Principal’s Foreword

Our values are at the core of who we are. They influence our attitudes and perspectives, our actions and conversation, our decisions... and ultimately our lives.

School rules tell you what you can do or cannot do. Values guide you to do what you should do or should not do. Knowingly or unknowingly, the decisions we make every moment of our lives are driven by our values. It is therefore important for us to be anchored on a set of values, just like our school values of Respect, Compassion, Integrity and Perseverance.

How have you lived each day that is given to you? Have you made the best of each day? How do you behave when there is no one looking?

Each new day is a present to us; and for us, how do we make that day a present for others, our loved ones, family, teachers and friends? How do we make that day a present for ourselves?

Do not take your school days for granted. The Yumin community – all our staff, our parents, our SAC members, community partners and international counter-parts have been providing their unceasing support all these years to nurture that champion in you; Champions with the Head, Heart and Hand. Many of you would not have been able to discover your talent or unleash your potential without this love and dedication.

As you leaf through the Yearbook and look back at 2012 with fond memories, remember to:

Hold fast to your values…Be true to yourselves…Live life to the fullest…my dear Yumin Champions.

Blessings to you,

Miss Oh

It had been an exciting year having Yumin Primary School with Tampines East Zone 1 RC

organising activities to benefit the community and the environment.

6 bins aesthetically painted by Yumin pupils for the “National Litter Free Programme” launched

on National Day were placed around the Tampines East Zone 1 precinct. This creates a change

in the traditional image of rubbish bins in our garden city and helps to promote anti-littering.

In the effort of saving our Earth, Yumin pupils participated in the “Recycling Day” project held

in July and August with Tze Ji Foundation. Together with other volunteers, the students helped

to collect recycled items from the residents and gave them information on the importance of

recycling and saving Mother Earth. This project hopes to embrace recycling as part of our daily

practice.

On 5th October, 203 students under the Financial Assistance Scheme celebrated Children’s

Day in Popular bookstore to pick out useful gifts with a given budget of $15. This event, “Make

my Day”, gave the students valuable lesson on budgeting and a real-life experience in managing

their resources and making timely decisions. The students appreciated the sponsor’s effort and

enjoyed their Children’s Day tremendously.

We look forward to having more meaningful events and activities in the upcoming year, partnering

with other stakeholders within the community to create a more vibrant and inclusive society.

Chinese New Year

Fun-filled activities such as bean painting, kite making, poetry recitation and calligraphy aimed at increasing the interest of the Chinese and Malay Language amongst our pupils were organised during the Mother Tongue Language Fortnight.

This year Yumin Primary School’s Sports Carnival was very different. It was back to nature at Sengkang Riverside Park.

The event not only instilled the love for nature in the pupils but also provided a platform for our community to appreciate the outdoor learning experience.

All had fun and in the process, friendship was strengthened and family bonding enhanced. It was clearly a memorable day for all.

The main focus of this year’s Racial Harmony Week was to instil a sense of belonging to the society through games, food and experiences of different cultures. Pupils learnt the story of our forefathers through a skit put up by our Speech & Drama Club members. Pupils also played traditional games and drums, as well as sampled traditional snacks throughout the week.

Racial Harmony Week

“Loving Singapore, Our Home” was the theme for NDP 2012. Our pupils were engaged in activities that reflected the theme. Our P1 and P2 pupils were given the opportunity to pen down their well-wishes for Singapore on ‘Bouquets of Love’ which were displayed at the Grandcourt. Through the ‘Food Galore’ activity, P3 and P4 pupils became more aware of the different delicacies from the different ethnic groups in Singapore. The activity “On

a Street in Singapore” brought the P5 and P6 pupils through the life in the public housing estates where Singaporeans of different races live, work and play. The celebration culminated in a concert in the school hall with the singing of the National Day songs and a Modern Dance performance, Harmonious Celebration, which tied in perfectly with the NDP celebration.

Our commitment is in nurturing the whole child. Programme for Active Learning (PAL) for our Primary 1 and Primary 2 pupils provides pupils with broad exposure and experiences through fun and varied activities. Pupils participated in the various Sports and Games, Outdoor

Education, Performing Arts (Music and Dance) and Visual Arts modules throughout the year. These modules provide a platform for experiential learning and the acquisition of skills such as interaction with peers and confidence.

P5 & P6 Programme Highlights

This year, 30 Primary 5 pupils visited Shanghai, Wuxi and Suzhou during the June vacation. For many of us, it was our first visit to China. In order to have quality interaction with our friends from China, some of our pupils attended lessons on Chinese classic literature.

We visited many places of interest such as the Yixin campsite and the silk factory. We also learnt about the Chinese tea culture during the trip.

