Monday – Setting Description

This week, we are going to build up to writing a retelling of part of the story.

To begin with, we are going to look at the contrasting settings in the story.

Can you remember the two main locations from the story?

Here are some pictures of where the Powhatan tribe lived. Can you describe what you can see? Think about the materials they used. Why did they set up near a river and a forest?

Here are some pictures of Fort James. How is it different? How is it similar? Why did they set up a wall around the outside? Why do you think they struggled to survive here?

Tuesday – Character Description

This week, we are going to build up to writing a retelling of part of the story.

Today, we are going to look at the character of Pocahontas.

Here are two different pictures of Pocahontas from the story. When do you think these pictures took place? How do you know?

Can you write a short description of Pocahontas?

Think about her appearance, what she looks like, what she is wearing. Remember all of the character profile work we did on appearance.

What was her personality like? How do you know? What actions did she do, to help her understand her personality?

How did she differ from the explorers?

Think about your sentence starters, not every sentence should start with Pocahontas. Use fronted adverbials such as:On her head, In the New World, When the settlers arrived,Helpfully, When she moved to England,

Wednesday – Past tense

This week, we are going to build up to writing a retelling of part of the story.

As this story takes place in the past, it needs to be written in the past tense. What do you know about the past tense?

Wednesday – Past tense

The majority of words that are in the past tense end in –ed. These are regular past tense words.

For example: I jumped into the swimming pool.

However, some words have different endings. These are called irregular past tense. Can you organise these words into the past and present tense?

Clue: Try saying them in a sentence, do they make sense?

Thursday – Adverbs

This week, we are going to build up to writing a retelling of part of the story.

What is a verb?

What is an adverb?

How do the 2 link together?

A verb is a doing word, it is something that you can do.

Here are some examples of some of the most common verbs.

An adverb adds something to the verb, to tell you how that action is being done. It can be written in different ways in a sentence.

For example: Usain Bolt ran quickly. Quickly, Usain Bolt ran down the track. Usain Bolt quickly ran away from his competitors.

Here are some examples of adverbs. Think about what actions you could do with these adverbs. What could you do noisily? What could you do kindly?

Can you put 5 of them into sentences?
