riah what are you doing with all those baskets? Jeniah asked. “I am about

to go on an Easter egg hunt. I have to get out there before all the little kids;

they like to take all the good eggs. I heard that there would be money in a

special egg, so I’m going to be first in line to start the search,” Uriah replied with a

smile.

Lesson 9 3

“Have you ever wondered where the concept of Easter eggs come from?” Jeniah

asked. “It has nothing to do with the Bible. In fact, the more we focus on them, the

more we take away from the real meaning of Easter. It’s all about the Life, Death and

Resurrection of Jesus,” Jeniah said. “I did some research and found that the

resurrection was a reminder that Christ died in our place. He literally faced eternal

separation from God the Father so we would be able to have everlasting life. Because

He died for us we can one day reign with Him in heaven.”

“Wow. I never thought about it like that. So that’s what John 3:16 is about… where

God gave His only son so that we can have eternal life,” Uriah said as he began to

realize the significance of the conversation.

Jesus’ resurrection was foretold to Jesus’ disciples and they were so busy trying to see

who would be in charge or when they would defeat the Roman government, they

missed what Jesus was trying to teach them that He would die and rise again to give

us an opportunity to have a new life.

1) “Did you know that since the beginning of the humanity, God always searches for

us when we make mistakes?!” Jeniah exclaimed. “When Adam and Eve messed up,

God came looking for them. Not only did He search for them He also made a sacrifice

to cover them.”

Genesis 3:9 - But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

Genesis 3:21 - The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and

clothed them.

2) Those “skins” foreshadowed the Messiah that would come to fix what the first

couple messed up, Jeniah replied.

1 Corinthians 15:20-22 - But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead… since

death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

3) I never thought about it like that, Uriah said. “Because of Jesus’ death we have

eternal life! That must be the reason John the Baptist called Jesus a Lamb!” “Exactly,”

Jeniah replied.

John 1:29 - The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the

Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that

whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

4) “Can you believe it? It is through Jesus’ sacrifice we are made right with God. As a

result of our new relationship with Him, we can help others make things right with

God as well. My camp counselor, Pastor Dilys, called it, ‘the ministry of reconciliation,’”

Jeniah said proudly.

2 Corinthians 5:19 – God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting

people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

5) “Can you believe that God planned all this? In fact, the entire Old Testament pointed

to the fact that Jesus was coming?” Jeniah said as she continued to share. “It even

talks about how He was to suffer.

1 Corinthians 15:3,4 – “… Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures… He was

buried… He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures

Isaiah 53:5,6 - But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our

iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we

are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own

way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

6) I can’t believe He endured all that for us… for me,” Uriah said shaking his head in

disbelief.

1 John 4:10 – This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his

Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Philippians 2:7-8 - He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant,

being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled

himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!

7) “One day soon we will be able tell Him thank you face to face!” Jeniah said with a

smile.

Philippians 2:9-11 – Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the

name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in

heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus

Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

“Thank you,” Uriah said as he threw his plastic eggs in a nearby trash can. “For what?”

Jeniah said with a shrug. “For reminding me of the true meaning of Easter. The reality

is Easter has nothing to do with eggs and is all about our Savior that came to this

earth to die in our place and one day soon to take us to heaven with him!”