Throughout the trip, our Yumin Champions displayed maturity by looking out for and helping one another. This experience not only broadened our global outlook, but also deepened our commitment as Singaporeans. We learn to appreciate the diversity among us and enjoy the multi-racial harmony that is uniquely Singapore.

As a member of the Art Club, I have tried my hands at Wood Painting, Paper Mache, Styrofoam Sculpture and 3D Sculpture. I enjoy the interaction with the other members during our weekly sessions, and we give one another feedback on improving our artworks. Moreover, I have the opportunities to appreciate artworks done by pupils of other schools during the Art learning journeys. I look forward to attending Art Club sessions every Friday. I am proud to be part of the Art Club!

I enjoy all Art Club sessions because I could create artworks using different types of materials. Working on an artwork cultivates my patience and perseverance. Whenever I am stressed, working on an art piece would help me de-stress and feel more relaxed.

BrowniesWe learnt a lot of meaningful activities in Brownies that help us in our personal and social development. There are challenges to work on in every module such as knowing the importance of good health and hygiene, cultivating an interest in the Arts, knowing how to respond in an emergency and many more.

This year, we took part in several competitions during the East Division Brownie Revel and clinched the 2nd prize for flower arrangement, toy making and sandwich sling. We also participated in the Girl Guides East Division Day and came in 2nd in Healthy Snack Making and 3rd in the Dance competition. Yumin Brownies also received the Puan Noor Aishah Gold Award, a prestigious award, to recognise the unit’s effort the previous year. We were very honoured to receive the award. Well done, Yumin Brownies!

I enjoy the lessons conducted in Chinese Club very much because they are very interesting. For example, we were taught to perform a play based on the story of the moon fairy. I enjoyed that as some parts were very funny. In Chinese Club, I learned that patience and perseverance are key to putting up a good play.

I have joined Choir for two years and I enjoyed it very much. We would do lip drills to warm up our voices before singing. Our instructor will ensure that we do them properly so that we can sing beautifully. We would sing different types of songs - some funny, others happy and cheerful.

In the months leading to the SYF competition, our instructor was stricter with us. We would sing the songs for the competition over and over again until the instructor felt that we had put in 101% effort.

Joining the Choir has been a very fruitful experience and it has also given me many opportunities to perform in public, hence building my confidence. If you are looking for a meaningful and enjoyable CCA, join the Choir!

Let’s move and groove to the music! Do you know what CCA I’m talking about? Yes. You’re right! It is the Creative Movement and Dance. I love my CCA as I get to learn many different types of dance, even ballet! You should join me and my friends to explore the world of dance.

Creative Movement & Dance is a very joyful CCA. We worked and trained really hard for the SYF competition this year. We practised for long hours but our hard work paid off. We received the Gold Award!

Environmental ClubAfter joining the Environmental Club, I am now more aware of environmental issues. The highlight this year was our participation in the Yumin Litter-Free Project in collaboration with Tampines East Zone 1 RC.

The objective of this project was to showcase our artistic talent and give us the opportunity to demonstrate our care and concern for the environment. The project required us to paint six dustbins with messages promoting a litter-free environment and crime prevention. We hope our work will be a reminder to all of us to keep our environment clean and green.

The experience was truly enriching. It was also significant as we were invited to give a speech during the Community Launch attended by the Members of Parliament of Tampines GRC and led by the Minister for Education, Mr Heng Swee Keat, on 9th August 2012 at the vicinity of Blk 201E, Tampines Street 23. What an honour!

GuzhengSince we were in lower primary, we were already interested in traditional Chinese musical instruments, so we decided to choose Guzheng as our CCA. We learn values like teamwork, respect and perseverance in Guzheng. While learning the skills and techniques, we also enjoy the success of memorizing the notes of the songs and performing on stage. We also love the companionship of our fellow Guzheng friends, including the teachers. Although we were nervous on stage at times, we did our very best and were able to achieve the Silver awards for the SYF competitions in 2010 and 2012. We feel that all the hard work had paid off. We love Guzheng!

Look at how time flies. Now, the InfoComm Club is into its fourth year. This year, the combination of the senior and junior groups creates a more inclusive and supportive environment for our members. The InfoComm Club members have been trained to use the Adobe Fireworks and Adobe Flash. It was fun learning how to make animation using Adobe Flash.

At the end of each year, we participate in the annual Schools Digital Media Awards. This year, we are looking forward to submitting one entry by the senior team.

I love my CCA teachers. They are helpful and approachable. I have also made many friends in the club.

Learn-a-Sport provides me with the opportunity to be exposed to different types of sports, some of which are not offered as CCAs in our school. I enjoy being actively engaged in outdoor activities such as Ultimate Frisbee, Hockey and Netball.

