DESCRIPTION

Excellent Responses - Atticus says the only thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is one’s own thought or opinion. It doesn’t matter what everybody else thinks, you do what you think is right. He presses this onto Scout because he wants Scout to always feel confident with the decisions she makes. It doesn’t matter if you’re the only one who believes in the decision. The relationship to Atticus’ first quote and the one about Tom Robinson is that they both involve doing what you feel is right. Atticus feels that he can’t worship God if he doesn’t defend Tom Robinson. In God’s mind everyone is equal and that also applies for Atticus too. This can is one that determines the true character of a man.

Ch 11-14 Paragraph response

Atticus’ sage advice to Scout includes the remark: “Before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself.” What does he say is the only thing that doesn’t abide my majority rule? Why do you feel that he presses this onto Scout? Correlate a relationship between this and Atticus’ remark “This case, Tom Robinson’s case, is something that goes to the essence of a man’s conscience – Scout I couldn’t go to church and worship God if I didn’t try to help that man.”

Chapter 19-20 Dialectical JournalsQuestion - "No suh, not after she offered me a nickel the first time. I was glad to do it, Mr. Ewell didn't seem to help her none, and neither did the chillun, and I knowed she didn't have no nickels to spare." (pg. 256)Reflect"Yes suh. I felt right sorry for her, she seemed to try more'n the rest of 'em-""You felt sorry for her, you felt sorry for her?' Mr. Gilmore seemed ready to rise to the ceiling. The witness realized his mistake and shifted uncomfortably in the chair. But the damage was done. Below us, nobody liked Tom Robinson's answer. Mr Gilmer paused a long time to let it sink in." (pg. 264)Clarify - "I try to give 'em a reason, you see. It helps folks if they latch onto a reason. When I come to town, which is seldom, if I weave a little and drink out of this sack, folks say Dolphus Raymond's in the clutches of whiskey - that's why he wont change his ways. He can't help himself, that's why he lives the way he does." (pg. 268)Evaluate - "Gentleman, a court is no better than each of you sitting before me on this jury. A court is only as sound as its jury, and a jury is only as sound as the men who make it up. I am confident that you gentlemen will review without passion the evidence you have heard, come to a decision, and restore this defendant to his family. In the name of God, do your duty." (pg. 275)
