Annual Survey Each year we ask students, parents/carers, support staff and teachers what they think about our school: what we are doing well, what we could improve, and any ideas for the future of the school. The survey is important, because these views help us develop our future strategy. All responses are anonymous and those responding cannot be identified from the information provided. Results of the survey will be published on our website and in Vandyke Voice. We are asking all parents and carers to take part in the survey by completing and returning the online questionnaire by Friday 25th January 2019. The survey is easy to access and takes only a few minutes to complete. Smile Week 2018 The 2018 Vandyke Upper School ‘Smile Malawi Charity Week’ was, once again, a huge success with over £3000 being raised in an action packed week. The Senior Student Team, a huge number of Sixth Form students and staff helped to organise and run an eclectic mix of fundraising activities. As well as being fun, they served to raise the awareness of the whole school community to the plight of ‘street kids’ in Malawi. Members of the World Challenge Team who visited the orphanage in Malawi during the summer to complete a community action project, spoke movingly about their experience is assemblies presented to the whole school. There was a fancy dress theme for each day starting with ‘Movie star Monday’ and finishing with ‘Freedom Friday’! Lunchtime activities included a memorable ‘Lip Synch Battle’ where the History department’s superbly entertaining perfor-mance of Taylor Swift’s “Shake it off” won the day, against strong competition from the English Department’s heroic

attempt to rejuvenate a ‘mash up’ of Abba’s greatest hits. The now legendary Vandyke Staff Dance Troupe produced a “show stopping” version of “The Shark” which on the ‘clapometer’ at least, had the edge on the Sixth Form Dance Troupe, even if Craig Revel Horwood might have had some-thing to say about its chaotic presentation! Other big money raisers were the Krispy Kreme donut day and the Staff Celebrity Football Match that, according to Mr Carroll, “show-cased some of the best football seen in Smile history!” He is, however, a Manchester United supporter so not always the best judge of such things! Director of Sixth Form, Mr Downey, was delighted with the achievements of the Sixth Form students. “They worked so hard, planned so well and delivered some excellent fundraising events. To raise such a large amount of money in such a short period of time is a fantastic achievement. We are really proud of all of them.” He also paid tribute to the large number of staff who joined in

throughout the week. “It was a really great to see so many staff who were willing to contribute in all sorts of ways. It was a special atmosphere, staff and students having fun together, raising money for a very important cause and reflecting on important world issues. Just a truly great week and one which epitomised the huge strengths of our school community.”

Dan Wright’s Design on our School

Christmas Card At Vandyke we are always pleased to showcase our students’ work and Christmas always proves a great opportunity to highlight their artistic talents. This year the Vandyke Christmas card was designed by Year 10 student, Dan Wright, and everyone is very pleased with the end result. Dan's photography teacher, Mr Bennett, said, "Dan created this striking image after lots of hard work and experimentation. A lot of effort went into getting a specific part of the feather in focus and he's lit the

photograph really well to show off the colours in those out of focus areas. The com-position conveys a lovely sense of movement. Dan made some minor tweaks in Photoshop before calling the image finished." Dan said, “Photography is a favourite subject of mine. The creativity involved is complex and interesting. It’s a lesson where you can work on what you enjoy and mix your own ideas into it.”
