Cornell Notes

Topic/Title: Cerebral (Brain) Hemispheres

Cerebral Hemispheres

• Cerebral = brain• Right and Left hemisphere

(halves)• Each hemisphere appears to be

specialized for some behaviors. – Left: language, math, logic, and

organization– Right: face recognition, visual

images, music, and creativityLeft Right

Left vs. Right Hemispheres

• The right side of the brain controls muscles on the left side of the body • The left side of the brain controls

muscles on the right side of the body.–Therefore, damage to one side of the

brain will affect the opposite side of the body.

Corpus callosum • Thick band of

fibers that connects the two hemispheres• This structure is

how the hemispheres communicate with each other

• Mrs. Thompson had a stroke in one hemisphere of her brain. After the stroke, the left side of her face was droopy, she had trouble speaking and had a limp in her left leg. Which hemisphere did the stroke occur?

Answer:

• The stroke occurred in the right cerebral hemisphere.

• We know this because the right cerebral hemisphere controls the left side of the body and it was her left side that was damaged

• Tim was riding his bike when a car failed to obey a stop sign and hit him. This accident resulted in brain damage. One of the consequences was that Tim had a hard time recognizing people’s faces, even if he had known someone a long time. Which hemisphere did Tim have brain damage?

Answer:

• The stroke occurred in the right cerebral hemisphere.

• The right cerebral hemisphere is known to be responsible for face recognition, music, creativity and visual images.