Recently, my friends and I have completed a six-week soccer clinic. It was one of the best times of my life. We had a great coach to guide us. He shared many tips and strategies. I felt like Ronaldo with my knee high socks and soccer boots! I am looking forward to learning more in Learn-a-Sport!

I enjoyed doing the CIP project for the Tampines Regional Library. We made origami of frogs, dragons and hearts and put them up on the walls of the Regional Library. We felt a sense of pride and satisfaction when we saw how colourful and attractive the walls had become.

Rushda Maslan 4A

Being a school librarian has helped me to become a better learner. In our learning journey to the Tampines Regional Library, we were given a tour of the library and a talk on ‘A Life of a Librarian’. It is not an easy job! We also learnt some good research skills. I really enjoyed the visit. It is really a privilege to be a school librarian.

Netball is a sport that trains and challenges you physically and mentally. In the five enjoyable years I have been in Netball, I have gained a lot of confidence and learnt to be a team player.

Being the captain, I hold a lot of responsibilities. I motivate and encourage my team mates when they are down and I am always there for my team.

I have been to numerous carnivals, friendly matches and competitions which I have benefitted from. My involvement in my CCA has equipped me with the skills to conquer and overcome every obstacle that I face.

Jasmine Cheah 6B

Netball is all about teamwork. Without teamwork, we will not be able to win the game. Netball is a game for those who love challenges. Training is very tough but I enjoy it. I took part in the East Zone tournament for the first time this year. Although the team did not win all the games, we built friendship along the way.

Red CrossBeing in Red Cross Society, I get to go on various learning journeys and events. I have gone on an excursion to the fire station and attended the Red Cross 60th anniversary celebration. Both trips were meaningful! I learnt how the fire station operates and the importance of fire safety. Red Cross also taught us first aid skills and how to react under different situations. We were also rewarded with badges for accomplishing certain tasks.

Yeo Wei Sheng 5A

I really enjoy being in the Red Cross Society. There are so many things that I have learnt during my two years as a member. Red Cross is a very useful and fun-filled CCA. When somebody is injured, I can utilise the skills that I have learnt in Red Cross to help people. One of the first aid skills that I learnt is the different types of bandaging. I thought learning it would be boring. However, it turned out to be engaging as we get to use real bandages on our partners. We also get to play some games that involve teamwork. I am very happy that I am in Red Cross.

Through Scouting, I have learnt many life skills. For instance, I have learnt how to tie knots, set-up tents and cook outdoors with materials like dead leaves, sticks, twigs and matches. I have also developed leadership skills along the way.

Scouting has also taught me to overcome challenges. ‘A Scout has courage in all difficulties’ is one of the Scout laws that is imprinted in my heart and thus enabled me to overcome my fear of heights in one of the rock climbing sessions. I failed the first time but subsequently I made it to the top! I was overwhelmed by a sense of satisfaction. The skills I learnt as a Scout help me to overcome a lot of difficulties in my school work. I know how to persevere. If given a second chance to choose a CCA, I will still choose Scouting because it moulds me to be a better person.

SoftballSoftball is a tough but rewarding CCA. The hard work that we put in during the rigorous training not only develops us physically but also mentally. It also enhances my endurance and stamina. I am encouraged to go further and seek additional trainings outside of school as a result.

Our perseverance and fighting spirit were tested many times during games. It was heart-breaking to see big boys cry at the knock-out stage. But in the name of sportsmanship, we gave due respect to our opponents and the umpires.

Above all, we could still hold our heads up high for we know that we have put in our best. Still,I believe the best is yet to come.

Speech & Drama ClubFrom public speaking and journalism to literature appreciation and drama, pupils are able discover their strengths in the different forms of literary arts in the Speech & Drama Club.

We have written our own scripts for plays and jingles and performed them in front of our peers.I was delighted to perform on stage during the Racial Harmony Week. I portrayed a European businessman. It was heartening to get compliments from my teachers and friends. I can’t wait to perform on stage again!

Muhammad Asrun 4E

Other than acting in the skit for Racial Harmony Week, I was selected to be the emcee for the Teachers’ Day Concert. I learnt how to project my voice, improve on my enunciation, articulation and diction. I feel that I have become more confident through the opportunities I have been given through the Speech & Drama Club.

I was mesmerised by the music when the String Ensemble members played during one of the school’s assembly programmes. The music produced by the instruments was beautiful. The performance inspired me to join the CCA. I have been in this CCA for two years and I have learnt how to play the double bass and cello. It was a great experience taking part in the SYF competition this year.

