The Learning Environment Your students may be diverse in age, educational level and knowledge of the course topic. As adult learners, your students will come to class with expectations, often hoping to relate the content of the course to contexts in their lives or to see how the new information integrates with what they already know. Your students also bring a wealth of personal experiences to the classroom, so it is important to provide time for students to share their experiences and to interact with one another.

Tips for Facilitating Adult LearningAdult learners expect their class time to be well spent. Therefore, it is im-portant to be aware of various strategies that facilitate learning. Below are helpful tips you may already know and practice, but some may be new:

Let your students introduce themselves at the first class meeting.• Share your objectives for the course with your students and •

summarize what you will cover at the beginning of each class.Use a variety of teaching formats such as lecture, question-and- •

answer sessions, and small group discussions to help ensure various learning styles are addressed.

Move around the classroom to break down the instructor/audience • barrier.

Pace the course appropriately for older adults. For example, allow • longer response periods to questions; move from easy to more chal- lenging material to promote confidence and success; speak slower; be sensitive to possible hearing and/or vision decline in some students; and allow for adequate breaks.

Give your students positive feedback and encouragement to create a • learning climate that minimizes anxiety.

Provide your students with resource lists, study guides, outlines and • other informational materials for out-of-class reading.

Begin and end class on time.• Most importantly: Enjoy learning along with your students!•
