Who is author Candice Carty-Williams?

I remember teaching Candice many manyyears ago at a school in Lewisham. I recognise her personality in her writing and on twitter. I take absolutely no credit for her success but having read Queenie and seen how successful she is, it is good to know that dreams can be achieved. Queenie haswon lots of awards and it is very funny and sad but it has some adult themes, definitely one for sixth formers. Her tenacity and determination in the face of many challenges is still worth all students reading about – Click here to find out more about Candice.Ms Scott

The University for the Creative Arts (UCA) digital engagement opportunities

The University for the Creative Arts (UCA) would like to extend its support to schools and colleges during these difficult times to help students adapt to this changing educational landscape. Ordinarily we would be hosting school groups on campus and running workshops in schools. As this is not possible at the moment we have created a suite of digital resources to provide support for schools.

Digital engagement opportunities for you and your students:

The UCA Gradshow: Welcome to our first ever Online Graduation Show. Here is where you’ll find astonishing work by our 2020 graduates. There’s more than 900 pieces of amazing work on display in our Online Graduation Show across dozens of courses. It offers a glimpse into the future creative industries and the journey of student community, so be sure to check it out and share with others interested to see where their talents can take them!

UCA Workshops: Online delivery of UCA workshops are happening! All workshops are delivered by our specialist Creative Workshop Tutors and Student Ambassadors, and where possible, include a creative careers talk. Creative workshops give young people the opportunity to enhance their portfolio, develop creative thinking and skills, and explore disciplines in greater depth. Check out these opportunities here. You can make a booking request and find out further information via our get in touch form.

UCA Virtual Open Days: We know you can’t come and visit us right now, so instead we’ve created a ‘campus to couch’ online experience just for you to browse through. UCA is home to some of the UK’s finest state of the art facilities. Our dedicated student spaces are 100% creative, packed with bespoke studios, darkrooms, kilns, cinemas, lecture theatres, libraries, workshops and more. Take the tour. As soon as we are able to host school groups back on campus we will let you know.

Get Creative Campaign: At UCA, we believe all young people should have the opportunity to contribute to the culture in which they live. Check out the Get Creative Campaign with helpful workshop videos and digital resources available to you. If you belong to a KaMCOP school make sure to check out our weekly art competitions and additional resources.

UCA Live: We run bi-weekly webinar live events on a range of topics, these are open to applicants and prospective students. These themed live events are designed to help students explore a chosen topic in more detail and are usually a great insight into the creative industry. Live events are constantly updated each month so be sure to check out the UCA Live website.

World Afro Day: Top Ten Model Competition

Entry dates May 29th to July 17th (first valid 1000 entries only). The Top Ten Model Competition, will be an exciting way to celebrate World Afro Day, 15th September 2020. Afro hair is not often considered beautiful by the modelling industry and there is still a stigma in society but we want to turn this negative around.

If your youngsters are bored at home and looking for inspiration, then get them to enter our competition. Tell us their hair story and why they should be picked as a World Afro Day, Top Ten Model. This is not about breaking into modelling but for ordinary young people to feel empowered, about Afro hair. This is a body positive experience, with no height and size restrictions. Even their friends, without Afro hair, can join in and show support, through a “Cheerleader Clip.” Click here to find out more
