Midseason MVPAlex Ratcliff, North Surry’s senior QB, is having a season to rememberBy Eric LuskEditor

They don’t give out awards and trophies at the mid-point of the sea-son but there is little mistaking who our Monday Morning Quarterback Midseason Most Valuable Player would be if we had such an award —North Surry senior quarterback Alex Ratcliff.

It’s hard to believe now that head coach Brian Hampton was debat-ing hard in the spring and summer how much to use Ratcliff on offense. North Surry needed a quarterback to replace three-year starter Tanner Hi-att. Ratcliff fit the bill, but he also had been such a valuable asset on defense that Hampton was torn.

“I just don’t like playing my quar-terback on defense,” Hampton told Foothills Football magazine over the summer. “But Alex was so good for us defensively last year it is going to

be hard to keep him off the field.”All Ratcliff has done is turn into

the brightest offensive star in the area thus far. According to stats posted on NCPreps.com before Friday’s game action, Ratcliff had thrown from 745 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also had rushed for 672 yards and eight scores. His passing TD numbers rank him among the top 15 in the state, all classifications. His rushing numbers put him in the top 25, all classifica-tions.

He’ll surely climb up the stat ladders this week after the prolific performance he put in Friday at North Stokes. Unofficially, Ratcliff amassed 322 rushing yards and four more rushing touchdowns in the 63-28 triumph. He threw for 180 yards and completed three more TD strikes.

An MVP resume for sure, one deserving of a nice pat on the back heading into the second half of the season.

1The Battle of the Bridge series has been decidedly one-sided in recent

years. Starmount has won the last five games against Elkin, enjoying comfort-able margins in the last three meetings. Starmount erupted for 41 points in the second half Friday en route to a 55-6 tri-umph. The Rams whipped the Elks 59-0 a year ago and posted a 42-12 triumph in 2009. Elkin won in 2005 (34-14 fi-nal) and 2006 (34-10), though the ‘06 game officially went into the books as a double forfeit because both teams later reported using ineligible players.

2Starmount has been explosive in the third quarter the past couple

of weeks. The Rams scored 34 points in the third period against Elkin to turn a 14-6 halftime advantage into a 48-6 cushion. Starmount earned 27 points in the third quarter against Ashe County on Sept. 16 en route to a 51-14 triumph. Makes you wonder what coach Scott Johnson is telling his guys at the break?

3West Wilkes is solidifying itself as the top 1A team in the Mountain

Valley 1A/2A Conference. Since get-ting shut out at Wilkes Central 34-0 on Sept. 2, the Blackhawks are 3-0 — beat-ing Forbush (2A), East Wilkes (1A) and Ashe County (2A). Forbush managed 13 points, and West held on to win by 1 when a late field goal attempt sailed wide. East Wilkes and Ashe County couldn’t score on the ‘Hawks, who are now 4-2 overall, 3-1 in the MVAC.

4Don’t sleep on Forbush. The Fal-cons very easily could be riding a

three-game win streak into their game with Wilkes Central this Friday had that

field goal at West Wilkes stayed within the uprights. Forbush beat Alleghany and North Wilkes the past two weeks. There is some history between the Fal-cons and this week’s opponent. Wilkes Central coach Jeremy Funderburk was an assistant at Forbush before moving to Moravian Falls.

5It’s a huge step for a freshman to step on the field as a varsity con-

tributor, but some can do it and do it well. Count Forbush ninth-grader Zach Chambers in that group. Cham-bers could be in line for some type of all-conference honors if he can continue his recent string of strong performances. Chambers ripped off a 94-yard TD run at Alleghany on Friday and finished with 179 rushing yards in all. That’s a prom-ising sign for the future of the program.

6Mount Airy could still factor into the Northwest 1A/2A Conference

title picture. Yes, the Bears are behind the eight-ball after losing to West Stokes a few weeks ago. But coach Kelly Hold-er’s troops showed some second-half fortitude Friday night in overcoming Surry Central 38-33 on the road. That win keeps the Bears in the conversation. If they win out, beating North Surry in the process, and North Surry then beats West Stokes on Oct. 28, we could be looking at a three-way tie for first place -- and another conference trophy, albeit shared, for Mount Airy. Regardless, Fri-day’s triumph in Dobson keeps Mount Airy in line to be the top 1A seed from the league, even if the overall confer-ence trophy goes to another school.

