Academy 4-1-1 Volume 90 Academy 4-1-1 Monday, September 28, 2015 Volume 90 Our 103rd academic year is well underway and the feeling on campus has been overwhelmingly positive and exciting. We have started the year with over twenty more students than we had at this time last year. We have added some wonderful new teachers to our staff. Our program has been expanded in the areas of literacy and technology. In the Upper School we have introduced a new schedule that has resulted in more elective choices and co- curricular opportunities for students in grades 9- 12. Our global perspective continues to expand. Taken as a whole, it is quite clear that the school year has begun with great energy and purpose. When I addressed the faculty and staff prior to the opening of school I challenged them to “work with a purpose.” I explained that this means we all share the common goal of doing everything possible to maximize the educational experience for our students. We will continue to discuss precisely how this goal can be fully achieved; reaching an understanding about priorities, use of resources and the support provided through professional development. I am very proud of our teachers and staff. They continue to demonstrate a wonderful commitment to our success. Their positive attitude is inspiring. Our students have returned with tremendous focus. Our Lower School students demonstrate daily their obvious joy in learning. This is the very essence of our mission and it is what separates us in conversations about educational reform and direction. We determine success through the quality of the experience our students have, and while we use metrics when needed to provide valuable data points to check our progress, it is the “joy” of the experience that truly represents the mission driven goal of our work. Our Lower School is filled with such joy and I am proud of the work being done. In the Middle School we continue to provide our students with just the right blend of nurturing support and challenging outcomes that engender independence and age appropriate development. Middle School is a time of great change and our faculty is particularly attuned to this important dynamic. There are no limits in our Middle School and our program is designed to help students develop their full potential in all that they do. Our students are learning on all levels; academic, social and emotional. They are supported by a truly gifted faculty who has dedicated themselves professionally to this crucially important age group. The Upper School is the culminating experience of all that has come before. It is here that our students fully achieve the independence needed to be successful in college and beyond. There is a tremendous emphasis on student leadership. Our classes are student centered; always rigorous and demanding as we raise our expectations for excellence and teach our students to be accountable and give their very best effort. The new 10th period at the end of each day provides time for faculty office hours so that our students can develop authentic mentoring relationships with their teachers to help support and enrich their learning experience. We often need to take the approach of being counter-cultural as we challenge our students to elevate their value system and embrace a higher sense of achievement and purpose that will separate them as a group from the lowest common denominator that is often in evidence through the media examples that bombard them on a daily basis. We ask them to reach higher, and with the help of an extraordinary faculty, they do. So, it is with great pride that I lead us into our 103rd academic year. PA News

Dear Parents!

This year has gotten off to an amazing start! The weather cooperated beautifully and we had an

awesome turnout for our very first Back to the Books BBQ—about 150 people showed up to enjoy some

great food and even better company! Again, for all those who came out, we want to extend our thanks

for all of your support and for helping to build the feeling of community that makes LWA truly one of a

kind.

There is so much going on that we want to let you know about! First, by now you should have received

your Charleston Wrap Fundraising Packets. This is a VERY important fundraiser for the PA so please,

shop til you drop and encourage your friends and family to do the same! Once you register your child

online, you will get a student code and a link which you can place on Facebook or Instagram so family

and friends from around the world can support our school, and your child in particular! The sale ends

October 16.

Second, Homecoming is right around the corner, Saturday, October 17 from 11am-4pm to be

exact, and the PA NEEDS YOU! Please consider volunteering an hour or two of your time on that

day to help make Homecoming the fabulous even it always is! Your Class Chairs will be reaching out to

you with volunteer sign-up and food donation forms soon, so keep your eyes peeled for those emails

and please fill out and return the forms as soon as possible.

We hope your and your children’s school year has gotten off to a great start and we are so looking

forward to the wonderful year ahead. Thanks so much all!

Best,

Lindsay, Aida, Petra, Ella & Maria
