This week I've been reading 'The Atlas of Happiness' by Helen Russell, who wrote 'The Year of Living Danishly.' I will be sharing some of these tips with Yr 8 over the next half term, in Friday's assembly as well as celebrating all of our success we are going to talk about Bhutan and their Gross National Happiness Index. I will be discussing with Yr 8 how we might create our own 'Gross Year Group Happiness Index' and perhaps even create a focus group for Yr 8 to work on this. There first priority will be to try and figure out a better acronym than GYGHI. On Monday I will finally be sending out letters for the Yr 8 residential Trip. Apologies for the delay, I received some exciting news which has enabled an excellent opportunity for the year group that has proved a much better financial deal which I think you will all appreciate. Have a lovely weekend.

Year 8 Stars of the Week

Yuval - Demonstrating the Archer Way

Caelyn - Positive interactions with students and staff

Year 7 – Ms Martin

We were absolutely delighted to take your children to Kingswood this week. We had an easy drive down arriving with some time to make beds and unpack. For some students this was the first time putting their bedsheets on and I was impressed with how students fostered a team spirit to get this task done. I have briefed children to go home and impress you with their new bed making skills!

We settled straight in to activities after dinner and then headed to the campfire where we had a group sing song before lights out. Thursday was a busy day, we had four birthdays to celebrate (Zara E, Charlie B, Susana R and Harry A) and a jam packed day of activities. Following dinner, we gathered together as a year group for some team challenges before heading to bed. On Friday we had time to squeeze in a couple of activities before grabbing some lunch and heading back to London. The staff and myself were thoroughly impressed with the positivity and resilience throughout the three days, particularly during bouts of rain! A huge thanks must go to the staff who participated in the trip and made it so special. Please do encourage your children to seek out their dormitory and activity leaders on Monday to say thanks. For those who did not come with us on the trip, Ms Wolfe had a great time leading them through a special project. Students did cross curricular research and put together some fantastic work. We look forward to sharing it with the rest of the year group in the coming week.

Year 7 Stars of the Week

Oscar G - excellent support of peers

Mia T - throwing herself in to activities Daniel J - for being supportive of a peer

Leah P - having a positive attitude throughout