First & 10Ten things to take away from week six of the football season

few months. It won’t be long until the N.C. High School Athletic Association will be discussing the next conference alignment for its various divisions. This is year three of the latest four-year con-ference set-up. It will be interesting to see if the state opts to keep our area schools in two 1A/2A split leagues or goes back to having a straight 1A conference and a straight 2A conference. Though we like the rivalry match-ups created by the current alignment, our vote would be to go back to the way it was pre-2009 and create separate conferences for the 1A schools and 2A schools. Teams like Wil-kes Central and Starmount aren’t getting much out of their current conference structure.

8Surry Central’s Wes Brown picked up a new nickname on Fri-

day night. Mount Airy coach Kelly Holder called Brown a “truck.” It was a total compliment. Brown was a load to bring down for sure, enjoying another 100-plus yard rushing performance and scoring a couple of TDs. On his second score, a 38-yard TD reception, Brown hurdled over one defender on his way to the end zone. That’s one athletic truck.

9It can be scary kicking off to Surry Central, and a lot of teams have

chosen not to do so this season. Wes Brown has great speed to match his im-posing size. Jared Dimmette is a burner as well, as evidenced by his 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first half against Mount Airy.

10It was a welcome site to see Star-mount alum Deana King back in

the Rams’ press box on Friday night keeping stats. King, who is the pub-lisher of the popular NCPreps.com Web site, had stepped away from her duties as Starmount’s long-time football stat-keeper to focus on her business. But she heeded the call to return to her press box post this past week for the remainder of the season. Her “retirement” didn’t last long, and folks in the Starmount com-

munity should be thankful. Few people love their school’s athletic programs —

and do so much to promote them — as Starmount’s Deana King.

Week Six In Focus

Circle your calendarsOct. 28 could be title night for both area conferencesBy Eric LuskEditor

Football coaches don’t like to look beyond their next game, and they certainly don’t want their players to overlook anyone to consider an opponent several weeks down the road.

But we in the sports media biz get that luxury of pon-dering what may happen in the more distant future, and we’re starting to see a scintil-lating scenario unfolding in the Foothills Football read-ership area -- we very well could have four undefeated teams heading into the final night of the regular season.

Starmount (6-0) and Wil-kes Central (5-0) have beaten all challengers thus far in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference. That hasn’t been that much of a surprise, con-sidering most league coaches and media pundits picked the Rams and Eagles to go 1-2, far outpacing everyone else.

Like last year, if things continue as expected, the Wilkes Central at Starmount showdown on the final night of the regular season, Oct. 28, will decide who gets this year’s MVAC championship trophy and the top 2A seed for the state playoffs.

In the Northwest 1A/2A Conference, though, many expected the first game of the conference schedule between West Stokes and Mount Airy on Sept. 16 to be the de facto championship game.

West Stokes won the contest 17-6 in the Granite City, but another prime con-tender has emerged that could shake things up.

North Surry has been on a tear through its first five games, averaging 45.8 points per game en route to five impressive victories.

On Friday, North Surry blitzed North

Stokes 63-28 behind anoth-er huge night from quarter-back Alex Ratcliff. That was the second time the Hounds had crossed into the 60s in scoring.

As the luck of the sched-uling draw would have it, West Stokes and North Surry play each on the final night of the regular season as well. Will it be title night in Toast as well as Boon-ville?

There are some road-blocks to this scenario hap-pening of course. Starmount still has to play an ever-im-proving West Wilkes team in Millers Creek on Oct. 7.

Both West Stokes and North Surry have to face a Surry Central team that gave Mount Airy all it could handle Friday. North Surry still has its annual show-down with Mount Airy on the docket, while West Stokes still has a pair of ri-valry games with its county neighbors. The West-South game will be in Walnut Creek.

But it would a compelling story line for sure if our last four remaining un-beatens can run the table heading into Oct. 28, setting up a couple of dramatic match-ups to close out the 2011 regular season.

Don’t just don’t ask the coaches from the four schools to talk about it just yet.

South stokes win streak reaches four game

It’s been a long time since South Stokes football has been this relevant this late in the season.

The Sauras, who won all of two games the past two years, improved to 4-1 with Friday night’s convincing vic-tory against Bishop McGuinness (28-6). South Stokes lost a nail-biter to start the season against West Wilkes.

