MOMIJI COMMUNITY BAZAAR: A Community Tradition

JAPONICA: “AllThings Japanese”Last September we hosted our inauguralJaponica sale. This event offered itemsfrom our inventory of donated Japanese‘treasures’ and featured kokeshi, bamboo, lacquer, Ikebana, tableware and a selec-tion of gently or never-used soft goods in-cluding kimono, furoshiki and bags. Many of the objects were of mid-centuryvintage and a few were pre-war.

The items in this sale came from thegenerous donations of Momiji tenants andthe community. While traditionally theitems were included in our annual Com-munity Bazaar, there were many treasuresthat had never been unwrapped or usedbecause the donors or their parents andgrandparents could not bring themselvesto use them, as they were “too good”.

So, members of the Momiji Bazaarcommittee felt that a sale devoted exclu-sively to Japanese wares would allow usto properly showcase these items andwould reflect how much we appreciateand respect these donations. One of ourBazaar Co-chairs developed the Japonicaconcept, led the research and was the pri-

mary organizer for the event.Because the focus was on “all things

Japanese”, there was more space to dis-play these items. The kimono team cre-ated a beautiful display in our Atrium. There was even a seating area so peoplecould sit and enjoy the view!

As with all of our events, we hostedan amazing café. Since this was a newevent and we did not know how manypeople would show up, food quantitieswere conservative so although our Bentossold out, our volunteer café crew led by

June Asano and Linda Oikawa hadenough sandwiches, quiche, croquettesand lots of sweets to sell.

Thanks to our many shoppers, oursales exceeded our expectations so we arehosting our second annual Japonica inSeptember. Mark your calendars now forSaturday, September 8th. We hope to seeyou next year! And if you are “springcleaning” or downsizing, please considerdonating your Japanese treasures toMomiji.

Bowlers of all levels and all ages areinvited to join us on Saturday, June 2nd

for some friendly competition and to helpraise much needed funds for Momiji’sprograms and services – held both here atMomiji and in the community. Our 5-pinbowlers will be bowling at Parkway Bowl(67 Ellesmere Rd, Scarborough) whileour 10-pin bowlers will be bowling at

World Bowl (9 East Wilmot St,Richmond Hill).

Bowling is followed by a deli-cious Bento Box dinner andawards ceremony back at MomijiCentre. As always, there will besome great prizes for: hiddenscore; most sponsorship moneyraised, most sponsors and muchmore.

The Bowlathon is a majorfundraiser for Momiji and becausebowling fees and the cost of themeal provide no profit, we rely onour bowlers to collect sponsor-ships from family, friends andcommunity members. Last year, our 165 bowlers raised an incredi-ble $45,000 – which was a newrecord.

So start getting your team to-gether now and plan to join us for a greatafternoon while helping to support se-niors. This event is fun for the whole fam-ily and in the past, we have welcomedteams of three generations of bowlers! Ifyou cannot get a full team together, don’tworry, we will place you on a team. Formore information visit our website orFacebook page. We hope to see you there!

TOYOMI IKEDA: An Avid CollectorWhen most tenants move into MomijiResidence, they bring items like furniture, bedding, house wares, electronics andclothing. But how many move in with a52-shelf butterfly collection?

Toyomi Ikeda started his butterfly col-lection over 50 years ago when he wasliving in Japan. When he moved toCanada, he continued this hobby since hewas encouraged by his host family. He al-ways liked collecting things like stampsand found it very interesting that some ofthe types of butterflies that he had col-lected in Japan were also found inCanada.

Toyomi’s hobby took him to manydifferent places including South Americaand Taiwan. Anytime he had a vacation,he pursued his hobby. As for the 52shelves that he moved in with? He madeeach and every one as a permanent stor-age for his collection, which includes over1,000 kinds of butterflies. His favourite isthe yellow and black Swallowtail (Ageha-cho), which can be found in Japan andCanada but has become increasingly moredifficult to find.

An avid lepidopterist, Toyomi at-tended meetings at the Royal Ontario Mu-seum (ROM) which gave him theopportunity to talk about his passion withother butterfly collectors. So when he de-cided that his collection should be shared, donating it to the ROM was a naturalchoice.

ROBERT EIJI ODA: A lasting legacyWhen Robert “Bob” Eiji Oda was born inVancouver during the Great Depression, the doctors warned his parents that he wasunlikely to see his first birthday becausehe was born with cerebral palsy. But Bobwas a fighter and with his Mother’s deter-mination, despite his struggles, he notonly survived but thrived.

Like many Japanese Canadians, dur-ing WWII his family’s possessions wereconfiscated and the family was internedin the B.C. interior. During this time, Bobhad a life changing experience. He met acompassionate American solider whomade him a pair or crutches. Being ableto walk, he was now able to attend school.

After the war the family was forcedby the government to decide if they were

moving east or moving to Japan. Torontowas their choice. Here, Bob continued hisstudies and eventually became an accoun-tant. He retired after a long career withGoodwill Industries of Toronto.

Bob’s involvement with MomijiHealth Care Society began in 2005 whenhe participated in our Community DiningProgram’s Holiday Party at GreenviewLodge. Our Community Dining lun-cheons bring seniors together in the com-munities where they live, providing atasty and nutritious Japanese lunch, to-gether with bilingual information sessionson topics of interest to seniors, culturallyappropriate programming, and an oppor-tunity to socialize and network.

“Bob was a jazz lover. He broughtJazz music to the party. He was dressedin a jacket and tie” said Kiyoshi Dembo, our Community Programs Coordinator.“After every lunch he thanked the volun-teers for their delicious home-style meal.In spite of the spasms in his leg due to hiscerebral palsy, he was always polite andfriendly. He was a great gentleman whogave us encouragement and an apprecia-

tion of his Christian faith.” Bob enjoyed his Community Dining

program experience so much that heshared his story with our donors as part ofour Christmas Campaign a few years ago.“Japanese food; I don’t get to eat much atmy existing residence. It’s rewarding tocome every two weeks and enjoy a deli-cious Japanese home-style lunch as I usedto enjoy the meals that my mother made. The volunteers’ dedication to this pro-gram is excellent and the conversations Ihave with participants, volunteers, andstaff are important because my JapaneseLanguage is very important in my life.Momiji dining program always takes meback to the wonderful days living with mymother. Without this program I would bevery sad and lost.”

We are so appreciative that Bob left avery generous bequest in his will toMomiji Health Care Society. His donationwill help ensure that programs like Com-munity Dining continue to be held forothers. If you are interested in joining ourCommunity Dining program, please seebelow.

SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS: Learning on the Job

During the 2017-2018 school year, Sandyand I completed our social work place-ments here at Momiji. We are third andfourth year students both from RyersonUniversity. At Momiji, we worked with

Support Services to provide support toour seniors; assisted the Elderly PersonsCentre; and participated in various activ-ities and events throughout the year such as congregate dining, Seniors’ Day,Seniors’ Conference, and the MomijiBazaar. We learned a lot about Momiji’shistory and Japanese culture, and enjoyedgetting to know the tenants through theirpersonal stories. It has been a wonderfulexperience spending time with the tenantsand working closely with volunteers andstaff. We are so grateful to everyone hereat Momiji for welcoming us and makingour placements an enriching experiencethat we will always remember. Specialthanks to Jovel, our field instructor, for all her guidance! –– by Melanie Chen

Thank you Melanie and Sandy for all ofyour hard work. You will be missed butwe hope you will come back and visit!
