German Verbs with Spelling Changes
Wiederholen What is a stem-changing verb? A stem-changing verb has a spelling
change in its stem when you conjugate it. This spelling change only occurs in the du
and er/sie/es forms.
What is the stem of a verb? You find the stem by dropping –en. werden gehen machen

Types of Stem-Changes
There are different types of stem changes.
There are three types of stem-changing verbs:
• a > ä
• e > i
• e > ie

For these types of stem changing verbs, the a in the stem changes to an a with an umlaut.
Here are some common verbs with this type of stem change.