That followed with wins against North Wilkes and Alleghany of the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference and then a couple of Northwest victo-ries against North Stokes and Bishop.

We only peeked back as far as the year 2000, but South Stokes has not had a winning season over the past 11 years. Their best season during that stretch was 2002, when the Sauras went 5-7 overall and 3-5 in old North-west 1A Conference.

South Stokes won four games in 2007 and was 3-5 in conference action. There have been two 1-11 campaigns and one 1-10 season since 2000, as well as a trio of two-win records.

The back half of South Stokes’ schedule this season should prove much stiffer than the first half, start-ing with Friday’s home game against unbeaten North Surry. The Sauras still have to tangle with East Surry, West Stokes, Mount Airy and Surry Central as well.

South Stokes year-by-year record since 20002011 4-1 overall, 2-0 Northwest 1A/2A2010 1-10 overall, 0-7 Northwest 1A/2A2009 0-10 overall, 0-7 Northwest 1A/2A2008 3-9 overall, 2-6 Northwest 1A2007 4-8 overall, 3-5 Northwest 1A2006 2-10 overall, 2-6 Northwest 1A2005 2-10 overall, 1-7 Northwest 1A2004 3-9 overall, 2-6 Northwest 1A2003 1-11 overall, 1-7 Northwest 1A2002 5-7 overall, 3-5 Northwest 1A2001 1-11 overall, 1-7 Northwest 1A2000 2-9 overall, 0-6 Mid-State 2A

Golden Eagles eager to Tackle Cancer

Surry Central gave a number of cancer survivors a chance to take a bow during halftime of Friday’s game against Mount Airy.

The Golden Eagles’ match-up with the Granite Bears was dubbed “Tack-le Cancer” night, organized by Surry Central High’s HOSA Club.

The club used the venue to raise money for the fight against cancer and to provide information to the com-munity about cancer, especially in the area of early detection.

The cancer survivors recognized included some who had finished treat-ment as recently as a year ago, while others had been cancer free for de-cades.

“The goal is to educate the public about early detection and prevention,” Dena Cave, Surry Central‘s HOSA adviser, told The Mount Airy News last week. “We just want to keep the awareness factor out there in front of everybody … They thought the biggest audience would be at a ball game. We can really get the attention of a lot of people.”

The football program got into the spirit of things as well. Surry Central players wore pink shoelaces, and the school logo at midfield was painted pink.

The Web site, which we here at Monday Morning Quarterback stum-bled upon accidentally while doing some research, is a valuable tool. It has conference standings for each league for each year starting with 2000, plus scores from all of the state champion-ship games played over the past 10 sea-sons.

Starmount wins JV version of the Battle of the Bridge with Elkin

Starmount won Thursday’s JV ver-sion of the Battle of the Bridge against

Elkin, defeating the Buckin’ Elks 44-14 at Grissom Stadium.

The Rams are the defending JV champions from the MVAC and are having another solid season thus far.

In other JV action from last Thursday, Ashe County topped West Wilkes 48-14, North Wilkes rolled past East Wilkes 38-14 and West Stokes beat East Surry 32-14.

North Wilkes’ JV program has won five games thus far, which bodes well for the future of their varsity program.

Super SevenUpcoming match-ups that could decide titles, playoff spotsBy Eric LuskEditor

In our Foothills Football preseason preview magazine, we listed “Seven Games That Could Make A Difference” featuring what we believed to be the most compelling match-ups that awaited fans.

Now that the season has crossed the midway point and conference races are starting to come into clearer focus, here is a revised list of seven games that could decide play-off and conference champi-onship fortunes. One of them happens this Friday. Two loom on the final night of the regular season.

Surry Central at West Stokes (Sept. 30) — One of the juiciest match-ups on this Friday’s menu. The Golden Eagles’ “hambone” attack will face arguably the top de-fense in the Northwest 1A/2A Conference. West Stokes may need to score more than 17 points (what they man-aged against Mount Airy and East Surry) to beat this team and keep its unbeaten record intact.

Starmount at West Wilkes (Oct. 7) — The Rams have been picking off Mountain Valley 1A/2A Confer-ence opponents right and left like the past couple of seasons. West Wilkes, though, has been solid since losing to Wilkes Central on the road in early

September. If there is a trap game left for Starmount this could be it.

