Educational Aims This module is based on students’ knowledge of basic analysis and planning processes in engineering and environment. Students develop an understanding of ecological and social functions of open spaces in urban and rural areas, of open space categories, planning instruments, levels and methods. They know relevant examples for the spatial structure, design and management of landscape and open space and can assess their viability. Students are expected to prove an adequate level of self-guided research and reflection regarding content and methodology.
Learning Outcome Students can present topics, methods, instruments and strategies in an exemplary area of open space planning in the context of urban and rural development. Issues of open space planning and design are understood in the context of the professional field of environmental engineering, urban planning and design as well as landscape architecture. Students are able to identify aims, conflicts, synergies and solutions and to present their findings in seminar discussions, also in relation to their individual educational background.

Educational Aims Students will see and learn insights in various innovative techniques of environmental engineering. This lecture gives a brief overview over the technical use of solar energy. Based on the understanding why renewable energies are important some basic economic figures are explained. Afterwards, the focus is on the solar thermal and photovoltaic use of solar power. Underlying physical principles are explained and the most important components of state-of-the-art technical systems for solar power conversion are discussed.
Learning Outcome Students will be able to describe latest environmental technologies in specialist areas, and discuss these innovations in detail. Students will be able to present the structure and function of solar energy conversion systems. They have a basic knowledge of the economic aspects of renewable energy and e-mobility.

Educational Aims The aim of the module is to develop an understanding of the key meteorological, hydrological and hydraulic processes, their impact on the natural and man-made environment and in particular the development and consequences of extreme situations. Through the modelling of some processes and the exploration of the model and its results the understanding of the dynamics and mechanisms will be supported. Students will acquire a range of techniques in particular related to the analysis and processing of data that can be applied elsewhere.
Learning Outcome Students will be familiar with the water cycle of different scales, will be able to estimate the water balance of a particular area and will know about the consequences of climate change on the water cycle. Students will have an overview of hydro-metrical techniques and will have practiced some of the most common gauging methods. They will be familiar with the checking and processing of hydrometrical data. Students will have learnt the basics of hydrological and hydraulic modeling and will have built their first hydraulic model enabling them to apply the knowledge using different software and for different purposes. Students will have an understanding of the development of floods, flood forecasting and flood protection. They will know how to produce a flood map using GIS. Learning Outcome Being able to write a scientific essay on a subject adjacent to the topics presented in the lecture.
Content The lectures in the first part of the term provide an overview on the basic elements of the business life in Germany, e.g., cover topics like the social market economy and the system of co-determination in Germany. In the following lectures, the structure of the German economy ranging from the start-up scene to DAX-30 companies will be highlighted. The last part of the2 lecture series is devoted to different current themes, for example ownership succession in family-owned businesses.