Jeanie Kan 5A

I joined the String Ensemble last year when I was in Primary One. I have made many good friends in this CCA. I have learnt that I need perseverance to play an instrument well and this has helped me to pass the Grade 3 ABRSM violin exam. This year, we spent a lot of time preparing for the SYF competition. I was nervous during the performance but I tried to remain calm and put in my best effort. My CCA group members and I performed well and we won the Bronze award.

VolleyballThis year, Yumin Volleyball Team achieved outstanding achievements for both the Senior and Junior Boys categories.

For the East Zone Inter-Primary Schools Volleyball Championship held in February 2012, the Senior Team came in runners-up and the Junior Team emerged the East Zone Champion. We had indeed pushed ourselves by training hard to win the championship.

In the National Primary Schools Volleyball Championship held in May, the Junior Team qualified for the quarter-final and attained 6th position eventually. The Senior Team qualified for the first round but unfortunately did not manage to proceed to the next round.

We had definitely given our best in the competitions.

My years as a member of Yumin School Advisory Committee (SAC) have enabled me to see how the school plans and manages its programmes to benefit each and every one of its Champions. These programmes, be it in the areas of academic, arts or sports, bring out the best in every pupil. What is heartening is Yumin’s efforts in ensuring that no child is left behind, especially pupils from financially disadvantaged family background. When the government assistance schemes cannot help these pupils, the SAC funding scheme will be utilized where possible. I commend Yumin’s efforts at doing their best to assist all children regardless of their race, nationality or family background.

Yumin has a team of committed and dedicated teachers. What strikes me most is how the teachers effectively communicate with parents through various avenues such as the pupil’s handbook, emails, phone calls and Meet-the-Parents sessions.

I can truly say that my journey with the SAC has been fruitful. I am very encouraged to see ALL TEACHERS IN YUMIN really caring for OUR CHILDREN.

It was 2008. My 11-year-old daughter, Rachel and 7-year-old son, Ronald were both attending another neighbourhood school. When I discovered that my daughter was mixing with the wrong company in that school and was not doing well in school, I decided to look for another school for my children so that they would have a better learning environment.

After some ‘research’ and recommendations from other parents, I chose Yumin Primary School and was glad that the school took them in. I decided to join the PAPA (PArents as PArtners) group so that I could be more involved in my children’s education and at the same time get to know the school and teachers better. I have indeed made the right choice to transfer my children to Yumin Primary School. Yumin is a good school with dedicated teachers, strong values and culture and an excellent learning environment.

As a PAPA member, I have had lots of opportunity to work with the staff in organising school events.

I will always remember the day when...

• PAPA sold pizzas, ice pops, chicken wings and cup corn during a Fun Raising Event. We had great fun for a good cause.

• PAPA turned judges to pick the “Best Learner-Centred Classroom”. I got to see the great classroom environment that my children were in.

• PAPA was involved annually in Teachers’ Day concerts. We choreographed a dance item for the pupils and taught the pupils how to sing. We even performed a dance for the teachers! We were not dancers but we tried and performed well. It was great fun.

There were just so many nice and meaningful events that I was involved in that I will always remember and cherish.

Now, Rachel is in Secondary Three in Pasir Ris School, Ronald is in Primary 5 and my youngest son, Russell, is in Primary 2. I am still actively involved in PAPA and hope to work with more parents to continue to make Yumin an excellent school for our children.

Thank you Yumin!

““Six fruitful years have passed and soon I will be

graduating from Yumin Primary School. Yumin has given

me many opportunities to develop my leadership skills

and my character. As a head prefect and also the school’s

netball captain, I had to assume many responsibilities.

Time management was the hardest at first as I had to cope with my sports, studies and also

my duties as a head prefect. After getting elected as a prefect in Primary 4, my confidence was

boosted and now I am no longer the shy girl I used to be. Through external courses, planning

and carrying out numerous events and leading a group of people, my leadership skills improved

tremendously. Out of all the events that was carried out, I enjoyed the Meet-the-Parents’

session the most as we had to carry out Project Teamwork, an activity in which we had to sell

drinks and snacks to the parents. Through the activity, I learnt how to lead a group and also to

speak up and persuade people to buy the refreshments sold.

As a netball captain, I had to gel the team together and encourage my teammates to press on.

Through this sport, I developed mental and physical strength.

I am really very grateful and fortunate to have such dedicated teachers to guide me through

my primary school years as such teachers are hard to come by. The teachers have put in care

and effort in everything that they do and they ensured that we were coping well. My friends

too supported me through thick and thin and never fail to brighten up my day. There had been

ups and downs in my friendship and through these, I have learnt to choose my friends wisely. In

fact, words cannot describe the gratitude I have for the teachers and friends in Yumin who are

always there for me. Yumin will always be an integral part of my life and the memories there

will be unforgettable.