Mount Airy at North Surry (Oct. 7) — Last year’s game in the Granite City drew an overflow crowd on both sides, but the Bears had the most to cheer about, stifling the Greyhounds 37-7. At least right now, unbeaten North

Surry appears to be the fa-vorite. Mount Airy could get back into the conference title picture with a victory.

North Surry at Surry Central (Oct. 14) — Surry Central put up 28 points on the Greyhounds last season on Toast, but allowed 49. This meeting could be an-other shootout with North-west 1A/2A championship and state playoff implica-tions.

Ashe County at For-bush (Oct. 21) — It’s look-ing like Starmount and Wil-kes Central will finish first and second (not necessarily in that order) among the 2A teams in the MVAC. This meeting in East Bend could decide the No. 3 team from the league for the state tour-nament.

West Stokes at North Surry (Oct. 28) — As dis-cussed in another story in this week’s issue, this meet-ing on the final night of the regular season could be for all the marbles in the North-west 1A/2A Conference.

Wilkes Central at Starmount (Oct. 28) — It’s not clear if schedule-makers did this intentionally or not, but having the Eagles and Rams play on the final night of the regular season has decided the conference title the past couple of seasons. That is likely to be the case

Photo by Eric LuskSurry Central and Mount Airy both have some big games looming on their schedules -- games that could get them back into the conference title conversation.

Week Six Game Coverage

By Eric LuskEditor

Starmount’s Christian Hurt helped put the hurt on Elkin, earning MVP status in the Rams’ 55-6 Battle of the Bridge win Friday night.

Starmount led the game just 14-6 at the half but notched three touchdowns in the first 3:31 of the third quarter to pull away. Hurt, a senior quarterback and defensive back, played a key role in all three scores.

Hurt returned the second half kickoff 93 yards to the Elkin 1. One play later, Chaston Martin plowed over for the touchdown. After an Elkin fumble, Hurt hit Connor Vanhoy with 36-yard touch-down pass to push the lead to 28-6. Less than two minutes later, following an Elkin punt, Hurt sprinted 41 yards for a score.

Martin found the end zone twice more in the third quarter, on runs of 3 and 56 yards, and Sergio Sarinara notched his first TD of the season in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

The Rams improved to 6-0 overall, 4-0 in the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Con-ference and earned their fifth-straight win in the Battle of the Bridge series. Elkin, coming off a bye week, dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the MVAC. Starmount has not been beaten in the regular season since the 2009 season. The Rams have won 29 consecutive conference games, dating back to 2007.

Elkin did its best to hang tough as long as it could. Fondae McDaniel put Star-mount on the board quickly in the open-ing period, rushing in from the 7. But the Rams didn’t score again in the period. Martin’s 25-yard jaunt with 11:09 left in the half made the score 14-0, but Star-mount couldn’t build on its lead.

Elkin put together its best drive of the night late in the second period, with Nick Phillips eventually going over from the 4 to end the shutout. The Elks were

held scoreless in last year’s Battle of the Bridge.

Starmount finished with 423 rush-ing yards on the night. Martin (10-106 yards) and Brian King (4-104 yards) both crossed the century mark. McDaniel had 51 yards on seven carries before leaving the game with an injury.

Hurt completed two of three passes for 54 yards. Starmount’s defense, which held Ashe County to 14 points last week, gave up only 142 total yards.

Phillips (8-38 yards) was Elkin’s lead-ing rusher. Quarterback Josh Strickland completed 11-of-23 passes for 67 yards. Sam Lane hauled in five catches for 49 yards.

Starmount will have a bye from game action next Friday night. The Rams have four regular season games remaining,

against West Wilkes, North Wilkes, Al-leghany and Wilkes Central. Elkin will return home next Friday, hosting West Wilkes.

Elkin last beat Starmount on the field during the 2006 season. But that game, a 34-10 Elks victory at Grissom Stadium, is now officially considered a double-for-feit since both teams later reported using ineligible players. The Elks topped the Rams 34-14 in 2005.

This is the first year that the Battle of the Bridge game has been played with no bridge. The iconic trestle bridge that con-nected Elkin and Jonesville for decades was brought down over the past year, with the job finishing up this past spring and summer. The game’s name – crafted by WIFM radio personality Joel Hooper – lives on.

