Regent Street Christmas lights by Bola, Y5B.

THE MOG CHRONICLE ISSUE 16

The Christmas lights are up in Regent Street. Every year these beautiful lights are put up for Christmas. The 15th of November is the date that the Christmas lights were switched on in Regent Street this year. The street went traffic-free from 5pm-9pm, while the turning on of the lights took place between 5.30pm and 6.30pm. It’s been 55 years of the incredible lights. During your holidays maybe you could go and visit the Regent street Christmas lights or other Christmas light like in Oxford street and Covent Garden.

THE MOG CHRONICLE ISSUE 16

A very famous quest David Walliams visited the new West Norwood Library and Cinema and presented the new library card with his name on it. David kindly offered a copy of Mr Stink to our school. If you haven’t read it yet, please ask one of our editors to hand it over to you. The book will end up in the school library.

Everyman Cinema is a brand new cinema that has opened near me in Crystal Palace. It is a refurbished art deco building that has stood on the Crystal Palace triangle for ninety years. It first opened as the Rialto Cinema in 1928 but since then the building has had lots of different uses and was closed for a long time. They show lots of different films that you might not see in bigger cinemas and sometimes they have Q and A’s (Question and Answer sessions) where people from the film business talk about their work. If you ever want to go yourself, the address is 25 Church Road, London. Phone number 0872 436 9060.

Environment Sir David Attenborough, by Jerry Y6.

THE MOG CHRONICLE ISSUE 16

Sir David Frederick Attenborough is one of the most well-known British natural historians, having also worked many times with the BBC to create natural history documentaries such as one of his latest: Dynasties. He was born in Middlesex in 1926 on the 8th of May and is now 92. David Attenborough has been educated at Wyggeston Grammar School and the University of Cambridge. He has narrated Blue Planet II and has made the very popular Life collection and became the controller of BBC 2 in March 1965 and later on that year filmed elephants in Tanzania. He has also had many plants and animals named after him such as: alpine hawkweed (Hieracum Attenboroughianum) or

(Platisaurus Attenboroughi). He has won many awards such as the BAFTA or the Kew International Medal to name a few.

Dynasties, his latest documentary is focused around the dynasties of many endangered animals such as chimpanzees, penguins, lions and the painted wolf all of which are in need of protection and should not be hunted. The next episode in the series will be about a tigress who is trying to protect her family (the documentaries are all available on BBC Iplayer). Sir David Attenborough’s documentary Living Planet’s latest

episode is all about the destruction that the humans are bringing to this planet and that it should be stopped. Recently Sir David Attenborough has told the United Nations Summit that: ‘Continuation of civilisation is in your hands’. He has also stated that George W. Bush’s time was an ‘environmental villain’When David Attenborough began his career, in 1950, Earth's human population was measured at just 2.5 billion people ... in 2012 he said: We cannot continue to deny the problem. People have pushed aside the question of population sustainability and not considered it because it is too awkward, embarrassing and difficult. But we have to talk about it.

The Great North Wood by Sufiyan Y4B.

THE MOG CHRONICLE ISSUE 16

The Great North Wood was a forest which covered almost the whole of South London. Many of the trees you see on the streets around us are from the Great North Wood. Upper Norwood, West Norwood and South Norwood got their names from the Great North Wood because it spread across these three places the most. Although people chopped the forest down 200 years ago, the public can still visit it – but more about that later.

The Great North Wood stretched all the way from Camberwell to North Croydon. It got its name from being to the north of Croydon. The Great North Wood contained lots of beasts and millions of trees. There was also a river running through it called the Effra. These days the River has been covered up, but it still runs underground, passing under West Norwood Cemetery before it eventually meets the Thames. There is a local legend that people still believe in Lambeth about the River Effra. People still say that many years ago a gravestone fell through the ground in the Cemetery and pushed a dead body into the River Effra. The next day someone spotted it floating down the Thames!

But anyway, back to the story… the Great North Wood existed for many years until one day there was an announcement they were going to chop it down. The forest was chopped down and turned into what it is now: South London. Do you remember I said earlier that the public can still visit the forest? Well, the last remaining part of the Great North Wood is in fact Dulwich Woods / Sydenham Woods (where you can make amazing dens too!).

Development of technology by Jasper Y6.

6

THE MOG CHRONICLE ISSUE 16

Mankind has constantly been searching for ways to make their lives easier and for technology to become more efficient. These inventions range all the way from coffee machines to nuclear submarines. The most fearsome and awe inspiring of these are machines for technological warfare. An example is drones acting as assassins, making nobody safe in the world anymore.

Nowadays everything is run by A.I. from the computers in video games to missiles targeted to strike anywhere in the world. Some people believe that robots will at some point overthrow humans, although this is very unlikely; Humans program robots so they will never be allowed to attack us. Furthermore, some people are trying to invent robots that learn by themselves without humans programming this information into them. The army is also trying to create a similar type of robot, but one that learns military things by itself, such as change in movements of enemy positions. This will enable the holder of this technology to claim whatever land they wanted; Due to the robots nobody could stop them. Some countries cannot do this as they are too poor and some can’t because they have laws preventing them but, countries such as Russia or US of America are putting all their work inside development of machines like this. This is not unlike the cold war: A hostile time between Russia and America, both trying as hard as they possibly could to develop better weapons than one another although none of these weapons have actually been used yet, as this could lead to global annihilation. With a bit of luck, these weapons will never be used as Russia and America simply have too many of them. Hopefully, both sides at some point see that there is no point in this but for this millions of people are crossing their fingers. To have good technology is one thing, to build it into better weapons is another.
