Welcome to week 3 We have our parent/teacher meetings on Tuesday afternoon from 3.15 - 6.00pm. Last chance to make a booking with a teacher on Tuesday morning. Sausage sizzle available for all. Some of our students will be competing in the vocal section at Gympie Eisteddfod on Thursday 1 August and we wish them all the best. can see what support may be offered to you. As Mary Valley SC is a significant part of the local community it is important that we maintain our standards and that students wear their uniform correctly and with pride. Our policies are all available on our School Website and can be provided to parent/caregivers in hard copy on request. All students have the right to learn and all teachers the right to teach without this being disrupted by students choosing not to do the right thing. I believe that the vast majority of students are doing the right thing at school and I applaud them for their efforts. Recent report card information shows that many students are achieving great results both academically, socially and emotionally in regards to effort and behaviour. It is a shame that there are a small number of students who are making some bad choices. Wherever we can we seek to support students to assist them not only with their learning but also to develop resilience and provide strategies around appropriate behaviours and making better choices. I hope that all parent/caregivers continue to support the school in our endeavour to create a safe and supportive school where all students feel a sense of belonging so that all students have opportunities to learn and be successful. School Opinion Survey (SOS): Included in this newsletter is an envelope containing an information sheet for parents stating how to go online and access the 2019 School Opinion Survey (SOS). I would encourage parents/caregivers to please complete this as it provides the school with valuable information about what we are doing well and in what areas we need to improve. The SOS is open from Monday 29 July and closes on 23 August. Teaching and non- teaching staff as well as selected students will also have an opportunity to complete the survey at school. PBL focus: We are respectful when we listen to and follow instructions from all staff members Have a great week.

HOD News – Mr Craig Wilson

Positive Behaviour for Learning: This week see a major shift in the Hi-Five system on the secondary campus. Teachers are moving with the times and shifting to digital Hi-Fives. All students will be awarded Hi-Fives via a program called Class Dojo. Students can receive positive acknowledgements for helping others, on task behaviours, participating in learning activities, persistence, being a proud learner, being respectful, being safe, teamwork and working hard. The use of the Class Dojo system allows teachers to record students’ positive behaviours online using a website or an

application. Students are represented by an Emoji that they are able to change when they have been given their class login. The class logins will be issued to classes later this week. Parent Teacher Interviews: I look forward to seeing a number of parents and students at Parent Teacher Interviews on Tuesday night. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents and students to have time with their teachers to discuss how they are going to move forward on the successes that they have already had in semester one. If you are unable to make parent teacher interviews please contact the school. Habits of Learning: I have spent this week talking to students about what activities they undertake when they are at home. I am not surprised to learn that students are spending a large amount of time on gaming devices, social media and other devices. Learning is an activity that takes time and energy, it also takes time to develop and refine skills that are learnt in class. Students will freely admit that they spend several hours attempting to complete a level because of the difficulty that they are facing. However when they are faced with the need to work on skills for learning they are unable to self-manage. Students need to set up a reward system for themselves to acknowledge that they have achieved the study that they set themselves. Often the greatest challenge that we all face in life is rewarding ourselves for completing tasks and activities.

Have a great week.

Craig Wilson

PBL News

Our PBL focus for the next two weeks will be "We are respectful when we listen to and follow instructions from all staff members." Teachers will be giving clear explicit instructions and when they see students doing what has been asked they will say “Thank you for being respectful by following my instructions.” Classes will be exploring why it is important to have someone directing and giving instructions. Please feel free to discuss how you have to follow directions/instructions in your own life with your children. High fives will be given to students who demonstrate the following of instructions. Last week, the P&C purchased a great new POPCORN MACHINE, who we have named 'Poppy'. Poppy had her first day out at the opening of the new Imbil to Brooloo Mary Valley Rail Trail and she was a HUGE success as a great fundraising opportunity for the school P&C. P&C members Jo Robey, Ave & Paul Fitzgerald had a great day and had loads of happy customers and positive feedback about the tasty popcorn. We look forward to having popcorn on offer at all of our school sports days, reward days and as a fundraiser at many local events including at the upcoming Imbil Show.

Keep an eye out in next weeks Newsletter for information and order forms for our 2019 P&C Pie Drive!