KING — It was just another typical night for the West Stokes defense.

Except the Wildcats were playing under the Saturday night lights, and for the first time, they were playing as the clear favorite in the Northwest 1A/2A after last week’s huge victory at five-time reigning conference champion Mount Airy.

Other than that, it was business as usual as the Wildcats’ defense dominated play in a 17-7 victory against East Surry in King.

West Stokes (6-0 overall, 2-0 Northwest 1A/2A) held its opponent in single-digits for the fourth time in six games this season and gave up just 119 yards total offense in the game.

“As an offensive coordinator, I’m in a great position because I can take chances,” West Stokes coach Jimmy Upchurch said. “Our defense is playing so well that even if we’re not clicking on offense, I have so much faith in our defense that we can rely on them to make big plays for us. It allows me to do more things that I want to do on offense.”

East Surry (0-5, 0-2) stayed close with the favored Wildcats, only trailing 3-0 at halftime. West Stokes extended its lead on the first play of the second half when quarterback Austin Fleming barreled through the line on a keeper and raced down the field for a 69-yard touchdown. Fleming finished the game with 100 yards rushing on 15 carries.

After forcing a punt on the Cardinals next possession, West Stokes appeared to put the game away when running back Dalton Boles scored on an option run late in the third quarter. Boles took the pitch on left sideline, stopped just before running out of bounds, followed his blocks across the field and outran the Cardinals’ defense for the 35-yard

touchdown run.But East Surry had an answer. On the first play of its next possession,

Cardinal quarterback Jon Dickenson connected with Jeremy Gilley on a 61-yard touchdown completion that cut the Wildcats lead to 10 with 2:39 to play in the third quarter.

West Stokes defense took over from there, stopping the Cardinals on their final two drives of the game.

All in all, Upchurch was satisfied with how his team responded after last week’s emotional victory at Mount Airy.

“I thought we played a little sluggish tonight, maybe not with the same kind of enthusiasm that you would play with on a Friday night,” Upchurch said. “I think we played just well enough to win. If you lose (last week), then how are they going to respond, if you win, how are they going to respond. A win is a win

and I’m just happy to get it.”

Turning point of the game — After West Stokes exploded out of halftime with a touchdown run on its first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, East Surry needed an answer. The Cardinals converted a 3rd-and-long on their first set of downs and were facing a 3rd-and-2 at its own 43-yard line. Darryl Little and Zach Manley knocked the Cardinals’ linemen backward and swarmed over running back Rayshawn Moore and stopped him for a 2-yard loss and forced a punt. West Stokes scored on its next offensive possession.

It was over when — West Stokes’ Tyler Bullard sacked Dickensen on 3rd-and-25 with 4:32 remaining in the game and the Wildcats nursing a 10-point lead.

DANBURY – North Surry seniors Alex Ratcliff and Jason King racked up 432 yards on the ground in a 63-28 win over North Stokes on Friday night.

Ratcliff, the Greyhounds’ starting quarterback, had a career high of 322 yards on 14 carries with four touchdowns, while King picked up 110 yards on 14 carries with two touchdowns. Ratcliff also had three touchdowns through the air on 7-13 passing for 180 yards.

North Surry (5-0, 2-0 Northwest) got off to the start it wanted, with a six-play drive that ended with a 11-yard touchdown run by Ratcliff just two minutes into the game to put the Hounds up 7-0 (kick good).

North Stokes (3-3, 0-2) responded with a 40-yard pass play from quarterback Garrett Wood to TJ Sonafrank to tie the game at 7-7 (kick good).

Late in the first quarter — with the score still knotted at seven — Ratcliff used two plays to cover 72 yards and punched it in from 24 yards out to put the Greyhounds up 14-7 at the end of the first quarter (kick good).

“Our goal is to put up 14 points every quarter and we got off to the right start and ended up doing just that tonight,” said North Surry head coach Brian Hampton.

Early in the second quarter, Ratcliff would make one of his few mistakes this season when he fumbled the ball as he was tackled. North Stokes’ Austin Mabe recovered the miscue, giving the Vikings the ball at North Surry’s 26 yard line. Sonafrank tied the score two plays later on a 26-yard run down the right sideline (kick good).

On the Greyhounds’ very next possession Ratcliff found wideout Jacob Pelfrey on a 22-yard slant to put the Greyhounds up 21-14 (kick good). North Stokes had to punt the ball back

to the Greyhounds just before the half giving Ratcliff and the Greyhounds another opportunity.

This time Ratcliff found Chase Gough in the back of the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown hook up to give North Surry a 28-14 lead going in the break (kick good).

After a four and out by North Stokes to start the half, Ratcliff took a quarterback keeper down the middle of the field for a 71 yard scamper to give the Hounds a 35-14 advantage (kick good). After a North Surry four and out, North Stokes’ Wood found Dustin Smith over the middle for a 24 touchdown pass to cut the lead to 35-20 (2-point conversion no good).

North Stokes head coach Jason Lippard seemed to think his team had a good shot of rallying in the second half. “We made a lot of mental mistakes in the second half and we wore down. I thought we had a good chance coming into the second half, but we just didn’t execute when we needed to.”

North Surry didn’t give North Stokes anytime to gain momentum as Ratcliff hooked up with Pelfrey once more for a 62 yard touchdown. According to NCPreps.com, Pelfrey came into the game leading the state with 11 receiving touchdowns. Pelfrey added to his totals with two more touchdowns on three catches for 104 yards.

Just one minute later — after Jesse Robinson picked off Wood and returned it to the North Stokes 20 yard line — King took the first handoff to the end zone to put the Hounds up 49-20 entering the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter things begun to get chippy with penalty flags flying everywhere. The game saw 39 total penalties with 15 being personal fouls. A lot of North Stokes miscues were due to a stout second half defense by North Surry. The Greyhounds recorded seven sacks and two interceptions in the second half.

“We made some changes to our secondary this week and that paid off tonight in a big way,” added Hampton.

Senior lineman Cory Cain recorded a team high four sacks on the night, though the second half defensive performance was key in the win.

“We had a good week of practice preparing for their offense, and we got around the outside early in the second half and set the tone.”

North Surry added two more scores — one each from Ratcliff (81 yards) and King (13 yards).Dillon Rogers added a late score for North Stokes.

Rogers ended the night with 17 carries for 117 yards and a touchdown.

DOBSON — Ty Simmons found three different ways to score, and Mount Airy found a way to rally past Surry Central 38-33 in a hard-fought Northwest 1A/2A Conference football clash Friday night.

Simmons reached the end zone with a rush, a pass reception and with a defensive return after intercepting a Surry Central pitch-out. His “pick-six” play with 7:35 left in the fourth quarter turned out to be the game clincher.

Mount Airy defensive end Julius Coram blew up a Golden Eagles option play heading to the left side of the field. Coram put a hard lick on quarterback Jesse Martin and his option pitch sailed errantly into the air. Simmons caught the ball in stride and raced 50 yards to the end zone, with no one even coming close to stopping him. The TD put the Granite Bears ahead 38-20 – enough of a cushion to weather two late Surry Central scores.

“I’ve got to give that play completely to Julius, our defensive end,” Simmons said after the game. “The quarterback didn’t even see me, so I’ve got to give that whole play to Julius. He caused all of that and I just got lucky. He made that play.”

Mount Airy (4-2 overall, 1-1 Northwest) bounces back into the win column after falling to West Stokes 7-6 at home last week. While the Granite Bears’ run of 30+ conference victories in a row came to an end against the Wildcats, they still maintained their dominance over Surry Central. Mount Airy has not lost to the Eagles since the late 1990s.

“I’m happy to get the W. Mentally it was humongous, it really was,” Mount Airy coach Kelly Holder said. “We really worried about Surry Central and

rightly so. They are pretty good.”Turns out the Bears were pretty good

too on Friday. Simmons scored his first two touchdowns in the opening half, one on a 15-yard run and the other on a 34-yard pass from Austin Taylor. Dylan Wright booted both extra points and later in the half added a 28-yard field

goal.Yet Surry Central led at the break

20-17. Bruising running back Wes Brown was a big reason. The junior, who finished with 135 rushing yards, carried over from the four in the first quarter to give the Eagles a 13-7 lead. Jared Dimmette had an 85-yard kickoff return and Martin turned a keeper into a 12-yard touchdown run to complete the first-half scoring.

“(Brown) is a truck,” Holder said. “He is just good. I mean he just punished us early. He is tough. Can anybody stop them?”

Surry Central took the opening kickoff in the third quarter and put together another nice drive, converting one fourth down play. A 29-yard burst through the middle by Martin set the Eagles up with first down at the Mount Airy 13.

Kashous Martin went over the 100-yard mark against the Golden Eagles. One 40-yard burst set up a touchdown.

But the Bears held, and Surry Central missed wide on a 35-yard field goal attempt.

Mount Airy responded with a 10-play, 80-yard march for the go-ahead touchdown. Taylor had a couple of key runs, and Kashous Martin (105 yards rushing) slashed for 40 yards on the eighth play. Taylor eventually plunged in from the six-inch line to give the Bears a 24-20 lead.

Surry Central went three-and-out, and the Bears responded with an eight-play, 59-yard series that resulted in a 9-yard TD pass from Taylor to Garrett Vanhoy. Simmons’ 50-yard pitch-out, pick-off play followed next.

“It was good to see that we put some points on the board and had some success,” Holder said.

Conference Reports Northwest 1A/2A

Alex Ratcliff (North Surry): Mr. Prolific was at it again Friday night, rushing for a career high 322 yards on 14 carries and scoring four touchdowns on the ground. His final TD went for 81 yards. His other touchdowns on the ground covered 11, 24 and 71 yards. Ratcliff, the Greyhounds’ senior starting quarterback, also threw three TD passes in North Surry’s 63-point outburst at North Stokes. He finished 7-of-13 through the air for 180 yards.

Jason King (North Surry): Added another 110 rushing yards to the Greyhounds’ ledger. King found the end zone twice on runs of 20 and 13 yards in the second half.

Jacob Pelfrey (North Surry): Senior wide receiver caught a pair of touchdown passes on plays covering 22 and 62 yards.

Garrett Wood (North Stokes): Threw a touchdown pass in each half to keep the Vikings in contention as long as they could.

Dillon Rogers (North Stokes): The Vikings’ spread offense is more than just a pass-happy attack. Rogers hit the century mark in rushing yards, finishing with 117 yards on 17 carries. He scored one touchdown on a rush of 2 yards in the fourth quarter.

T.J. Sonafrank (North Stokes): Caught Wood’s first TD toss, which covered 40 yards, and rushed for a score from 26 yards away. His second touchdown tied the game at 14 early in the second quarter.

Ty Simmons (Mount Airy): Scored a rushing touchdowns (15 yards), caught a touchdown pass (24 yards) and snatched a Surry Central option pitch out of thin air, returning it 50 yards for a score. Simmons’ third touchdown turned out to be the game-clincher, helping the Bears hang on despite being outscored 13-0 in the final period.

Simmons finished with 73 rushing yards. Austin Taylor (Mount Airy): Quarterbacked

the Granite Bears to a hard-fought comeback victory at surging Surry Central. Taylor threw a pair of touchdown passes, the first to Simmons and the second to Garret Vanhoy from 10 yards out in the third period. Taylor finished 5-for-10 for 109 yards. He also rushed for 76 yards on 10 totes, and plunged into the end zone from the 1-yard line.

Dylan Wright (Mount Airy): Booted five extra points and hit a 28-yard field goal in the Bears’ victory.

Kashous Martin (Mount Airy): Rushed for 118 yards on 14 carries, including one big gainer to the Surry Central 1 that set up Taylor’s third-quarter touchdown rush.

Wes Brown (Surry Central): Mount Airy coach Kelly Holder called the junior halfback a “truck” -- he was a load to bring down all night, earning 135 yards on the ground. Brown scored on a 4-yard run in the opening half and then took a pass from Jesse Martin and turned it into a 38-yard scoring play (leaping over a defender on his way to the end zone).

Jesse Martin (Surry Central): Did a solid job of running the Eagles’ option offense, scoring on a 12-yard run in the first half and sneaking in from the 1 in the fourth quarter. He also had the big TD toss to Brown.

Jared Dimmette (Surry Central): Returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown in the opening half -- not the first time he has taken a kick back for a score in his career.

South Stokes Defense: Give the Sauras’ stopping unit a collective game ball for holding Bishop McGuinness to 91 yards rushing and zero yards passing -- a big reason South Stokes will

take a four-game winning streak into this Friday’s game.

Jacquan Martin (South Stokes): Enjoyed a career night in the Sauras backfield, rushing for 190 yards and a touchdown. He gave a game ball to his offensive line in a story published in the Winston-Salem Journal this weekend. “I couldn’t do it without my line,” Martin told the Journal. “They blocked really well for me and opened up a lot of holes.”

Zack Singleton (South Stokes): Had a big night on both sides of the ball, catching a touchdown pass, rushing for a score and finishing as one of the team’s leading tacklers (eight solos, eight assists).

Dustin Holder (East Surry): Helped the Cardinals’ cause with some booming punts. He punted eight times in all, averaging nearly 40 yards per boot, with a long of 46.

Austin Fleming (West Stokes): Hit triple digits in rushing yards (109) and passing yards (146) in the Wildcats’ grind-it-out win against East Surry on Saturday. Fleming broke things open with a 69-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half.

Mason Edwards and Jeremy Gilley (East Surry): Broke up West Stokes’ shutout bid by connecting on a 60-yard touchdown pass with 2:39 left in the game.

West Stokes Defense: Held its fourth opponent under 10 points for the season by allowing just one score -- late in the fourth quarter -- against East Surry. Tyler Bullard (10 tackles), Brandon Helvey (10 tackles, 1 sack), Brandon Poulsen (9 tackles, 2 tackles for loss) and Tyler Bennett (four tackles, two sacks) were among the defensive leaders.

Zach Chambers (Forbush): One of a handful of freshmen who has been playing at the varsity level since opening week, Chambers rushed for 179 yards on 14 carries at Alleghany on Friday. Chambers ripped off a 94-yard TD run, helping the Falcons win their second in a row.

Brittan Baity (Forbush): Gave the Falcons a second 100-yard rusher Friday, burning the turf for 175 yards on 15 totes.

Casey Evans (Forbush): Led the Falcons with 10 tackles and a had a scoop-and-score touchdown after recovering an Alleghany fumble.

Ethan Adams, Dillon Gray, Alvin Sales (East Wilkes): Adams blocked a North Wilkes field goal attempt in the final minutes, helping preserve the Cardinals’ 1-point lead. Gray pounced on the loose ball. East won 14-13, with Sales blocking North Wilkes’ second PAT attempt.

Matthew Shepherd (North Wilkes): Rushed for 124 yards in the Vikings’ game against East Wilkes. He scored on a 65-yard burst in the fourth quarter.

Dustyn Vernon (East Wilkes): Filling in for injured teammates in the offensive backfield, Vernon rushed for 155 yards and a touchdown.

Tyler Woods (West Wilkes): Rushed for three touchdowns and enjoyed another 100-plus yard effort in Friday’s 31-0 win against Ashe County. Woods’ scoring plays covered 10, 62 and 9 yards.

West Wilkes Defense: The Blackhawks earned their second straight shutout against a conference opponent. Since giving up 34 points to undefeated Wilkes Central on Sept. 2, the Blackhawks stopping unit has allowed just 13 points through 12 quarters of work. West Wilkes

recovered three fumbles in the first half and blocked an Ashe field goal attempt. The ‘Hawks preserved the shutout with a couple of stands inside the red zone in the second half.

Ryan Billings (Alleghany): Hauled in 159 yards in receptions in the Trojans’ loss to Forbush on Friday.

Grant Caudill (Alleghany): Had a big night throwing the ball for the Trojans, amassing 235 yards. “We couldn’t stop them,” Forbush coach Chris Johnson said. “It looks like it was a blowout, but the game was really much closer.”

Chaston Martin (Starmount): Rushed for four touchdowns and 106 total yards in the Rams’ lopsided win over Elkin. Martin found the end zone from 25 yards out in the second quarter, then scored on runs of 1, 3 and 56 yards in the third period.

Christian Hurt (Starmount): Earned Battle of the Bridge MVP status following a flurry of big plays in the decisive third quarter. Hurt returned the second half kickoff 93 yards to set up one of Martin’s TDs. He later threw a 36-yard TD pass to Connor Vanhoy and sprinted for a 41-yard touchdown.

Brian King (Starmount): Picked up 104 rushing yards in the Rams’ dominant performance – one of two Starmount players to break the century mark on the night.

Nick Phillips (Elkin): Helped the Elks get rid of the goose egg on the scoreboard with a 4-yard TD run in the second quarter. Phillips finished as Elkin’s leading rusher.
